To wonder what the current guidelines/conventions around Covid are?

I have no idea where we are with Covid, it's not easy to track down a test and they're £2 each! Are people testing if they're unwell - what are workplace policies like? Stay at home until negative? Are people really testing everytime you feel unwell?

We do test if we have symptoms, so we can stay home but I know lots of people don't bother now.

NAndJIsLockingDown · 17/08/2024 19:38

It's very easy - WFH, go out at quiet times, mask up if there's a risk of coming within 2m of a stranger.

And not everyone can work from home. I can't imagine why anyone would routinely mask up these days if they were about to be within 2m of a stranger.

BeachParty · 17/08/2024 21:00

There aren't any restrictions.
I'm not testing, or masking.

vodkaredbullgirl · 17/08/2024 21:02

I had COVID last Xmas, work in care and was told to mask up.

We do test, but our youngest has been in ICU 5 times with Covid and takes longer to recover each time.

She also goes to a specialist school with other very vulnerable children so everyone takes precautions (and have done since before covid) and keeps distances with coughs and colds etc

Goodness me your poor Dd yet posters are dismissive of covid and people are just being "silly"

NannyandJohn has name changed because they were banned under their last username(s) 🙄

They accused me of living in a hovel as I have no spare room for an office. Apparently by working from home rather than commuting I could save enough to move out of my hovel to somewhere with enough room for and office.

As I only have a 15 minute each way commute I haven't saved enough yet!

Mum2jenny · 17/08/2024 21:15

Nobody cares. I work in healthcare and nobody tests or is interested in testing. The hospital doesn’t care either.
I know it’s rife, but……

usernother · 17/08/2024 21:19

I wouldn't test. Threw all my masks and testing stuff out ages ago.

My child also goes to a special school some of the pupils are very vulnerable ie on oxygen ,and tube fed etc but my son is expected to be if he's well enough we are told not to test for covid 🤷‍♀️I'm lucky despite my sons disabilities he's in robust health but what can you do when you are told to send them in any way

BeaRF75 · 17/08/2024 20:13

There are no rules. Nobody in their right mind would waste time and money on a test (except people who seem to enjoy the "drama"). Covid is a mild, endemic, airborne virus.... like hundreds of others. Just ignore it.

So why are hospitals testing everyone who is admitted or who has symptoms if they attend A&E if it's such a mild disease that no one needs to worry about?
Why has my local hospital currently admitted 30 people suffering from COVID difficulties if it's so mild, the highest number in a long time according to the nurse I spoke to when i was in hospital?
Why is my previously extremely fit and healthy( ultra marathons etc) family member suffering from heart problems brought on by Long Covid if it's so mild?
You need to educate yourself. It's mild for many people but very serious for others, and it's not just a respiratory disease, it can affect other organs. There's no telling who will get Long Covid, no correlation between that and how healthy you are.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 17/08/2024 22:02

I would test and stay home
If I had it, I wouldn't spread it around.

DinnaeFashYersel · 17/08/2024 22:05

I don't think some will ever move past their fear and for a few it's become a fetish.

Very sad.

Chocolateorange22 · 17/08/2024 22:09

We test in our husband as DH is vulnerable. Therefore if I test positive before him then he can contact his hospital consultant for advice. Likewise if he tests positive first then I can try and isolate with the kids so I don't get unwell and not be able to act as his 'main carer'. Nobody else does that I know of. Doesn't bother me, life goes on and we all have to cope with it the best we can. Although we both WFH we do both go out, use public transport, visit hospitals etc so probably will catch it again. We are both vaccinated (I get it when offered in the autumn and not eligible for the spring ones) and what will he will be. When DH had it in 2022 he got anti virals at hospital and that was that. Imagine it would be similar again next time.

I’ve had a lot of hospital appointments recently, there’s no mention of Covid. Nobody’s testing in schools anymore. We have bugs a lot worse than Covid all year round in schools.

I've found covid tests are readily available in all pharmacies, or from Amazon for under £1 each. Most people I know still test if they have symptoms which could be Covid - I test because I don't want to risk passing it on to a vulnerable person.

My husband is clinically vulnerable and had managed to avoid catching Covid throughout the pandemic, but caught it a few weeks ago and was the most unwell he has ever been in the 50 years I've known him. He was still testing positive for ten days and if he hadn't taken regular tests, once he was able to get out of bed, he could have gone out and passed it on to other similarly vulnerable people . I think it's incredibly selfish not to take a test if you think you've got covid, in the same way as it would be to mix with anyone if you had a contagious illness.

Growlybear83 · 17/08/2024 22:31

I forgot to mention that I had surgery just under five weeks ago, and I had to take a covid test when I arrived at the hospital for my operation.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 17/08/2024 22:35

Where I work if you do test and do test positive if not feeling to ill to work can still come in. If rough then stay off.

Don't get sick pay either only SSP.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 17/08/2024 22:02

Some places of work expect you in though, or wouldn't pay you for being off.

sarahzbaker · 18/08/2024 02:06

I only tested when a friend said she tested positive
Brain fog was the was the worst. Couldn't really think properly. Weird

Stayed indoors though

Mumoftwo57 · 18/08/2024 02:33

Basically meant to treat it like the common cold now. Daily business as normal unless unwell. I personally test when I have symptoms but I have grandparents who are vulnerable, one with cancer & my mother has a chronic lung condition so mainly for their benefit x

I agree with this and for some people I think it tips over beyond the health fetish and into this weird fetishisation of the lifestyle which seems to be endemic.

See also the militant introvertism which has become standard since the pandemic. People celebrating the narrowing of their social circles and patting themselves on the back for not having friends and living a Puritanical lifestyle.

Remmy123 · 18/08/2024 08:31

Those still social distancing masks etc have a severe health anxiety and need to sort that out. You only get one life go enjoy it!

Misthios · 18/08/2024 08:33

Like any other illness.

If you're too ill to work then you call in sick. No requirement to test or the rest of it, no requirement to inform anyone you;ve been in contact with etc etc,

Arrivapercy · 18/08/2024 08:34

I would only test us if we were going somewhere with a lot of vulnerable people- visiting a care home, or going as an inpatient to a care home.

There are no requirements to test or social distance any more. Rates of it can be high (just as they can be of flu) but its not resulting in high levels of excess deaths now.
