I have no idea where we are with Covid, it's not easy to track down a test and they're £2 each! Are people testing if they're unwell - what are workplace policies like? Stay at home until negative? Are people really testing everytime you feel unwell?

I’d test if I had symptoms of Covid tbh. I had long Covid for 9 months and was then redeployed at work for 4 or 5 months back in 20/21. It’s taken about 2 years to get over it completely and I’m still on 2 cardiac meds because of it. I certainly wouldn’t want to give it to any of my patients or family tbh.

Rosaluxemberg · 17/08/2024 19:53

Are you a medic ? @RaspberryRipple2

spikeandbuffy24 · 17/08/2024 19:56

@piccolorhinoceros no, they prefer we work from home whether it's Covid or a cold as it makes sense. They don't want to expose 4 staff to something and have them off for weeks/months rather than the other person with a cold just WFH for as long as they need

It's really not a big deal, just drop a message saying "hey got a cough so I'm WFH today"
Most people WFH some days of the week so just swap it about

Not everyone has the option of staying home if they're ill. Drives me batshit when people keep saying that.
bedridden then yes, can't go to work anyway. If you can then go in, COVID or not

Yes it's so infuriating, people telling others to stay home ,when it's not them that are losing money.

My mum is vulnerable (not ECV, just catches things easily) - I tested at Christmas as I was fairly sure we'd have to cancel visiting, and we did all have it (for the second time). Otherwise I wouldn't bother.

To be honest, still seeing people whacking out a mask every time they're in public has continued to affect my mum's mental health which in turn has badly affected my dad and their marriage. Odds are they'd be "healthier" if she'd caught and got over it.

Itsforthebest · 17/08/2024 20:04

Basically, the guidelines are to stay at home until day 5 then mask for 5 days.

I had covid a few months ago. It was the worst illness I've ever had. I was unable to get out of bed for a week and still felt dreadful on day 8 and 9. I went into work on day 10 even though I had a faint positive line. I believe scientists think you're unlikely to pass it on after day 9 and maybe they're right because I didn't.

I knew I had covid, I'd picked it up from my DC who had been ill and was asked to test by school before she went on a trip. I did my first test on day 5 just out of curiosity.

I lost a week's pay. I'll be getting the covid vax in October. I know it probably won't stop me from getting covid but I hope it lessens the symptoms.

Berlinlover · 17/08/2024 20:07

Give me strength, will this nonsense ever end? And before anyone harps on about the vulnerable, I have stage 3c cancer.

HelloMiss · 17/08/2024 20:07

Life goes on

The country cannot stop like it did last time

Doubt we will ever see those extremes ever again. I didn't bother with masks before so o won't in the future either

@NAndJIsLockingDown

According to official data for week ending
2 August

13.6% of deaths involved flu or pnuemonia

2.2 % involved Covid

FIL died of pneumonia in 2022; the pneumonia was a result of hospital acquired covid.

BeaRF75 · 17/08/2024 20:13

There are no rules. Nobody in their right mind would waste time and money on a test (except people who seem to enjoy the "drama"). Covid is a mild, endemic, airborne virus.... like hundreds of others. Just ignore it.

BeaRF75 · 17/08/2024 20:15

NAndJIsLockingDown · 17/08/2024 19:19

Unfortunately everyone's acting as though it no longer exists, despite cases being sky high.

We're still taking the usual precautions - masks and SD.

You do know that masks are useless? This is 2024, not 2020 - you can have your life back.

bakewellbride · 17/08/2024 20:16

I do nothing, absolutely nothing.

If others want to faff around with masks etc they are free to knock themselves out.

FFP3s most certainly aren't.

Beaverbridge · 17/08/2024 20:19

My daughter works in a stroke ward. No tests or mask wearing required. Also expected to turn up for work.

TinaYouFatLard · 17/08/2024 20:21

John! Blink twice if you need rescuing!

ARichtGoodDram · 17/08/2024 20:21

We do test, but our youngest has been in ICU 5 times with Covid and takes longer to recover each time.

She also goes to a specialist school with other very vulnerable children so everyone takes precautions (and have done since before covid) and keeps distances with coughs and colds etc

Are there any rules atm?

OrangeSlices998 · 17/08/2024 20:43

Guidance on the NHS is stay home if you feel unwell.

I tested recently as my mum tested, because my brother who she’s carer for is disabled and prone to chest infections and needed to be sure she didn’t expose him if she could avoid it. She was positive and gave it to me, we were both horrendously ill, I only got out of bed for a week out of necessity to care for the kids. I’ve had Covid before and never been so ill. If I hadn’t tested I think I’d have guessed (lost my sense of taste and smell), but probably would have thought maybe flu?

Interestingly friends I’ve seen since have all said they wouldn’t have tested and weren’t worried about getting it.

spikeandbuffy24 · 17/08/2024 19:37

@HelloMiss they do their best
We have me and 3 other staff that can't go in if someone with Covid is in work so they try and balance it
I mean they wouldn't call the police but everyone is aware if they suspect they have Covid or they have a positive test then WFH (it's not a big deal, most of us WFH some of the week anyway)

We have a colleague who has a 5yo with cancer, a colleague who is newly back in work after a lung transplant, me, and another colleague. None of us want to expose them to covid
My manager will supply a test for anyone who would like one

Your employers sound reasonable and sensible and extremely inclusive and caring.

I think yes - most of us don't test and just carry on. But as you've shown that ain't always best for everyone.

PickAChew · 17/08/2024 20:47

Home bargains have stacks of tests for £5 a box.

butterfly0404 · 17/08/2024 20:51

My work involves visiting hospitals and care homes, no testing or masks required , if any patient or resident has covid I wouldn't be told and I'm not concerned despite being severely asthmatic and prone to chest infections. Can't avoid every virus out there, I'd never leave the house.

I've had covid 5 times now, I've had worse colds.

DarkForces · 17/08/2024 20:52

NAndJIsLockingDown · 17/08/2024 19:22

No, but we should do all we can to protect those who are.

Especially as mPox is now here.

Absolutely. I've stopped shagging men with lesions. Tough but totally worth it
