To ask supermarkets to offer smaller burgers?

bravefox · 16/08/2024 20:22

Just that really. Whenever we do a bbq the only (non-frozen) burgers available in the supermarkets seem to be at least 1/4 pounder size.

I know lots of people enjoy big burgers but esp for kids that's a lot of meat. We did BBQ today and both kids asked for their burgers to be cut in two!

Why do no supermarkets sell McDonalds hamburger sized patties?

YANBU - offer some smaller sizes too
YABU - What's the fuss?

Buy the frozen ones and defrost them first.

QueenOfWeeds · 16/08/2024 20:23

Could you buy beef meatballs and squash them flat/squash a few together?

Oh, and YABU since your children have already solved this problem for you!

Coughsweet · 16/08/2024 20:23

go to Waitrose

billyt · 16/08/2024 20:23

Lidl often do a pack of eight burgers which are smaller than the norm.

I get them for my grandsons as they are easier for them to hold and eat.

Izzymoon · 16/08/2024 20:23

What’s the big deal with the kids asking to have it cut in half though?

You can make burgers in like 2.5 mins and can make them whatever size you want.

MyKidsAreTooNoisy · 16/08/2024 20:24

It looks like you already found an easy solution 🤷‍♀️. I’m always disappointed by how much burgers shrink on a BBQ

DelilahBucket · 16/08/2024 20:26

Make your own burgers? It takes minutes.

PiIsAReallyLongNumber · 16/08/2024 20:27

Smash burgers are ideal. They're thinner but still better quality than thin birds eye ones.

Fleecedandzipped · 16/08/2024 20:27

The frozen ones are usually better, in terms of ingredients, than the "fresh" ones. Frozen are usually UPF free, whereas the fresh ones often contain preservatives, among other things.

Doingthework · 16/08/2024 20:32

Honestly make your own so simple and you can have the size and thickness you want.

I use 1x pack medium mince 1x pack of the cheaper mince salt pepper and press whatever weight/size you want onto foil.

CountZacular · 16/08/2024 20:34

Just make your own burgers. You only need some mince, seasoning and something to bind. Probably better too so you can cut down on salt and preservatives.

Either that or just buy one of those massive BBQ bumper packs (if they still sell them) for the freezer and defrost what you need in advance.

feathermucker · 16/08/2024 20:36

I've seen a lot of the smashed burgers on sale lately. They look the same diameter etc as a quarter pounder but are smaller weight wise.

worcesterpear · 16/08/2024 20:38

I agree, and have started to go off beef burgers as I find it off-putting. Not so much the diameter, but the thickness. Thin burgers are nicer and better for bbqs.

bravefox · 16/08/2024 20:41

I suspect making our own is the answer, I'm just lazy 🤣

Just cut them in half and squash them back into shape before cooking.

Kneeslikethese · 16/08/2024 20:45

Go to lidl, they do them

lovelyhat · 16/08/2024 20:47

Pack of mince
1 egg, beaten
Some breadcrumbs and salt and pepper

Mix with your hands and squish into desired shape/size. Dead easy.

I used to buy the quarter pounder ones, cut them in half and then squish them in a burger press a bit like this one. You need greaseproof paper.
They end up skinny McDonald's style

Make your own, buy one and cut it up.

If you really want to ask the supermarket please email head office and don't ask in store as they can do nothing about it and they've heard 74 million frankly ridiculous half complaint that day alone about how they could do better.

Marmite27 · 16/08/2024 20:58

I’d like smaller bags of spinach while you’re asking please.

We only eat it raw, and it goes slimey really quickly.

Mum2jenny · 16/08/2024 21:02

Definitely make your own. You can decide how many grams of mince per burger. You can add minced/ chopped onions, add bespoke seasonings etc. And it’s generally cheaper. Just don’t use 5% fat mince as it’s not for enough fat for flavour. 12% fat beef mince is about right.

BoobyDazzler · 16/08/2024 21:07

Just chop them in to half/quarter.

FountainsOfPens · 16/08/2024 21:09

The good burgers are just shaped meat. Take a raw burger and split it into two and reshape it before cooking?

Roaminginthegloaming · 16/08/2024 21:11

I lived in the USA for many years and one of the things I miss are the “Sliders”.

They are very small burgers (to fit into a very small bun).

It’s a pity they’re not easily available here in the UK.
