To ask supermarkets to offer smaller burgers?

bravefox · 16/08/2024 20:22

Just that really. Whenever we do a bbq the only (non-frozen) burgers available in the supermarkets seem to be at least 1/4 pounder size.

I know lots of people enjoy big burgers but esp for kids that's a lot of meat. We did BBQ today and both kids asked for their burgers to be cut in two!

Why do no supermarkets sell McDonalds hamburger sized patties?

YANBU - offer some smaller sizes too
YABU - What's the fuss?

Just buy a packet of good quality mince, add a bit of salt and pepper and squidgy together into burgers of any size you like. Takes about 5 minutes and they taste better than the pre-prepared burgers.

The good burgers are just shaped meat. Take a raw burger and split it into two and reshape it before cooking?

I do find that you do need to press them firmly using a press as they drop to bits otherwise.

xyz111 · 16/08/2024 21:24

Just squish them flat. Aldi also do thunk ones, like Five Guys.

xyz111 · 16/08/2024 21:25

Thin ones 🙄

OhmygodDont · 16/08/2024 21:27

Smash burgers in Aldi fridge section. Four for something like £3.99. It’s meant to serve two people but obviously you just give one to each child. Job done.

I lived in the USA for many years and one of the things I miss are the “Sliders”.

They are very small burgers (to fit into a very small bun).

It’s a pity they’re not easily available here in the UK.

Everywhere was doing sliders a few years ago - you couldn't move in a gastro pub without being offered three of them for £6 on a wooden paddle with a side of sweet potato fries for an extra £3

Lovelysummerdays · 16/08/2024 21:29

Just make your own I use a big pack 750g of beef mince 5% and a 250g pork mince 12%. Season well and squish into shape or use a burger press.

Iudncuewbccgrcb · 16/08/2024 21:30

I don't personally eat burgers that much as I'm not a bread bun fan, but in our house I buy a 2 pack of quarter pounders and squish one so it makes a thinner wider burger for an adult instead of a great chunky thing that doesn't cook on the inside, and split the other in two and squish it in to two smaller thinner burgers which are the perfect size for children .

Edited

You've summed it up nicely, it's not the amount of meat so much as most are like hockey pucks and could give a child lockjaw 🤣

We did BBQ today and both kids asked for their burgers to be cut in two!

So they both got half a burger? What exactly is the problem then...?

DilemmaDelilah · 17/08/2024 07:31

What I want is smaller burger buns. By the time the burger is cooked (whether it is a thick one of a thin one) it is way smaller than the bun. I just want one that fits the burger!

I’d like smaller bags of spinach while you’re asking please.

We only eat it raw, and it goes slimey really quickly.

A square of kitchen towel in the bag helps stop this.

Edingril · 17/08/2024 07:40

Why not just make them yourself?

Lidl Dona fresh pack of the small Macdonald's style patties. Perfect for a bbq

bakebeans · 17/08/2024 07:42

You could easily solve this by just buying them from a butcher. I usually find them tastier and not much more money than the supermarket if not cheaper.

Buy the frozen ones and defrost them first.

You can just Bbq and cook them from frozen no need to faff about defrosting them.

Wow is it really that easy?

Going to try it, thanks

You'd probably achieve that by getting a ready made fresh meatball and squashing it a bit.

But honestly, burgers, meatballs, sliders etc are very easy to make and you can make them any size you like, with any type of mince and add whatever flavourings (or not) that you like.

Mrsjayy · 17/08/2024 08:14

SQUISHED meatballs that is genuis 😀
.

FinalInstructionstotheAudience · 17/08/2024 08:19

Make your own, it's not cordon bleu level cooking!

StaySpicy · 17/08/2024 08:26

Sainsburys Stamford Street burgers are small. So supermarkets do offer them 🤷‍♀️

I can't work out if people are taking the piss now.

Have we really become that far disconnected from food and cooking that people don't know that burgers, sliders, meatballs etc are just mince squashed into shapes, with the optional addition of flavouring or possibly egg or bread to bind.

TooTiredOfThisShit · 17/08/2024 08:39

I think the issue might be trying to barbecue a smaller burger. We always get the frozen ones for the oven, but I'm not sure they'd stand up to being turned on the BBQ, and/or they'd collapse through the bars? Unless you've got a flat griddle section on your BBQ I suppose.

FWIW It drives me to distraction that burgers are always sold in multiples of 4, but the buns are sold in multiples of 6!

I did a bbq station at a cub fun day. Some of the kids hadn’t seen minced beef one didn’t know that food didn’t come in a box. I would assume nothing anymore!

Lidl were selling mini burgers recently, in packs of 8. You're meant to put two in the roll I think but you could just put 1. You'd also want as small a roll as you could find too though.
