Sorry if there's a recent thread, it doesn't show up in search.

Apparently his doctors took advantage of his vulnerability and discussed things like “I wonder how much this moron will pay.” Matthew Perry: Two doctors among five charged over ketamine-related death | Evening Standard

That's awful. :(

Matthew Perry: Two doctors among five charged over ketamine-related death

An investigation into the actor’s death unearthed a ‘broad underground criminal network’, US attorney Martin Estrada said.

I've just been feeling so sad about this.

Portfun24 · 16/08/2024 12:21

Wow that's shocking. The doctor shouldn't of been given bail if the street ddealer street wasn't. At least the dealers not hiding what she is, the doctors worse in my opinion as he should be putting peoples welfare first, have better morals and likely broken multiple codes of conduct.

Newsenmum · 16/08/2024 12:23

I just saw this. Really sad :( what pathetic lives these people live

Mrsjayy · 16/08/2024 12:23

There is a thread in News if you fancy joining us to talk about it,

It's just horrific isn't it the whole thing is seedy .

I completely agree.

And apparently the judge wished one of the doctors 'good luck,' too? :( Seems a bit biased.

It's so sad, he was so vulnerable due to his addiction and drug dealers did what drug dealers do when they smell money and took advantage of him.

cansu · 16/08/2024 12:27

I would imagine he deliberately sought out unscrupulous people who would prescribe these drugs. It is very sad but not unusual I would imagine. Look at the scandal of opioid prescriptions in the US. Many doctors prescribed opiods knowing full well how addictive and damaging they were.

Thepeopleversuswork · 16/08/2024 12:28

Terrible. There seems to be an industry in Hollywood of dodgy medics preying on rich and desperate addicts like this to sell pharmaceutical grade versions of street drugs.

Not dissimilar to the guy who was sourcing strong anaesthetic for Michael Jackson (forgotten his name).

Wonder if this happens in Europe or if it’s particularly US syndrome?

It may happen in Europe, but on a vastly smaller scale than in the USA. The financial incentive to peddle big pharma’s medical opioids doesn’t exist in the same way. The scale in the USA is actually quite frightening.

And doctors as well :(

@cansu ah, yes it makes sense that they wouldn't be the most ethical people if they can prescribe in a way they knew wasn't the best for the person, but solely for their own gain. There will be guidelines on the fringe usage of that drug and they didn't follow them. A bit like Michael Jackson's doctor.

Yes I read about this message and found it awfully sad too.

I hope he goes to prison.

Even in 'big pharma' in the States, there will be guidelines on what to prescribe, similar to how we have the BMF in the UK. Presumably they weren't following them.

Indeed. The rewards are much higher there.

I assume that’s why prescription opioid abuse has never been anywhere near the epidemic here which it is in the US. It’s not unheard of here obviously but it hasn’t wiped out whole communities.

Hateam · 16/08/2024 12:34

Matthew Perry was 100 % responsible for what he put in his body but my god there were some evil people around him who took advantage of him. To me they are sub-human.

USA is the country where you can buy large bottles of pain killers off the shelf the same way as a bottle of smarties.

There are certainly private “lifestyle” doctors in London who do this - maybe not ketamine, but definitely sleeping tablets and opioids.

The two doctors I know of who do this both failed out of mainstream medical training at SHO level, ie incredibly junior and shouldn’t be working in an unsupervised setting. One set up an online practice, the other is the in-house doctor for some sort of wellness clinic (massage, injectables, and then her prescribing drugs of abuse). I have literally no idea how they revalidate, but I guess their RO is probably also dodgy.

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 16/08/2024 13:18

Maybe that's what he meant when he said if I died people would be shocked but not surprised.

Hopefully this will help blow open some of the shenanigans that goes on in Hollywood.

The was no real incentive for his doctors to help him get clean and stay clean as there's no money in it for them.

Certainly puts a very different perspective of the drowning moron scene in Friends that some are campaigning to have edited out.

Blake77 · 16/08/2024 13:34

Supply and demand

McSilkson · 16/08/2024 13:35

So similar to what happened to poor Elvis, almost 50 years ago... :(

lcakethereforeIam · 16/08/2024 13:45

Drug dealers with a medical degree and a nice office.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 16/08/2024 13:47

I’m not surprised in the least that illegal drug dealers (and that includes the doctor) view their customers as income streams and don’t see them as humans deserving of kindness. If you cared about people then you wouldn’t participate in the drugs trade (as a user or dealer) because you would feel guilty about the misery that the drugs trade creates.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 16/08/2024 13:50

If you haven’t seen Dope Sick about the opioid crisis in the US then I suggest that you do. It’s heartbreaking, shocking and eye opening for someone like me who had heard of the crisis but hadn’t looked into it in detail.

It’s available on several streaming platforms like Disney +

It's awful. The inevitable consequence of having a for profit healthcare system.

CosmicDaisyChain · 16/08/2024 13:51

This is a snapshot of what Hollywood is like beneath the surface. Many famous people are addicts there and it becomes normalised as a culture. Private doctors will pretty do anything for money there.
