EVERYONE taking advantage of my staff discount

I work for a luxury British brand, and we receive a very generous staff discount. When I first joined the company, I kept this discount between me, my mum, sisters, and sister-in-law. Unfortunately, my sister-in-law couldn't keep it quiet and told her sisters. Soon enough, I started receiving shopping lists from them (SILs sisters) with all the things they wanted to buy using my staff discount, this is ongoing and I still get requests from them every now and again - just to add instead of asking me directly, they go through my sister-in-law, which is frustrating and rude.

My mum nor my sisters have ever asked me to use my discount - probably because they know anything I gift them will be from work, haha!

With my sister-in-law's loose lips, she let it slip to my cousin one day who then asked to use it, so I agreed because it was a present for her daughter. Recently, this cousin and her sister who are travelling abroad soon, asked me separately to use my discount so they could buy gifts for their friends. This really irritates me.

I'm sick a tired of people wanting to use my discount and I'm angry at my SIL for telling everyone about the discount and I get nothing in return from anyone for it.

Am I being unreasonable?

People have the right to ask you for discount.

Whether you give it to them is another matter.

They don't actually.

Slobberchops1 · 16/08/2024 12:13

If it’s allows I don’t see the problem . Seems a bit mean

RB68 · 16/08/2024 12:18

yeah just tell them work are doubling down - no more orders except for personal use

Fleetheart · 16/08/2024 12:42

@pinkyredrose only on mumsnet will people bother to argue about whether something is luxury or not. Your opinion only of course and you can think what you like, but its market positioning is certainly at the luxury end 🤗

AwkwardAadvark · 16/08/2024 12:48

I've got a blue light card and some cheeky school mum kept asking me for codes. I just said we're not allowed which is true.

Edited

If you think Hotel Chocolat is luxury then you don't know what luxury is.

Fleetheart · 16/08/2024 12:52

@pinkyredrose ok Pinky whatever you say; you’re obviously the arbiter of luxury British items

twilightcafe · 16/08/2024 12:54

Voted YABU because you need to start talking and tell people the discount is no longer available.

Mirabai · 16/08/2024 13:01

I don’t understand why you’ve let this happen.

If it's allowed I'd do it. If not, just tell them it's not allowed.

This.

AgnesX · 16/08/2024 16:14

My BIL works for John Lewis and says he's not allowed to get stuff for F&F. Whether that's true I don't know but it works. It's a polite way of saying no if nothing else.

whowhatwerewhy · 16/08/2024 17:17

@AgnesX
Your BIL is correct, the John Lewis discount is only for employees and it's " not in the spirit " of the system for it to be used for F & F .
Plus's as you say a very polite way in saying no .

Auburngal · 16/08/2024 17:48

Just say that there has been an employee who got dismissed for misuse of their discount and you don't want to get dismissed yourself.

exaltedwombat · 16/08/2024 17:56

If extended family use is within the terms of your discount entitlement, why not? If it isn't, tell them so.

Yes they are very strict

Littlesunshinemoon · 16/08/2024 18:30

Please be careful! My husband works for a luxury department store in London (which once had a Diane and Fayed memorial 😉) and his discount is absolutely only be used with a card in his name and for his personal use. Abusing the policy would result in immediate termination.

Lovetoplan · 16/08/2024 18:57

It's a serious breach of company policy. If you are found out you can be sacked for gross misconduct. It is considered stealing. Be VERY careful!

BlueFlowers5 · 16/08/2024 19:18

Don't risk your job OP, just maybe keep it to your DM and DSis?

Makingchocolatecake · 16/08/2024 19:18

Just fib to extended family that you can only buy a tiny amount due to rule change so they can't use it anymore.

Whyamiherenow · 16/08/2024 19:33

Maybe you could get some payment in kind? Reduce the discount amount so you keep a percentage?

AtlanticMum · 16/08/2024 19:51

It’s totally unacceptable OP and you could come under fire or potentially lose your job for overusing it. As another poster mentioned - it is mis-conduct and it is also damaging to the brand to have this going on. Plus - the sheer PITA of processing all of these never ending third hand orders has got to be exhausting and stressful. I would strongly advise on cutting it out. Save your discount to treat yourself and close family when you wish to. And that way the policy is left safely and respectfully in place for all of your colleagues also.

goingdownfighting · 16/08/2024 20:03

If you're allowed to use it as much as you like for whoever you like I would tell them that it has reduced.

Or just tell them someone got fired at work and they're really clamping down. But that applies to everyone.

Franticbutterfly · 16/08/2024 20:42

I've know people to get the sack for misusing staff discount. Say there has been a crackdown.

WigglyVonWaggly · 16/08/2024 20:54

Tell them that your employer is capping the personal limit for employee discounts to prevent abuse of this goodwill perk and therefore it will now be for your own personal use.

Depends on your company policy, some allow staff discounts to be shared up to a certain financial limit or at limited times of the year ie sales.
