Just an observation, out for dinner with friends last Saturday night. We got taxis in, we always had a booze fest but now my friends have either cut out alcohol completely or stuck to one glass of wine or gin & tonic! Is alcohol going out of fashion in over 40, middle class circles or is it just my friends?

It's not going out of fashion, it's usually by the time you hit 40 the hang overs are a killer & because you've matured you think of the hang over before having too much to drink. That's my take on it anyway. & the fact that a night out costs an absolute fortune now many can't afford to drink as much as they used to in their younger days due to the cost & having more outgoings in your 40s than you did in your younger days when you had more disposable income.

I never did get hangovers, because I did not binge drink when I was younger ow now. I still drink like I did when I was younger.

As I got older I found I got tipsy quicker and it took me longer to recover, then I started getting really awful heartburn so I gave up alcohol about 3 years ago. I love the taste so still drink zero alcohol beer and cider when I'm out, just tap water at home.

Not true. Shame to throw an unsubstantiated label 'snobbishness' into an interesting and helpful thread.
Only England statistics below but the rest of the UK and rest of the world stats can be found too

Difference in how people drink, how often they drink, where and quantities. And yes, absolute snobbery.
