Witholding my rent AIBU

I'm a woman in my late 40s, living in a 3-bed Victorian terrace in West London, where I pay £1,200 a month with all bills included. I signed an AST in May.
I work in recruitment and DJ on the side. Despite being skilled in my job, financial difficulties have arisen following my mother’s death, and I've struggled with timely rent payments. I’m currently in therapy to manage my depression.
Recently, my landlady has begun Airbnb-ing the living room, removing the communal space I was paying for. Given this change, I believe the £1,200 rent is no longer justified.
Additionally, she inappropriately contacted my boss, (my boss was my reference) about paying rent directly and has threatened eviction. I’ve consulted Citizens Advice and suspect my deposit wasn’t placed in a Tenancy Deposit Scheme (TDS), which may breach legal requirements.
Due to these issues, I’ve withheld my rent since August 1st and am prepared to take further action if needed.

I do miss the latest installment and shamelessly bumping thread to see what happens.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 22/09/2024 22:01

It was all either a total wind up as the thread changed totally when the Op decided she has a drug habit

or

the lady who offered her a room in her social housing contacted her, and the Op accepted the offer - esp with the offer of a life time tenancy upon the other poster's death

Ok, let's make it up.....

In my head, OP has stayed in the house, but now it turns out she’s got not just a coke habit but also a gambling one. Things escalated when she had a bit of a psychotic episode one night, banging around and scaring the other tenants, who now want out.
The landlady, at her wit’s end, offers to forgive all the arrears and even pay £1200 to get her to leave. But… the catch is she’ll only get the £1200 on the day she signs a deed of surrender. Now she’s refusing to go because she "can’t even afford the SpareRoom early bird"—let alone go and view other places. LL is feeling close to a psychotic episode herself at this point

It's the plot of this year's Xmas play at the Old Vic!

Honestly the ops either kicked out or on her way to being so.

Prob moping around wherever she happens to be in some drug induced woe is me refusing all proper reasonable help. Slowly edging further and further towards a rock bottom break.

unless she did something very stupid since the landlady moved back in and got herself arrested.

Sadly may I add.

GoldPlayer · 25/09/2024 19:40

It would be a blessing if she was arrested—it would give her boss, landlord, and flatmates a much-needed break. People like this are a nightmare, the never own their s*, and become a real headache for everyone around them!
