Dislocated little toe...anyone work in A and E?

Itsallfunngamesuntil · 15/08/2024 08:58

Managed to stub my wee toe this morning
Wee toe sitting at 45 degree angle to other toes...pretty sure it's dislocated.

I'm currently lying down with foot elevated
..bandaged and strapped to other toes

I phoned GP who said I'd need to go to a and e. Friends who have dislocated their toe before have said A and E will do nothing..
And will just tell me to do what I'm currently doing.

Any medics aabout who can advise, as I don't really want to sit in A and E for hours n hours to be told to just go home and do what you're lready doing?

Thank you

You are being unreasonable.....go to a and e

You are NOT being unreasonable......elevate foot, bandage it and strap it at home

I think you need to go to A&E so they can check that you have actually put the toe back in the correct place, that there's no fracture, and if there is a fracture, that the bone is correctly aligned

Do you have a walk in clinic nearby, might be better than sitting in A&E for hours.

No walk in clinics unfortunately

They won’t do anything for a break, but it isn’t broken. I very much doubt they will look at a toe pointing sideways and do absolutely nothing.

I’ve broken a few toes in my time. The good news each time was that, once the initial swelling went down, the pain was manageable and healed quickly. I hope it’s the same for your injuryFlowers

Ponoka7 · 15/08/2024 09:05

Only go to somewhere with x ray facilities, or you are wasting your time. A&E would xray it, but they might not do much. Phone 111 and see what they say.

QuestionableMouse · 15/08/2024 09:05

It needs xraying to see what you've actually done and then treating appropriately.

romdowa · 15/08/2024 09:06

Your toe is at a sidewards angle to your foot! Of course you need to go to a n e to have it put back into its original position 🙃 you could cause worse damage trying to relocate it yourself.

Leafygreen84 · 15/08/2024 09:09

Christ alive. I have a really high threshold for going to A&E but your toe is pointing the wrong way 🫣 please do go! They’ll do nothing for a break but they will fix it if it’s dislocated! Be prepared for a long wait, take a book and some snacks. Good luck!

AlwaysFreezing · 15/08/2024 09:10

I did this. 2 toes at a jaunty angle. A&E popped them back in after an x ray. It was super efficient, I think because it was so straightforward.

Two of my friends had same thing....toes pointing at an angle. They told me a and e did nothing. Hence my question

But if your friends didn't receive any treatment, OP, does that mean their toes have been left permanently dislocated? That seems unlikely to me. It's true that fractured toes tend to be treated conservatively, but a dislocated bone would always need to be reduced (put back in place).

Highlighta · 15/08/2024 09:19

Not a medic, but my dd is a dancer so broken and damaged toes are par for the course here.

She just self treats them now, with a ice and buddy wrap.
BUT if it is sticking out at an angle I really think you need to have it looked at.

They won't do much for a broken little toe, except give you some pain killers and strapping it but this doesn't right.

Emma0987 · 15/08/2024 09:28

A friend dislocated/broke her wee baby toe and she ended up having to have a an operation to have a pin put in. Please get it checked atleast any advise given is relevant to your own situation as no 2 events are the same outcome.

Itsallfunngamesuntil · 15/08/2024 09:28

Thanks everyone for your help

Going to go to a and e

As your GP said go to an ED. The exception to x-raying little toes is when they're dislocated.

UprootedSunflower · 15/08/2024 09:41

My friend who works as an A&E told me to gently pull the toe, the traction would pop it in.
I nearly threw up at the feeling when it worked, but it was probably less painful than hours of waiting and getting there with the toe pointing sideways.
Not recommend- but my anecdote

zzplex · 15/08/2024 09:41

I dislocated a toe when I was a teenager. Trip to A&E, x-ray to see if anything was broken, then they put the toe joint back in its correct position.

apairofblueeyes100 · 15/08/2024 09:42

Go to a&e - I dislocated and broke my little toe. Got x-rayed and whilst there is nothing they will do with the break, the dislocation had to be sorted - which was fine and I got a local anesthetic for this.

Good luck.

Itsallfunngamesuntil · 15/08/2024 10:14

Thanks again everyone

I'll give you an update when I have one.

Just arrived at a and e now

I did this. Thought i5 was dislocated but it was broken. Had gas and wire while they pulled it back into position 🤢. It was absolutely fine after that!

OlympicBlue · 15/08/2024 10:17

A medical professional told you to go so I’m glad you are going. It doesn’t matter if your friends had nothing done. They were still checked by a medical professional. And then had nothing done.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 15/08/2024 10:25

I did this, caught it on a wooden path edge, I just strapped it to the one next to it, it pulled it back into place, I was in Majorca though and hours away from a hospital so seemed the best thing to do at the time. UK i probably would have gone to A&E. I got lucky and it's healed fine, keep it strapped, i did for i think 5 weeks, just used medical tape to hold the toes together with some cotton in between to stop any rubbing.
Hope it's not too painful OP.

That's great if it's just dislocated but imagine if it were broken and you damaged it further?

DH broke his finger, thankfully he went to A&E and didn't try to treat it himself as the bone was shattered and needed to be operated on to pin it back together.

CoffeandTiaMaria · 15/08/2024 11:51

I’ve dislocated my little toe several times, I just pushed it back into place and strapped it to the next one.
Kept it elevated as much as possible and admired the spectacular bruise!
