And if so what do you earn? I am in a professional career but don’t earn masses, it’s only really at the top when you tend to start making a lot. That said we are all on above minimum wage and salaries in range of 50-70k.

Everyone I work with has designer bags, coats from Reiss, Nike Air trainers etc. I have none of these and it wouldn’t occur to me to buy them as I would find it a huge outlay on my salary (mid range of the above). Do people just spend this? Even on a modest income? What do you sacrifice to buy it? I am in rented which is 1500 a month so maybe that is the difference?

No but I spend a ton on my kids music lessons and the dog 😂. I get most of my clothes on eBay (similar salaries but London border so high cost area and 3 kids). If those things mattered to me I could prioritise them.

Hairyesterdaygonetoday · 16/08/2024 08:32

Never earned much more than average wage. Not interested in designer stuff. Will spend a lot on something I really want eg home improvements (gradually perfecting our forever home) or an occasional big holiday. Also, like PP, will spend a lot on good practical footwear!
DH is the same, so it works for us.

Wrennyjenwren · 16/08/2024 08:53

My Nike Airs are from Vinted. I never pay full price.

Sennelier1 · 16/08/2024 09:04

I'm not much into "brands" but usually buy good quality so it lasts. Yes a bit more expensive but worth it I think. I own clothes that are over 20 years old. Often I alter them to fit my now "somewhat older" body or my changing taste.

I live in the South East, an expensive commuter town. We earn £100k combined, live in a 4 bed detached with 2 children.

If you can't make £60k work for you, to feel like a decent income, then you're not managing your money well.

No one is forcing you to live in london.£60k remains a very healthy salary.

I manage my money just fine and we each earn more than double that so I don't have to try and make 60k work. I was simply saying it's not much money and esp in London it's not much money at all.

JLou08 · 16/08/2024 17:23

I earn less than you, I have Nike trainers and a designer bag but it's nothing to do with the name of them. I've had my bag for about 5 years, I bought it because it was good quality that would last and that I could carry my laptop in when needed. I've had my Nike trainers about 2 years, they still look new after a lot of wear and are the most comfortable trainers I've ever had.
I also shop at Primark and New Look, I've had trainers and bags from there in the past that haven't lasted, it would have been more expensive to keep replacing them than to pay more for better quality.

Parker231 · 16/08/2024 17:33

I want good quality items and can pay for them but don’t want often oversized displays of the brand name plastered over the item. A brand name doesn’t mean it’s good quality- it’s marketing.

I don’t actually care. If you didn’t buy a bag in the 1950-80s you simply won’t know. I’m happy with my bag that is now 15 years old. My other bag is older and it’s perfect. One has multiplied in value because other people value them. If you don’t , fine. No one in real life is bothered. I’ve still got a £2000 bag that’s going sell for £5000 and I keep it in its box. I don’t use it very often, So whatever people think on U tube, I don’t care and neither does anyone else who wants one. Looks like they still do! All over the world.

Yes they are still coveted but the quality has been declining. Chanel in particular has really dropped its standards and is now running off its reputation sadly

TizerorFizz · 16/08/2024 19:15

That’s utter rubbish. You really think a £7000 bag is poorly made? They are not. Get a classic flap bag and you cannot go wrong. Nothing fancy. Just an iconic bag. I do agree they are way too expensive but that’s another matter.

gamerchick · 16/08/2024 19:53

Man, people are fierce over handbags Grin

I have masses of fancy designer stuff - all of which I got on eBay for about £20

I haven't bought anything new in 20 years apart from bras

And knickers hopefully..Grin

You really don't want to admit that quality is an issue ...

Yes, I know what you were saying but it's wrong. £60k IS a healthy salary. It's far more than the average person earns and should afford you a nice lifestyle. Maybe not a champagne lifestyle, but a comfortable one. If it's not, then you're not managing your money right.

197836543q · 19/08/2024 22:03

Our household income is circa 135k. I don't buy designer stuff, think it's a waste!! I shop on vinted, primark, some 'decent' high street brands...no way i could bring myself to spend hundreds on one item of clothing.

Nadeed · 19/08/2024 22:05

@197836543q but you could if you wanted to.

Well, the avg house price in London is over 500k and you can't borrow more than 240k on a 60k salary so... I guess agree to disagree? When I only made 60k it certainly didn't feel like enough though I knew it was only temporary so I was ok with it.

Powderblue1 · 19/08/2024 23:23

My husband bought me a designer bag when we were on our honeymoon (15 years ago) and a £2k watch for a big wedding anniversary. Other than that we don't go in for designer brands and day to day I happily shop high street/love a charity shop too.

Our family income is £250k pa.

Most people will be on the property ladder before they earn £60k though so will have equity already.

@RunningThroughMyHead In London??? Really? You have no idea of prices if you think that. Two salaries at that level and a hefty deposit needed!

I bought a 2 bed flat in London for 400k in 2019 on 75k combined. We lived with family for 3 years and saved 60k plus 10k DH had in savings before he went to uni.

My flat value is still the same.

We now earn 121k combined and we will probably be able to afford a place at the 500k mark which is around London average house price. It buys us a flat in our area though!
