Do you own these sorts of things?!

And if so what do you earn? I am in a professional career but don’t earn masses, it’s only really at the top when you tend to start making a lot. That said we are all on above minimum wage and salaries in range of 50-70k.

Everyone I work with has designer bags, coats from Reiss, Nike Air trainers etc. I have none of these and it wouldn’t occur to me to buy them as I would find it a huge outlay on my salary (mid range of the above). Do people just spend this? Even on a modest income? What do you sacrifice to buy it? I am in rented which is 1500 a month so maybe that is the difference?

@wellington77 Who does that? Would you recognise understated brands? Of is it just a myth you are ordering from 30 years ago? There are some hugely dated comments on here.

Not sure what you are objecting to? The idea that I could spot designer clothes if the brand name isn’t on show or the idea that i think a lot of designer clothes do have their brand name on show?

TizerorFizz · 15/08/2024 00:38

@Hanniel The biggest fashion waste is cheap throw away fashion that’s poorly made from crap fabrics. I still have my high class handbags. They aren’t in landfill. They are worth multiples of what I paid for them. Well looked after high end clothes last.

Hanniel · 15/08/2024 00:43

MidnightMeltdown · 15/08/2024 00:32

John Lewis sell Reiss. It's not designer, it's high street.

Okay, thanks?

Not sure what I'm supposed to take from your comment to be honest - I'm just replying to the OP. I don't really care either way, my taste is pretty plain and utility, and I've never given one single thought to what other people wear/like/spend their money on.

TizerorFizz · 15/08/2024 00:46

@Hanniel So why comment? How odd!

Not sure why you've aimed this at me. I don't buy fast fashion, or any fashion. My comment about 'waste' was about my preference to not have anything that I don't use/wear/need regularly. Waste, as in if I don't need it, it's a waste.

Huh?

I'm replying/commenting to the OP. The question was 'do you buy these things?' I don't, so that's what I said. What's odd about that?!

spikeandbuffy24 · 15/08/2024 00:55

I earn just above min wage and I'm a sale/cashback/bargain lover!

Handbags- most expensive ones are coach. Heavily reduced

I do own £25 trainers, one pair was £9 and they're leather from La redoute. Vans for £24 brand new. Again sale prices, Quidco cashback

Clothes mostly M&S, Dorothy Perkins type prices but I have a lot of nice waterproof stuff from seasalt, spraywayand technical wear for riding, plus peloton exercise stuff. Again all sale prices

You're going on about labels, but this discussion isn't about labels. It's about mid-range high street.

If you shop in John Lewis, then your answer is most likely 'yes' - you do buy 'these sorts of things'.

Nobody goes out and buys Reiss because they want a particular label, they just see it and pick it up when browsing regular high street stores - like John Lewis.

I'm not sure why you're taking issue with anything I've said.

I'm not 'going on about labels.' The OP referred to designer bags etc. I said I didn't buy them. That's it.

I said I buy from John Lewis et al, and you've banged on several times about Reiss.

Nothing I've said is in the least bit controversial or even very interesting.

I don't think we have much else to say to each other, so I'll bid you a pleasant evening!

PinkArt · 15/08/2024 01:18

£300 is about two days salary at £50k. I don't think that sounds unreasonable for a decent quality coat they you could easily wear for half the year.
If you're going to buy more expensive items, arguably coats, bags and footwear, that you wear so much, are going to give you the best cost per wear. And obviously if you don't want to, or can't afford to, buy more expensive stuff then that's fine too!

I don't care one jot for designer labels, nor does DH or the DC. We just buy what we need, when we need it and buy the most suitable thing. It wouldn't occur to me to buy a 'label.'

All I've said is that OP is not talking about designer labels - she is talking about mid-range high street (which is where you shop). You are very clearly going on about labels here Hmm

The OP mentioned designer bags. I said I didn't buy them. I referred to them in the short paragraph you've quoted. Literally nothing happened here.

Could you please give it a rest now?

@TeachesOfPeaches ive never spent more than 25 quid on trainers so over 100 seems extortionate to me!

Wowza! Not sure I’ve ever spent less than £50 on trainers, not because I want the label but because I want them to last years and look tidy not falling apart! I am in a much higher income bracket than you but even when I wasn’t, I bought not very many things but always exactly the thing I wanted. EG, our sofa is pretty grim and has been for several years, but I knew we’d have the next one for 20+ years so waited until I was ok spending £5k on a really good quality custom one. DH and I didn’t have any furniture when we bought our first flat and just lived without most things and only bought when we could afford the one we loved and expected to keep for 20 years.

Nadeed · 15/08/2024 02:14

You are on well above minimum range. If at mid point about three times minimum wage.

Nadeed · 15/08/2024 02:15

@Happyhappyday My last pair of trainers were about £10, about 10 years ago, They are still going strong.

Bellsandthistle · 15/08/2024 04:02

Honestly mumsnet, where everyone makes +£100,000 but feeds their family for a week with one chicken, isn’t the best place to ask.

Scottishgirl85 · 13/08/2024 08:02

I earn double your salary, and my husband more again, and I don't own these things because I don't want to. I genuinely don't understand designer stuff, it's just a label.

There is a huge quality difference between designer bags and high street ones. The same goes for shoes, coats, other clothing.

But if it’s of no interest to you, or doesn’t bring you joy then there is no point in buying them.

Mummadeze · 15/08/2024 06:04

No, I don’t but I could if I didn’t go on holiday so often or buy so many takeaways. Everyone prioritises something. Am on the top range of the salary band you mentioned. And have a big credit card bill to be honest.

Mercurial123 · 15/08/2024 06:19

Nike is just a high street brand. You can get them on sale all the time. Reiss women's wear is mainly overpriced with a lot of polyester man made fibres, so I wouldn't buy there. These items aren't luxury.

Designer quality has declined massively. Just look on YouTube. People are complaining about the quality at Chanel (leather peeling away, wonky stiching). Christian Dior is selling a bag for €2,000+ and costing just €53 to make. Yet people are still buying it.

Carebearsonmybed · 15/08/2024 06:27

Can you even get trainers for £25?

I thought I was a cheapskate getting Skechers for £60!

Whatineed · 15/08/2024 06:28

Are they buying from Vinted, outlet centres, savvy sale shoppers or asking for clothing as gifts perhaps?

Arrivapercy · 15/08/2024 06:53

Ive never seen trainers recently for £25 that wouldn't fall apart due to being poor quality. I also avoid some of the very cheapest clothing and shoes for several reasons

  • poor fabrics
  • poor construction
  • probably made by badly treated workers

I don't go in for masses of "designer" but things like a Reiss coat I'd regard as a good quality smart item that I'd wear for years, so £300 wouldn't be excessive.

A good leather handbag will also wear well, i have a lovely aspinal one ive had 10 years and used loads and its still in lovely condition.

I have a trench coat from burberrys bought quite a few years ago and it's classic, they never go out of fashion, all the material & linings are good quality and its well made. They are more expensive now but at the price I paid it was worth it for years and years of wear.

Icannoteven · 15/08/2024 06:54

I started buying more expensive things a few years ago (on a much lower salary than you plus I have small children and live in a city). I bought a £250 winter coat and some Biden dresses for my girls. Sea salt tops etc, more expensive shoes, designer glasses.

They last much, much longer than the things I used to buy. The coat, for example, has lasted me the last six winters. Previously I would have spent 30-40 quid on a winter coat every year or two so it actually works out cheaper.

Buying cheap is a false economy (esp. in the days of klarna!).

That said, I make my buying decisions based on quality - I wouldn’t buy a brand for the sake of a brand, I would look at a garment, the materials, the tailoring etc.
