To think the Co op should not allow this?

Just been to my small local Co op for a few things and chuggers just inside the door. It was so intimidating. Right there in my face as I walked in. Ignored them as they tried to engage with me as I waked in, they tried again as I walked out and called have a nice day as I left. I do give to various charities but I do hate this.

they must be making a lot of money out of it to pay all the chuggers but really?

If they don't hit their commission targets, they get sacked very quickly. It's a high churn exploitative model all round.

JudgementalRaccoon · 12/08/2024 21:02

There are rules about fundraising, including not manipulating people or trying to make them feel guilty, not blocking exits, not approaching people who are seated or in a queue, being clear that they are fundraising, and most importantly, not continuing to ask people if they have shown, including by a gesture, that they are not interested.

Collecting money or other property

This section covers collections of money or other property (including goods and regular gifts) for charitable institutions, whether carried out on the street, house-to-house or on private sites.

@JudgementalRaccoon you literally just listed all the techniques charity muggers use!

LoveSummerNotIcecream · 12/08/2024 21:06

Just put on your most unfriendly voice and announce loudly, “God no, I hate cats/dogs/children/hospices/whatever” and keep walking. They’ll be so taken aback by you they won’t ask again.

I had someone collecting for Battersea dogs home ring the doorbell at 7:30 two nights ago just when I’d got my youngest to bed. It woke him up and I was not impressed. Just shouted at them that I hate dogs and couldn’t eat a whole one. He went away clearly thinking I was bonkers. I noticed they’re still canvassing my street, but avoiding my house.

And clearly I’ve never eaten dog, it was a joke.

BobbyBiscuits · 12/08/2024 21:09

If they're inside the shop then they've paid to be there. If they're on the public street outside then that's their free choice.
They shouldn't be intimidating? Chuggers are usually very smiley and friendly? I've always just politely said hello and said sorry I'm busy, but good luck.
If they genuinely were rude or threatening then do report them to the shop if inside, or the charity they represent.

Musiclover234 · 12/08/2024 21:11

i hate it. i donate to charity as i see fit. Not in the street with my bank details.

Had one who was working for cancer charity called after me oh so you don’t want to help sick children then!? My reply … i do, every day in work, more than you ever will understand. (Paeds ward). It made me angry to use emotional blackmail so he could hit targets

JudgementalRaccoon · 12/08/2024 21:11

@NotA6FigureSalary
I know! Its worth being able
to quote the Code of Fundraising Practice at them when they do through.

weegiemum · 12/08/2024 21:11

I used to get stopped a lot in the city centre, walking to the train station.

They don't engage with someone in a wheelchair though. I've not been approached once in the 12 years I've been in one!

Barneysmomma · 12/08/2024 21:15

I work in a hospital and was stopped by chuggers in the foyer of my place of work to ask if I would set up a direct debit for the air ambulance service- I was clearly in an NHS uniform!

Ellie56 · 12/08/2024 21:21

velvetcoat · 12/08/2024 19:13

YANBU- they are really persistent and irritating. Best way I've found to get rid is to simply tell them, "I already have a direct debit set up with your charity". It's a total lie but they have nowhere to go with it if you already donate PLUS it makes you sound generous if anyone is watching/listening so they cant then hassle you any more.

Works every time.

Yes I've done similar. I say I already donate to X charity (usually I mean I donate goods not money) but they don't know that.

GrannyWeatherwaxsHatpin · 12/08/2024 21:46

I loathe chuggers. If no one gave to them charities wouldn’t use them.

I generally just say “No, thanks” and walk past. Most leave it there. A few try the smart arse approach and get a smart arse answer in return (“Do you care about children?” “No, can’t stand the little fuckers.”)

For those who wants to be rude or personal, it’s fair game as far as I’m concerned. I took great delight in berating a rude RSPCA chugger for as long and as loudly as I could in the middle of a railway station. He kept trying edge away from me so I followed him, just like they do Grin

DancingFerret · 12/08/2024 18:41

If I have the time, ask them at length all about their charity - in French. I've yet to find one who understands, and I make a point of gesticulating and demanding their attention as many possible targets walk by, usually with a grin and sometimes a thumbs-up.

I do the same using sign language. They're so embarrassed and can't wait to get rid of me!

Bodeganights · 12/08/2024 22:16

I didn't know chuggers were back, I haven't seen one in a long time. They used to range down the high street.
I used to charmingly say I do not give my bank details to complete strangers on the street.
Also, I already give to the charity you are working for, before they even told me which charity it was.

These days I'd (if I had time) look up the specific charity, make sure they were a real charity, look at that charities accounts and say something like, well hell they have 70 billion sat dormant in an account, come back to me when they're on their last 10k and I'll think about it.
And/or, well the top brass in said charity are on x000s of pounds salary. That is 1000 times more than my salary. Get them to give money.

And if no time, a sweet little not today love. I SAID NOT TODAY LOVE.

I have bookmarked that and might just open the page the next time one makes me feel chippy.

Thanks so much for all the replies, glad to know I’m not the only one.

Went to the Co op again yesterday, more chuggers different charity, Great Ormond Children's hospital this time, I wouldn't have minded contributing to a tin collection but we have our own children's hospital in Wales!

Why does uniform matter?

Just say "No thanks" and keep walking. You don't have to stop, you don't have to engage in conversation and you certainly don't have to justify yourself. It's only a problem if you let it be a problem.

Same here, I smile, say ‘no thanks’ and go about my day!

FredericC · 15/08/2024 12:06

They're in pretty much every shop now I've noticed.

Easiest way to deal with them is just to say 'no thanks!' as if they're trying to sell or offer you something, which they are. Or you can ignore them. It might feel rude but it's fine.

They rarely have any capacity to accept money I've found.

In the past at times I have offered to donate, and they've said no. They can't accept donations, they want your bank details to take a regular donation lol.

Absolute joke. If they were genuinely trying to raise money for charity they'd have a pot for cash and a card reader to take card donations. No issues with chucking a couple quid in, but as very few people carry cash anymore it's just not possible.

Edited

I love those responses haha.

'Dog lover?'
'Nope, can't stand them'
'Don't you care about children?'
'Nope'
'Support the cats!'
'Already supporting two of them'

They are taken aback but that's just what you get when you ask total strangers by interrupting their day questions unfortunately. They rely on you feeling embarrassed to say no, I don't care.

stopscrollingandgettowork · 15/08/2024 12:09

Why do they allow it ? - they get paid

it’s always about money 💰 I agree it’s awful

LetMeGoogleThat · 15/08/2024 13:08

I work for a charity and hate chuggers, I also dislike the charities that are using them as its a top slice off the funding that goes to support the cause. I always ask them to tell me more about the mission and values of the charity, knowing that they can't because it's not in the script they're giving or straight up so, do you donate any of your earnings to them?? Then smile and walk away 😈😈

They're not allowed to approach anyone who is obviously working. Please consider reporting it to the Fundraising Regulator.
