To think the Co op should not allow this?

Just been to my small local Co op for a few things and chuggers just inside the door. It was so intimidating. Right there in my face as I walked in. Ignored them as they tried to engage with me as I waked in, they tried again as I walked out and called have a nice day as I left. I do give to various charities but I do hate this.

I had the same yesterday outside Asda but it was dogs, and I said exactly the same as you! 😂

I had one who called after me “Don’t you care about world peace?”

Well, obviously not. 🙂

@PensionMention I have taken to using only cash in Poundland because of this

WorriedMama12 · 12/08/2024 18:27

You've reminded me of the worst one I've experienced - a chugger outside primark years ago that used to use the line "do you want to help kids with cancer?" while rattling his tin at you and making eye contact. I was only 18/19 at the time, a skint student and used to feel awful mumbling "sorry" as I walked past.

It's so bloody annoying.... you look friendly....my reply is...looks are deceiving and walk off.

I'm always tempted to say my bite is worse than my bark... The ones outside other supermarkets are ok but the co op ones seem particularly annoying and persistent.

MoonAndStarsAndSky · 12/08/2024 18:28

They're doing this in my local Tesco for food bank donations. They give out a list and a paper bag and ask you to buy the items on the list. The first time I did it happily but I don't want to/ can't afford to do it every time I go into the shop and you're made to feel awful if you decline.

bellocchild · 12/08/2024 18:28

You could say firmly - to their faces!- that you would never engage with or donate to anyone who was chugging.

tobee · 12/08/2024 18:29

Find this constantly recently. Especially bad if it's people trying to set you up on a direct debit. Or, recently, when it was "can you give £XX to feed a family for Y meals?" I've given a couple of times when it's just a bucket type thing if I have cash.

They ask you on the way out and in. I said "not today thank you' and felt really shit as I had a trolley full of stuff. I don't want to feel guilty at the supermarket. I don't mind if it's buying stuff for the food banks and they never ask and seem really grateful.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 12/08/2024 18:31

Tell them you already donate monthly to whatever they’re chugging about. Works every time.

GoldenLegend · 12/08/2024 18:31

They seem to target women who are alone, as if we have nothing else to do with our time. I give them my best side-eye and walk past.

PinkPolkadotFlamingo · 12/08/2024 18:32

I just cut them off before getting drawn into any kind of conversation by saying "I am in a rush" and carry on walking. Similarly, if a chugger knocks on my door it's "I am in the middle of a call" and I shut the door immediately afterwards.

stripycats · 12/08/2024 18:35

I hate them. My ds1 has a principle of always giving something to beggars so 'they don't feel invisible' and, inexperienced in these matters, he offered his loose change to a chugger, only to be laughed at. A high proportion of them seem to be exceedingly rude.

Delphiniumandlupins · 12/08/2024 18:35

I have been very involved with a charity, as a volunteer, and was upset to discover they had used chuggers. Have also done lots of can collections in the street and in supermarkets and we were firmly told not to shout at people or get in their way. (Mild can rattling only.) The exuberance of chuggers grates.

Whammyammy · 12/08/2024 18:36

As they approach us my husband silently mouth 'go away', which usually works. If not his second phrase is less cordial

Was out with our heavily pregnant daughter for a very, very rare lunch treat. Approached us saying “you look like lovely, kind ladies, who care about young people”
I said “no, can’t stand them”.
I give to 3 charities but the lovely ladies bit just riled me for some reason.

Whotoldyouthat · 12/08/2024 18:36

It’s the charity bag packers offering to pack your bags at the end of the tills I hate too. I like to pack my own shopping and it kind of feels forced upon when they are there. If I have change I will usually put some coins in the bucket but I don’t always carry money and then feel guilty about it!

I’ve never heard of the term chugger before. Is this the type of person that chases you to sign up to regular charity donations or just anyone collecting money in a tin/ bucket? I will donate to the ones that don’t hassle me if I do have change.

Yes one of the useful things coming from lockdown if you get someone at the door, annoying call "sorry I'm in the middle of teams meeting." As I return to slump in front of the telly.

IF they are outside, on the pavement, not co ops responsibility.
I hate it too OP, there is a (lovely) young man outside my Aldi I feel.guilty about every day, my other supermarkets nearby are Tesco and Asda - both regularly have charity people using emotive language i.e. " do you love animals?"
I bloody hate it - and they have been given permission 😔

Edited

I once got a chugger at the door at 9pm collecting for some children's charity or other.

I was in a bad mood to start with and told her I wasn't interested only for her to ask "but don't you care about children being abused and killed?"

Well obviously I do but I was so incensed I said "Not really, any reason I should" and shut the door. They probably marked me down as some kind of sociopath but they never came back!

Sam0207 · 12/08/2024 18:37

We have hordes of them in our pedestrianised town centre.

One young man takes great delight in standing in front of my mobility scooter and when I say a polite no thanks starts to "dance" around me - as in are you going this way or that way.

Saw him earlier and sped up towards him till he jumped out of the way.

tobee · 12/08/2024 18:39

It especially annoys me when you know that they chug for any charity going, not people who volunteer specifically for a cause they give any hoots about. Angry

feathermucker · 12/08/2024 18:39

I hate this with a passion. I don't want to engage so I walk straight past them. That's if they haven't stepped right in front of me first. Without fail, there's a smart ass comment or a sarcastic wish to have a good day.

Chugger = charity mugger

I would mean a person paid to recruit donations, generally direct debit. Not can rattlers/bag packers who are volunteers

Just say - no I hate animals

ruffler45 · 12/08/2024 18:40

You do know that a lot of these people are "collecting" on a fee/commission basis, so they can be annoyingly persistent with the hard sell..

Darkfire · 12/08/2024 18:40

I had this at ASDA a few weeks ago, electricity company just outside the door and animal charity just inside - so irritating

MeridianB · 12/08/2024 18:40

Chuggers seemed to disappear for a while but now they are back.

And don’t get me started on the awful ‘donate £1 to charity?’ options on card machines in some shops and service stations. Not even naming the alleged ‘charity’.
