Stolen Bottle of Champagne

A bottle of champagne, worth about £70, has been stolen from the office.

Our manager said that if it's not replaced then the four staff members will need to pay for it between us.

I've got an idea who may have taken it but I can't be 100% sure.

I'm simply not prepared to pay for it. Why should I? Everyone else thinks we should!

Apparently I may get a written warning for not contributing (whilst that thief walks free)!!!

If someone has stolen a bottle of champagne then I would call his bluff and suggest he calls the police.

Chances are he stole it himself and is wanting to scam another bottle out of you all!

I don’t know why some people are saying you’ll get a nice payout from an unfair/constructive dismissal case. They are lengthy to prove, need to get great legal advice ( ACAS is only the start) and the payouts are not usually that great and depends on what you have earnt, scale of the “injustice’ etc. So don’t let that be a factor in deciding what to do

Thanks.

I've no interest whatsoever in going down that route!

I'll happily tell them where to stick the job and just walk.

Sounds like it might be the boss himself and he's trying to cover his tracks!

Has the boss mentioned it since? Wondering if it was just an empty threat or if he actually thinks he can get away with threatening you all like this

Any update OP?

If you've got nothing to lose surely it would be better to stick around, make things better for everyone and fight for those that are stuck. Make sure that nobody gets charged for the champagne. If you walk out, you'll just get blamed as the thief anyway.

As I've said, I've thought of walking out before.

I'm not going to carry on working in a job I don't want/need, with a bully boy, for the sake of others.

I really couldn't care less whether he thinks I'm guilty or not.

As long as you will not be owed any wages or holiday pay why not?

DD’s uni tried the same thing years ago with taps and other plumbing items being removed. She was home at the time and I had her boarding pass. The halls management emailed all the students to say they will bear the cost of replacement. Having been broken into months before and knowing who it was, but police unable to charge the offenders, I pointed this out to hall management their plan to charge all students was incorrect and as ours was home, I would take the matter further if they did.

eventually they located the tapware etc. someone knew and put the person in (which is what the threat of payment was designed to do). However it’s important to ensure organisations etc do not bully people just as much as we shouldn’t allow children to do it either.
