Rats in eurocamp mobile

Help, I'm freaking out. We are staying in a eurocamp mobile home, campsite in Holland. Eurocamp has accommodation on site, but another company run the site, which is brilliant. We're on day 3. This afternoon and evening we have had a rat coming into the cupboard. When we saw the signs first (bread eaten in cupboard) we went to the eurocamp reception. We were told, tough sh*t that's camping, and that the campsite is full, they can't move us. They put in a plug in noise thing and left us to it. He has since been back, full on gnawing and clattering about in/around the same kitchen cupboard (which has been emptied out), mm from my 6 year olds sleeping head. I'm on high alert, staying in the kids room, I know I won't sleep a wink waiting for him to return. I can't stay here tomorrow. The kids will be devastated if we have to go home tomorrow, they've been absolutely loving it and have so many plans for the next week. What can we realistically do if they won't move us and we can't stay here? We don't have money to stay somewhere else and hope for eventual (probably unlikely) reimbursement.

I have stayed with Eurocamp many a time and done several seasons (a good few years ago now) as a "campsite courier" (on site rep) in my late teens. I have never experienced this on either side and would be mortified and completely unable to relax.

Sounds like the staff onsite were very unhelpful. I assume protocol is still similar: you could ask to speak to their area manager, ask for their maintenance staff to visit or contact head office in the UK.

No one needs this stress on holiday! Whilst they may be fully booked I would argue this is a problem they need to solve for you as it could potentially be a health and safety issue!

I spoke too soon, we can't find a hotel. Eurocamp are not helping, just leaving us to sort it. What a waste of holiday days

Will they move you to another Eurocamp? We would recommend TerSpegelt if that’s an option.

@bec81 where are you looking for hotels? There are definitely ones closer to Duinrell than an hour away. Did you ask Eurocamp to find one?

Fucketbucket · 10/08/2024 14:26

What a nightmare OP.
There are hotels coming up on booking.com for leiden and the Hague. Failing that you should find something in Amsterdam, loads for the kids to do there too and easy to get to on the train.

Nothing at such last minute unfortunately

I'm seeing things close by on TripAdvisor. Check Wassenaar.

Ah what shit for you OP! I would go full on nuclear and threaten to sue etc, surely they can't just absolve themselves of responsibility?? Also - all suggestions of duct tape/poison/steel wool etc are clearly insane

Sorry I can't help with hotels or anything, though I am absolutely horrified on your behalf (!) but just wanted to say, if you DO find somewhere to move for the 2 days: don't empty the fridge, don't even move all your stuff, just move the essentials (and anything vulnerable to rats I guess Confused) and TELL them you are leaving stuff in the old cabin and will move it to the new cabin on Monday. So much easier for you to pack a small bag with 2 days worth of stuff for the hotel - and no reason to lose your fridge stuff either. Put anything like cereal, bread, biscuits etc that the rat could get into in the fridge too for now.

How are you doing OP?

bec81 · 11/08/2024 09:56

There were absolutely no hotels to be found last night, we had hoteliers in 3 different cities ringing around looking for a room for us. And nowhere on site either. Which I find amazing, like what would be done if there was a fire or gas leak in one of them. We spent way too much of our holiday on the phone between being on hold with eurocamp and calling around hotels, we've decided we're just going to have to stay until tomorrow when we move to a new area of the site and spend as little time as possible here in the mobile. Absolute disaster but we're not going to let it ruin the kids holiday, or our own
