Rats in eurocamp mobile

Help, I'm freaking out. We are staying in a eurocamp mobile home, campsite in Holland. Eurocamp has accommodation on site, but another company run the site, which is brilliant. We're on day 3. This afternoon and evening we have had a rat coming into the cupboard. When we saw the signs first (bread eaten in cupboard) we went to the eurocamp reception. We were told, tough sh*t that's camping, and that the campsite is full, they can't move us. They put in a plug in noise thing and left us to it. He has since been back, full on gnawing and clattering about in/around the same kitchen cupboard (which has been emptied out), mm from my 6 year olds sleeping head. I'm on high alert, staying in the kids room, I know I won't sleep a wink waiting for him to return. I can't stay here tomorrow. The kids will be devastated if we have to go home tomorrow, they've been absolutely loving it and have so many plans for the next week. What can we realistically do if they won't move us and we can't stay here? We don't have money to stay somewhere else and hope for eventual (probably unlikely) reimbursement.

Is it Duinrell? I saw someone else complaining about rats this week.

SunshinyDay1 · 10/08/2024 10:35

Lazy arsed reception is just about right. Most sites have handy men on site.

bec81 · 10/08/2024 10:26

I haven't a notion of doing that. Didn't even bring a car.

No criticism of you @bec81 just sympathy. It would be my worst nightmare.

bec81 · 10/08/2024 10:35

Yes, it's duinrell.
The manager onsite offered us alternative accomodation from Monday. My husband is on the phone with eurocamp Ireland now. I've taken the kids to the pool

I thght so even the main site isn't great with customer service when I was there a lady had a really nasty accident in the pool and they doesn't care.
Op look at efteling and see if you can afford to go there for a couple of nights, there are v good cheap hotels 10 mins walk form it also
It's all far superior to durinell.

Hilarious that some people think OP should get in her car and find the nearest hardware store to stock up on wire wool, gaffer tape, rat traps, poison and hard plastic food containers.

Then spend her days decanting food, sealing up a hole and putting poison down in a small space with children and food around. Happy holidays!

Doesn’t matter if its a rat or a hedgehog, something is getting in, making a noise and eating food. This is a caravan, not a canvas tent on the ground.

Of course you go back to that lazy arse on reception and demand some action, take photos, email higher up, put it all over Trip Advisor, make a big fuss.

Don’t attempt any DIY pest control, this is terrible customer service - do not accept this treatment.

I’ve worked in retail and the louder people shout the quicker they get dealt with.

Exactly!

OP
should solve Eurocamps issue?

I don't think so!

FoodieToo · 10/08/2024 10:43

Oh you poor thing !! We are huge Duinrell fans , have been many times ! We are also from Ireland .
I would not be able to stay one second with a rat . I am TERRIFIED !!

Could you move into Amsterdam and even stay in a youth hostel or similar the next two nights ?
If you return to Duinrell , I recommend the Premium Duingalows . We used Eurocamp the first few times till we discovered the Duingalows .

WittyFatball · 10/08/2024 11:02

Make a huge fuss.

I had a different issue with a eurocamp mobile a few years ago (drains not working) and had a full refund for the accommodation.

peebles32 · 10/08/2024 11:24

I used to work for Eurocamo years ago and all the staff are students getting pissed. 👀 if they could not find me alternative accommodation then I would want putting up I. A hotel for a couple of nights. You are on holiday!!!! Should be having the time of your life.

SunshinyDay1 · 10/08/2024 11:34

@dayswithaY it's classic mumsnet

AuntieDolly · 10/08/2024 11:46

Surely they have a maintenance team onsite who could sort this until you move on Monday?

CatStoleMyChocolate · 10/08/2024 11:59

There is plenty of rat-free accommodation available at Duinrell, we stayed in one (a Comfort mobile on Middenveld, if that helps…). They need to move you. There is clearly a problem with rats in a particular part of the site and they need to grip it!

fiorentina · 10/08/2024 12:09

When we had issues on a eurocamp holiday we contacted head office for help when the site staff couldn’t resolve it.

Can you buy a sonic rat repeller from the hypermarket?

bec81 · 10/08/2024 12:16

They are putting us up in a hotel, if we can find one, for the next 2 nights. More expense of taxis, eating out, throwing out food in our fridge etc, missing out on 2 days on site with the kids. And then they'll move us on Monday. Not ideal but better than going home.

They need to compensate you for all the extras. You should not be out of pocket.

But hope it goes well.

NCfor24 · 10/08/2024 12:23

@bec81 keep all your receipts etc and make sure you claim it back from them.
Hope the rest of the holiday goes well for you all

bec81 · 10/08/2024 12:27

Thanks yes, we had done a big shop a few days ago, didn't think to keep receipts though so they say without receipts we won't be compensated. We were given a budget for the hotel, we have found something in a nearby city just within that price range, it will be expensive to eat there, but we will have to as we won't be able to cook in the hotel

Pleased you are sorted OP. If you have not moved out yet, maybe they can offer a fridge to store your food.

ls there a market or supermarket nearby where you can get dome cold things for dinners?

l know it’s all a pain in the bum, but see it as a little adventure, enjoy the hotel and exploring the “new” town.

bec81 · 10/08/2024 12:41

We will definitely make it an adventure for the kids. They are giving out about having to leave their new friends and miss out on some of the activities, which can only be a great sign that they are having a fab holiday. And we'll have a full week without the housemates when we return

Is the hotel too far away to return to the site during the day? You are technically still resident there.

Yea, it's an hour each way in the bus and or €80- 90 return in a cab

It might not even be a rat, mice are loud! I'd assume mouse unless I saw a rat.

Happened to us in a cottage in Wales could hear them through out the night and droppings in kitchen. We were super clean when preparing food and told the owner. Now we won't stay there again but we didn't leave because of it.

Can you get hold of mousetraps or anything? Or try and block the entry?

Delphiniumandlupins · 10/08/2024 13:20

Can you leave stuff in the fridge to be moved to the new van on Monday? Anything that will go off you could offer to neighbours. Will you have a fridge at the hotel (for food that doesn't need cooking)?

NotMyCircus123 · 10/08/2024 13:21

I have stayed with Eurocamp many a time and done several seasons (a good few years ago now) as a "campsite courier" (on site rep) in my late teens. I have never experienced this on either side and would be mortified and completely unable to relax.

Sounds like the staff onsite were very unhelpful. I assume protocol is still similar: you could ask to speak to their area manager, ask for their maintenance staff to visit or contact head office in the UK.

No one needs this stress on holiday! Whilst they may be fully booked I would argue this is a problem they need to solve for you as it could potentially be a health and safety issue!

It's not a mouse
