AIBU to think we can renovate the whole house with £11k

Just that really,

We want to -
Paint walls
Laminate flooring in 5 rooms and hall way
New full bathroom and new tiles
New internal doors and radiators
Carpet on the stairs

AIBU to think we can do that for all £11k
We are doing the work ourselves, with the help of my FIL.

We get 20% off b&q so this will really help. It's literally just the materials we need to buy. M

Dont skimp on taps or shower.

Kitkat1523 · 09/08/2024 21:36

Yes….as long as you diy….and go use cheap materials…..depends how cheap you prepared to go though

Superhansrantowindsor · 09/08/2024 21:36

Very doable if you have free labour.

Or how soon you want to redo it all again 😬

You'd be surprised I calculated the flooring at 2k alone

If you getting cheap laminate you will be fine…..if you want LVT eg amtico …then your budget won’t stretch….personally I would rather go at least mid quality and do a few room then save and do a more

loopyluloopy · 09/08/2024 21:31

This, yes the whole house is filled with wallpaper even the ceilings 😭😭

Yeah this is often the problem and you’ll generally find (at least in older houses) that the walls are not in great shape underneath and need skimming. Have you factored that in? I was very surprised how much skimming walls costs professionally, but obviously if you’re able to do it yourself then awesome.

Londonrach1 · 09/08/2024 21:48

Having just done our house...mostly diy I'm not sure. Material costs are sky high at the moment. If you do it yourself possibly...suggest diy kitchens but you need to measure and remeasure as any mistakes are yours. You be shocked how much extra work you need to do without realizing cost. You need to do labour yourself and be a small house and nothing to shock you...our boiler failed and no hot water and that was 3k before we started...

endofthecorridoor · 09/08/2024 21:48

May e you will do it but it will look basic and probably need doing again. However if you don't mind second had furniture etc then I would take time and do it when you can afford to do it properly. We just did a 3/4 bed bungalow with a new roof for 100k no bathrooms or kitchen just roof fireplace skimming and decorating

ILikeItWhatIsIt · 09/08/2024 21:54

Obviously depends massively what spec & how big your house is, but conservatively:

Paint walls £500
Laminate flooring in 5 rooms and hall way £3000
New full bathroom and new tiles £3000
New internal doors £2000 and radiators £1000
Carpet on the stairs £500

GuineaPotato · 09/08/2024 21:58

you mention that you get discount at B&Q, do you work for the kingfisher group? You might get discount at screwfix too, which tends to be cheaper than B&Q for fixtures/fittings

Artichokepiglet · 09/08/2024 22:08

Yes, if it's just what you've listed I think that's very doable.

Agree with these costs but would be cheap and cheerful

dimsumfatsum · 09/08/2024 22:10

We've recently had some of the jobs on your list done:

Wooden flooring for one room- £1200
Bathroom- £8000 (£1400 for the goods in the B&Q sale, the rest labour)
Painting the downstairs (2 reception rooms, kitchen, hallway, stairs and landing) £2800
We didn't replace any doors but our radiators for the whole house cost £1800

We live in the SE where costs for trades are through the roof.

We've been quoted £3000 for carpet on the stairs and three rooms upstairs from carpet rite.

dimsumfatsum · 09/08/2024 22:12

Ps. We're in a small mid-terrace.

Go to your independent high street carpet shop….always better value I’ve found

That’s very expensive laminate. I’ve just purchased 76m2 of 14mm engineered oak (2.5mm oak) for £2100 with the underlay.

Wimberry · 09/08/2024 22:18

How old is your house? I think you need to go room by room and see what's under the wall paper or current flooring before you make any decisions to be honest. We had our bathroom done and although we were prepared for it (having done other rooms first) the textured wall paper was pretty much the only thing holding the plaster up! We had to take it back to brick. We didn't have expensive fittings, but still the cost for our bathroom was more than your budget (obviously including labour costs which are significant, but building materials in general are much higher than they used to be)

Frowningprovidence · 09/08/2024 22:20

I think things like polyfiller, tape, sand paper and mastic come to a surprising amount.

that sounds about right for LVT …..which imo is better option than engineered wood

ODFOx · 09/08/2024 22:24

If it is purely cosmetic and you aren't moving wiring or pipe work then yes.
You might be tight depending on how fancy your new bathroom is but it is definitely doable.

teatimeplease · 09/08/2024 22:26

What type of wallpaper is it? We've just ripped a load of woodchip off and the walls have had to go back to brick 🥴

I agree with this- I was amazed at how often I dropped £80 at Toolstation just for bits and bobs.
I think the budget is quite ambitious. Agree with PP I'd leave the doors until last.

brightonrock123456789 · 09/08/2024 22:30

Do you definitely need new doors? Can you sand and paint existing ones ?

We are doing this with the upstairs doors and just changing the handles but wanted nice doors downstairs - I will leave them till last

@Isitovernow123

I didn't want to go too cheap on the flooring, we want something that will last I guess
