St Ives itself is beautiful but there are also some other places you can visit which aren't too far away. I would definitely recommend Kynance Cove and the Minack Theatre (we didn't see a show-just did the tour and had lunch in the cafe which has amazing views)

I think I would avoid the school holidays though, it's heaving at the moment!

Hillarious · 09/08/2024 15:51

It's easy to get there on a bike from Cambridge. About 12 miles along the guided busway.

@LakelandDreams We need to stop monopolising this thread. But I would say that there are some nice walks around St Ives, a Tom's Cakes, a Waitrose and some great charity shops to mooch around.

And not far from Grafham Water.

I'll get my coat...

I love St Ives. Know it quite well.

I second the Tate St Ives

Barbara Hepworth Museum

eat at Ugly Butterfly

a short trip away is St Michaels Mount.

parking is dreadful in the town though.

tedgran · 09/08/2024 16:40

If you go to see a play at the Minack in the evening, take a jumper. DH sat next to a woman in shorts and vest top, sun went down and she started turning blue! Also take a cushion, the seats are stone.

JumpingAtShadows1 · 13/08/2024 11:08

Thank you all

Has anyone been to St Michaels Mount? Is it walkable along the causeway? I have a disability that means im slow and cant walk miles - but its hard to judge how long that walk is lol

You can walk across at low tide. It's not far but cobbled. You can time it so you can get the boat each way, which is my preference.

However, the path up to the castle itself is uneven and very steep. There are deep stone 'steps' to navigate. I find it a bit of a challenge and I'm completely able-bodied but a bit unfit.

TheFlis · 13/08/2024 11:18

If you like seafood and fancy splashing out, One Fish Street is absolutely incredible. It’s tiny and a set tasting menu so you need to book in advance, but honestly one of the best meals I have ever had.

So did I.. then again, it is my hometown😆

HarrietSchulenberg · 13/08/2024 11:38

Beware of the crowds. I was literally lifted off my feet by the crowd walking into town from the car park we used. I am not a petite woman by any stretch of the imagination but I was literally swept up and carried along for a few yards. I've never seen anything like it outside of gigs but I guess the volume of visitors coupled with the "quaint" narrow streets were a heady combination.
That was a weekday in August about 5 years or so ago.

It’s not too far, but can be uneven under foot. I had a foot injury and found the steps out of the boat/harbour harder. The grounds and base are beautiful so no need scramble up to the mount itself - having climbed it on another visit I wonder how the elderly inhabitants get in and out.

Yellow Canary cafe in St Ives is a must.

There is a boat you can take if you can’t walk it.

Hah. I was working in St Ives (jam before cream, surf dude, arty one) for a while and signed up for a workshop for parents of autistic children, as it looked really good and there were none in the area we live. Called the woman on the day as I couldn't find the address anywhere. Turned out to be in your St Ives. Although it was only supposed to be for locals, she felt sorry for me and let me join on Zoom. It was a really helpful session. I didn't know your St Ives existed until that mistake and have always thought really fondly of it because of that lovely woman and her useful advice.

I had a similar experience. Never seen crowds like it; it really ruined my visit.

I liked Carbis Bay (great restaurant on the beach) and loved St Michael’s Mount. Agree with the recommendation of Kynance Cove, but go early to avoid the crowds. I had it pretty much to myself - at 6am.

Filled with pickpockets. And by pickpockets I mean seaguls. And ny pickpocketing I mean a seagul stole my ice cream in St Ives.

@Meadowwild:That's the most lovely post I think I've seen on Mumsnet!

Peoniesinbloom · 13/08/2024 13:54

Id advise you to book restaurants ahead of time, it gets incredibly busy!

OptimismvsRealism · 13/08/2024 13:56
