'Sneaking' two extra children into hotel room booked for two adults and two children

AIBU in thinking this may have implications regarding insurance etc?

Friend is off on holiday later today to a large hotel abroad with her DH and four DC aged between 4 and 16. Not a package, no meals included and flights were booked separately.

The room has a small bedroom, bathroom and living area with a sofa bed. It sleeps 4. They've booked it for two adults and two children. That's the maximum number of people allowed.

She wants to check in with DH, their two youngest boys and all their luggage, and have the two oldest boys wait outside until they're 'sneaked' in a little while later.

I think that whilst this is logistically possible, it will have implications but not sure what these implications might be. Friend thinks there's no problem with this and nobody will bat an eyelid.

AIBU in saying it's not a good idea?

If they get caught and thrown out of the hotel, they have to own it. They can't leave a bad review of the hotel online along the lines of "the staff threw our whole family out onto the street, they frog-marched us out in front of the other guests, it was so humiliating, they won't give us our money back for the days we've missed, the kids are devastated, what a horrible thing to do to innocent children, we had to search for ages for another hotel that had space for us, a last-minute room cost a fortune, we've all been looking forward to this holiday for so long and now it's been ruined". They'll have to accept that they ruined their own holiday, and that the staff were well within their rights to throw them out.

I think it's immoral to evade policies in this manner.

Establishments are entitled to set their own rules; people who don't like it need not patronize them. It's effectively stealing.

RollaCola84 · 09/08/2024 15:48

@cannellonies @CoffeeGood Yep, everywhere I've ever stayed in a hotel I've had to give my passport for the police registration, I've also had a form left to be collected by Villa rental companies to do it. I also know there's a link to register personal house guests in Spain because I have friends whose parents live in Spain and have to do it whenever they have family and friends to say.

I'd be far more worried about potential trouble and fines for this than anything.

ApplesOrangesBananas · 09/08/2024 15:49

If they get found out which I’m sure at some point they will do, they’ll be kicked out. A lot of hotels let children under a certain age stay for free and provide roll out beds etc.

Some Hotels like Disney actually do checks for room occupancy. I think it depends on the country. I don’t understand why you would want the stress of sneaking children in and maybe getting caught on holiday tbh. Don’t you go on holiday to relax and come back refreshed?

There are issues with drought in parts of Spain, so if they are showering, washing hands, even flushing the toilet, they are using a resource that is not freely available.
I am in the "one night one extra person in a travelodge" section of society (not done it personally but can see why people do) but not a whole holiday!

Fucking daftest thing I've read on here.

If two extra children are going to throw a while region into drought, there should be a state of emergency and close the full hotel.

Go and wise up.

So the hotel aren't losing out financially.

Yes, they are! OP said: They're not particularly short of money. It was a last minute booking. When they tried to book for 4 children, the site defaulted to two separate rooms, but she changed the settings to two children to get just the one room.

This woman should be paying for two rooms, and can afford to.

Agree.

And people who can't afford to, should stay home. Those are the breaks when one chooses to have more children than one can afford to take on holiday.

maddiemookins16mum · 09/08/2024 15:54

I can guarantee 100% they'll get found out. Not least by the cleaner who only needs to look at her rooming chart to see how many people are in the room and will clock fairly early on that there are more 'bodies' per se. I get it's expensive, I really do but sneaking your wains in is not the answer.

Do you live in Spain?

It is not a stupid thing to say at all.

its not daft at all.
In Spain the water supply is currently severely limited for locals and paid for at a premium by the hospitality industry.
Bringing in two nonpaying guests to use hotel facilities is morally wrong on the basis of cumulative effect, the same as say, littering or picking wild flowers. .
Using a hotel's facilities for free, including water, is not just theft, it's theft of a finite and scarce resource which even local people have to ration in hotter months.
It's absolutely not daft to think about a bigger picture than what you can get for kicks for free.

1stTimeMummy2021 · 09/08/2024 16:09

@AlbertCamel My parents did this my entire childhood and although we never got caught I absolutely hated it, it caused so much anxiety. Worrying about being kicked out is not a fun way to spend a holiday in my opinion.

And if they were the ONLY people doing it, so two extra people in the whole of Spain, then perhaps you might be justified in your dismissive vitriol, but it would seem that it's a common thing. Have you seen the drought in parts of Spain at the moment? In some areas (I have 2 lots of family out there) you can't fill your private villa pool so Airbnb's are in all sorts of problems with people having booked a place with a pool and finding it's not available and if you go over your quota of water you get charged a MASSIVE amount. Some hotels are hanging on by a thread, due to COL, their expenses and controls, and some hotels ARE on the verge of closing anyway and just a few families thinking it's no big deal, like you do, and thinking the rules don't apply to them, literally could close the hotel.

Go and wise up yourself!

It’s stealing, and I wouldn’t believe that they won’t be taking food for all the children, at least for breakfast.

It’s no wonder so many Europeans who live in tourist areas are sick of British tourists.

Yeah they do, in Florida. Peple try to sneak extra kids in and sleep cramped on the floor.

@mrsdineen2 couldn’t care less about any of that. It’s far easier to just think of yourself and tell them to wise up. Batshit crazy and entitled.

I have.

DelphiniumBlue · 09/08/2024 16:28

I’d be wondering where the bigger ones are actually going to sleep? Even if they put a couple of kids on lilos, will there be enough floor space to do that? Maybe smallest one can go in with mum and dad?
I’ve stayed in places where there definitely wouldn’t be enough room to fit an extra 2, not enough floor space, or seats, or cups.

Presumably they can take a couple of sheets from home along with their blow up beds?

Possibly, but seems such a faff to pack 2 bottom sheets and 2 top sheets with no spares, along with lilos - may as well go camping and not rip off the hotel or expect your children to spend 10 uncomfortable (even sweaty) nights in the same bedding you`ve lugged from home.

BlackStrayCat · 09/08/2024 16:31

Do people think people in Spanish hotels in high season with police breathing down their neck are thick?

"Oh, its just Spain"

Do they not realise that it is the biggest and easiest scam to spot? That British people have an horrendous reputation here already?

BreadInCaptivity · 09/08/2024 16:34

If they want to risk it I suppose it's up to them.

Doesn't sound like a great plan to me though, spending the holiday sneaking around, being squashed into
