To just want plastic straws back!

Lighthearted - mostly!

I’m so sick of paper straws turning to mush before a drink is even finished, they just aren’t fit for purpose. Add in the awful wooden cutlery that you now get (I want my salad to actually taste like salad, not wood!!) and the cardboard takeaway containers which begin to disintegrate as soon as they touch food and all of a sudden I’m reconsidering whether the planet is really worth saving…

I’m joking of course but surely I’m not the only one who feels this way? There have to be better alternatives out there than paper, wood & cardboard that just seem to ruin everything!

When purchasing an often pricey takeaway smoothie/coffee etc I really do not believe that having a decent straw provided to drink it with should be a big ask..

Yes, I can bring my own but it’s inconvenient.

The planet can't go to fuck because it inconveniences you to make a minor adjustment to your life to make it bearable. Just carry the bloody cutlery. The planet doesn't care that you feel entitled to a free straw.

You do realise that plastic drinking straws are absolutely irrelevant in the planet's production of plastic waste? For starters, there's more plastic in the plastic lids that they put on the cups than the bloody straws ever had.

It was purely a symbolic thing that some environmentalist celebs cooked up to make them feel warm and fuzzy inside.

It is about the straws but its also about the social messaging and government messaging to businesses that we are to be seen to move away from single use.

Since the straw ban, how many more places are using biodegradable food packaging?

saltinesandcoffeecups · 08/08/2024 23:46

All of you saying that banning straws is saving the planet, please report back with the actual data drive difference it has made.

Or wait don’t… I don’t want to lose a stream of profit in my retirement plan.

The fact that you really think banning straws is going to be a big factor in saving the planet is hilarious - go look at the multinational corporations who cause the vast majority of all pollution on the planet and report back to me.

It has always baffled me that so many of them actively choose to eat off paper plates. Horrible things!

A lot of Americans are very, very germophobic (if that's a word - I got it from Donald Trump).

In many American suburban homes, everyone has their after-brushing-teeth rinse of water from a Dixie-brand disposable paper cup. Some families get through thousands of them in a year.

Oldfatandfrumpy · 08/08/2024 23:52

We went to a hotel that had straws made out of the white candy they used to make 'candy cigarettes'from (the white sticks, not the paper wrapped chocolate ones)

I thought that was a fab idea, they didn't go soft (although a little slimy if you left them in too long) and you got a sweet treat too. Of course you couldn't have too many...

Greydogs123 · 08/08/2024 23:52

If you hate plastic straws so much then 1. buy a metal straw and carry it with you 2. Don’t bother with a straw at all.

Onthetipofmytonguetoo · 08/08/2024 23:54

We went to a pub a while back and the straws were made of…straw! Genius! They were thin so ideal for coke/ lemonade etc. would be less good for thicker drinks. We were in south of France recently and had compostable straws that felt just like plastic. Loved them.

It's not pollution if people like you buy and use it and stoke demand.

Big Corps sell what people buy.

I vote with my cash, you can vote with yours.

It’s crap. I used to go to a cafe in a nearby town, usually had a milkshake. Served in one of those glass jam jar things, with a plastic straw. Now served with a paper straw in a plastic cup with a plastic domed lid. So obviously using more plastic than one straw does.

Also been to the US recently, most diner type places served food on paper plates with plastic cutlery. In Hong Kong, we got fresh bathroom stuff every day (tooth brush/glasses/comb) all wrapped in plastic. I went to one shop where they wrapped each individual item in plastic.

BertieBotts · 08/08/2024 23:57

Can't stand the reusable ones, they never seem to feel clean no matter how you clean them.

Someone did explain to me that straws were chosen as one of the things to ban because there was a known reasonable alternative. But I do find it extremely annoying when the paper straws aren't fit for purpose. Capri Sun are impossible to pierce now as well.

I do buy paper ones and just use 3 instead of one as they go soggy/get chewed (by my 2yo) but DH has been known to buy reusable plastic ones for the kids and then chuck them away when they get too manky D: Surely this is worse??

Do you guys have the ones made from agave? They were weird until I figured out what the were made from. But they are the only non-plastic straw I will use.

Hand on heart they aren’t bad to use.

Certain plastic including straws seriously harms marine life, so it's not hilarious. I could suggest you go and spend some time in marine rescue and conservation. Report back to us how hilarious it is that people don't use things like straws.

Sarahzb · 09/08/2024 01:00

Drink from the glass if you're that bothered

JoalGk · 09/08/2024 01:07

Drinking straws = bad
Unboxing plastic shite online [miniverse]= good

It’s a confusing world for those age 40+ 🤣

I've had bamboo straws as well. They're not perfect but much better than paper. I think companies are doing well to come up with some new alternatives other than soggy paper.

When I went to Italy in the 1960s the drinking straws were made of straw.

Theres not one drink out there that has to be drank using a straw. You can just remove the lid and drink directly from the cup. Or carry your own alternative type of straw around with you. I’m glad our government is taking steps to reduce our plastic use.

There is when you have an autoimmune condition which creates sores all over your gums & tongue 365 days a year. What an ignorant comment

And statistically how many people would this apply to and why could you not then bring your own straw? Hmm

Plasmodesmata · 08/08/2024 23:24

Why,though, are the paper straws on the outside of small drinks cartons packaged in little clear plastic packets?

It's the design of plastic straws that are harmful to wildlife (although obviously plastic isn't great in any situation). Same with ring tags that hold cans, they're dangerous.

TheTigerWhoCameToEatMyArsehole · 09/08/2024 02:11

Anyone tried to eat McDonald's pancakes with their paper cutlery 😂
