To just want plastic straws back!

Lighthearted - mostly!

I’m so sick of paper straws turning to mush before a drink is even finished, they just aren’t fit for purpose. Add in the awful wooden cutlery that you now get (I want my salad to actually taste like salad, not wood!!) and the cardboard takeaway containers which begin to disintegrate as soon as they touch food and all of a sudden I’m reconsidering whether the planet is really worth saving…

I’m joking of course but surely I’m not the only one who feels this way? There have to be better alternatives out there than paper, wood & cardboard that just seem to ruin everything!

My biggest bug bear is those pressed paper cutlery. Even with a salad (McDonalds) they do not work

MrsPinkFlower · 08/08/2024 22:01

The majority of people using straws aren’t doing it because they’re disabled. As I said, if you have a need for a straw then understandably you’d carry them around with you instead of using paper straws. Most people who use paper straws do it because they’re readily available from whoever is selling your drink. If they didn’t supply a straw, most people would just drink from the cup.

I have sane menopausal friends telling me that the attached bottle tops are tipping them completely over the edge😁

I’m slowly getting used to them, but yes - very annoying. Those bloody lids have been the cause of many drink in bag spillages..

In Yugoslavia as a kid on holiday {years ago} the straws were actually STRAW.
They were wonderful.
Don't know why they can't make them nowadays.

They do!

Those wheat straws are a menace for anyone with coeliac diease. I've been very nearly glutened by one as didn't realise it was made from wheat. Bubbology use them and you have to ask for a paper alternative, which is fine if you remember to do so! They don't even have a sign warning you of the wheat straws.

I honestly don't understand why any adult (without specific special needs) needs a straw at all?

Straws are something I have never bought at home and I raised two children to adulthood without missing them.

Bubble tea? That is one drink that needs to be experienced via a straw.

Very hard to drink from a cup when out and about without a lid - a straw is necessary. Some places have now started giving out sip lids which are very handy and remove the need for a straw

I treated myself to a maccies milkshake last week, it was boiling hot and I'd just spent an hour at the dentist. Driving home, within minutes the paper straw disintegrated and no amount of sucking got any milkshake through it. I took the lid off and tried to have a sip, the whole lot (proper thick milkshake for once) lumped out if the cup onto my face. I looked like I'd had an interesting encounter with a moomin. Had to pull over and clean myself up, I now keep a metal straw in the glovebox!

StupendousConfectionary · 08/08/2024 22:05

It’s probably already been said, but along with plastic straws can we also bring back plastic bottle lids that fully come off.

And they are norm around the EU :(
I just rip them off now and drink without being smashed with a lid.

Guessing you don’t drink McDonald’s milkshakes (banana ones were my pregnancy craving then it’s all I could face when I had covid with a very high temp on my 40th birthday). They only work for the first third of the drink.

oh and bubble tea. I also prefer iced coffee with one. Doesn’t need much imagination to understand.

I have to admit that your misfortune has given me a good giggle 🤣🤣

Whilst we’re moaning about progress to save the planet which is very good but also very annoying….

Changing the milk bottle screw cap lids to clear instead of blue, green or red 😡.

Countless times now I’ve put full fat milk in my morning tea 🤮

I find this thread really depressing. It's every single one of us making the change that counts. Every decision we make individually counts.
I find depressing how very few people can see the link to the horrible summers and winters we have. How this affects crops, the mass migration of people from hot countries that stop growing enough food. How food will become more and more expensive as the land dries out. Global warming will only stop if we bother to understand that what we do matters.
It maters to drink take away coffee in a stupid plastic cup that lasts 5 minutes.
It matters using plstic straws. It matters the lids that ended up in the ocean and becoming microplastics.
Private jets and commercial flights will be taxed heavily very soon.
Europe is leading but I am afraid reading the amount of stupidity it's too little too late.
It's really really depressing. We are doomed as human race.

What’s more alarming is the level of stupidity in thinking that banning plastic straws and utensils is actually going to make a difference.

Theres not one drink out there that has to be drank using a straw. You can just remove the lid and drink directly from the cup. Or carry your own alternative type of straw around with you. I’m glad our government is taking steps to reduce our plastic use.

Oh the privilege of not having a disability that doesn't mean you need a straw.

julydecembermay · 08/08/2024 22:15

not read full thread but to chime in I was reading that most of the paper straws have forever chemicals when tested. not sure what's worse - ingesting those or unenvironmentally friendly plastic! FFS manufacturers!

FinallyPregnant23 · 08/08/2024 22:22

Don’t you find the metal ones hurt your mouth by the end of the drink though? You have to suck too hard to use them. I miss plastic ones!

Metal straws are your friend

I was put off by the person that was sadly killed by a metal straw, I know the odds are very small but it stayed with me.

Lots of other countries still have proper straws.

Yanbu. I despise them. I thought oh I will get used to this maybe. No years later and I despise them even more. Gives me the complete rage!

I have plastic straws, bought them in another country on holiday. Maybe I should start selling them lol

Best impulse buy ever was when DH bought metal reuseable straws. Far superior to all other options. But I see you have them. I think it's just a case of carrying reusable ones with you at all times.

I have a metal one and carry it around.

(Invisiline means drinking from straws if out and not as thing to take brace out)

I am not good at remembering to remove it at end of drink. So I'll also need some form of bracelet to attach me to the straw!

Zanina · 08/08/2024 22:30

I carry reusable straws as I have two young children to cater to

jokish · 08/08/2024 22:32

The bamboo straws by cheeky bamboo are really decent
