To just want plastic straws back!

Malahide · 08/08/2024 21:16

Lighthearted - mostly!

I’m so sick of paper straws turning to mush before a drink is even finished, they just aren’t fit for purpose. Add in the awful wooden cutlery that you now get (I want my salad to actually taste like salad, not wood!!) and the cardboard takeaway containers which begin to disintegrate as soon as they touch food and all of a sudden I’m reconsidering whether the planet is really worth saving…

I’m joking of course but surely I’m not the only one who feels this way? There have to be better alternatives out there than paper, wood & cardboard that just seem to ruin everything!

Paper straws are useless for my disabled DD. She can only drink through a straw, she can’t use an open cup or sports bottle top etc and she just chews them. She bites the wooden cutlery and it cracks in her mouth. I’ve had to buy a set of metal drinking straws and a set of cutlery in a small carry case that I take everywhere with me for her.

Insertcreativenamehere · 09/08/2024 18:48

Totally agree!! Sets my teeth on edge with paper and wood!! My teeth are going just typing this 😫

Cornflakelover · 09/08/2024 18:48

I was going to buy a metal straw until I read about it lady who fell over and the straw went into the back of eye and she died

I have a few plastic ones that I keep in my car / bag or I ask for extra straws from Starbucks / McDonald’s so when it goes mushy I just use another straw which probably defeats the object

Blacksheepcat · 09/08/2024 18:49

The alternative is to have your own travel cutlery, reusable cup and reusable container. And a metal or reusable straw if you really need a straw.

I have a (silicone) straw for my cocktails on a Saturday night!

Yep - l hate Subway salads in cardboard boxes and paper straws are not fit for purpose unless you are drinking out of an egg cup!

It may not be as nice to eat from as a proper plate, but surely you can put up with eating out of cardboard every once in a while when the need arises?

It's not as if you have to do it every day, is it? Nobody is asking you to use cardboard boxes at home instead of plates, after all.

And straws. Is there actually any need for them at all?

Personally I don’t fancy walking through the city with a full, open cup. It doesn’t tend to go well.

Then the answer is don't walk! Just drink the drink at the place you've bought it from, then hand back the cup to the person who gave it to you and be on your way. Problem solved. No lids or straws required.

BluebirdBoogie · 09/08/2024 19:14

No idea why anyone uses straws anyway. I haven't used one since I was about 10 🤔

cookiebee · 09/08/2024 19:15

Quite a number of years ago I skipped off to the Arndale shopping centre in Manchester to buy birthday supplies for my partners birthday, lived in the city centre, so about a 25 min walk each way. I excitedly selected all the bits and bobs to make a cake and a few nice little things, went to pay, and all my items were put in a paper bag, ok I thought, that’s fine, I suppose it’s better for the environment, well it’s not better for a Manchester environment, it rains a lot in case any of you haven’t been there. By the time I got home I was reduced to a foul mouthed slightly sobbing wreck, as the rain had reduced my paper bag to mush and all my supplies kept slipping from my arms sporadically, with me trying to stack and insert them into the mushy stump that was left of my bag, from that day forward I’ve hated all paper bags, when paper straws were introduced it was like my old foe had kept away from me, regrouped into a different form, and then snuck back in disguise to ruin my life all over again!

I can’t stand anything paper or card being near food, makes me gag 😂. Any chips from the fish shop touching the paper for example, I can’t touch, I’m weird, same with paper straws, just wet paper and card really, so there is lots I don’t touch now, my issue alone though.

Us humans have kind of backed ourselves into a corner really. Take everyone saying that some disabled or ill folk need straws to keep hydrated, or else they would be in trouble. Well here is a great example of how over the centuries humans have invented things to help save people who wouldn’t have thrived and would have died, and it’s wonderful we have, but in doing so we are creating lot of waste, like plastic straws, the alternatives go soggy, but we are resourceful and as we go along hopefully someone will think of something that doesn’t go soggy, doesn’t taste weird, feel weird or hurt kids mouths and also isn’t made of plastic, that includes sippy type cups, that will replace the plastic ones properly. But ultimately we still have to manufacture all these things, so it’s just the way the world is, as I say we are backed into a corner where a lot of wasteful things are things we need to survive, like disposable gloves in hospitals for example.

We will absolutely make ourselves extinct one day, but I sure as shit don’t have the solution, but I sure do hate paper straws and paper bags 😂

SamW98 · 09/08/2024 19:20

I hate paper straws so I bought a pack of reusable ones from Amazon and carry a couple with me

Yourinmyspot · 09/08/2024 19:28

I hate paper straws with a passion. I hate the feel of them in my mouth, I use my own metal ones now on the odd occasion I need one.

What really gives me the rage are the attached bottle caps, they just get in the way and I rip the ruddy things off anyway as can’t get the cap back on otherwise. I always recycled it together anyway.

Sorry should have put a disclaimer to say it is only Subway salads l hate in cardboard, happy to have fish and chips or a pizza out of cardboard but salad? Nah. Pretty sire Subway don't care about the lost sale of one salad every so often.
If straws aren't needed, then why are they still a thing? But actually l carry metal straws in my bag so l don't use crappy paper ones anyway.

PeepDeBeaul · 09/08/2024 20:44

You can pick up travel cutlery sets on amazon, which include a knife fork and spoon, straw and sometimes chopsticks. I added another straw to mine and the set graces the front pocket of my daybag. lifesaver on many occasions. Just wrap them in a serviette and run them through the dishwasher at home that evening. Combine with a collapsible silicon mug for true eco awareness.

Boysgrownbutstillathome · 09/08/2024 21:19

I use bamboo straws at home and really like them.

Lulu49 · 09/08/2024 21:29

Just buy silicone straws and stick a few in your bag

ShoehornSheryl · 08/08/2024 21:21

We went to America last year and the single use plastic and the like was ASTOUNDING. I’m sure other countries are the same. And yet little old England is trying to save the planet with paper straws and attaching the fecking bottle lid to the bottle.

😂😂😂😂😂

Lorrainedrops · 09/08/2024 23:28

I find paper straws stick to my mouth. I wouldn't like silicone straws as I wouldn't like the texture and rubbery taste?

JustAnotherDadOf2 · 10/08/2024 00:57

mcdonalds medium coke / shake / frappe ALWAYS needs 2 to 3 straws to finish. I always ask for (and get) spares.

How about having to pay for plastic bags? Ridiculous, there's way more plastic packaging used for food - it's just more profit for the supermarkets. We used to use the plastic backs for dog poop collection, now have to buy extra extra poop bags.

Mt61 · 10/08/2024 02:12

Yes they are very child friendly- not

Mt61 · 10/08/2024 02:14

Thanks for reminding me- down to my last plastic straw (use them to floss my teeth), just ordered some 😊

Harmonypus · 10/08/2024 03:08

I don't worry about soggy straws, wooden cutlery or disintegrating cardboard food boxes, because whenever I go out I always have a metal straw and travel mug in my handbag, there are a couple of sets of travel cutlery, melamine plates and plastic glasses in a little lunchbag in the boot of my car.

chattyness · 10/08/2024 07:11

We use silicone straws at home and don't eat takeaway food apart from fish and chips now and again but I can't stand the cartons they put them in they just don't keep the food hot and they leak grease and vinegar.I wish they'd go back to paper wrappers, much better

malificent7 · 10/08/2024 07:21

Why do u all need straws. I'd rather have a nice plastic free planet than drink through a straw....straws are for nursing homes.

malificent7 · 10/08/2024 07:27

Apparently there are far lrss plastic bags in the environment now...great news.
I think it's great we have to pay for plastic bags ( bit like a tax ) in the same way I think that cigarettes should remain very expensive.
I just take my bags for life shopping..saves a fortune.
