Shouldn’t my periods have stopped by now?

I’m 55 in a couple of months. I’ve missed a few periods here and there, but generally still going strong. Currently in a lot of pain and in the middle of a very heavy one. Anyone else still having periods at almost 55? I’m desperate for this to just end!

My mum did - she ended up being referred as she thought there was something wrong with her having odd bleeding but the consultant just said sorry you’re not fully menopausal yet.

Stopthatknocking · 07/08/2024 22:07

I hear you, OP. I'm 52 and after a few irregular months, I'm back to regular, heavy, painful periods.
So fed up of it.

PeachyKeane · 07/08/2024 22:07

I think it's a good sign for longevity, but a pita for you. I'm nearly 55 and the same but think they have finally started pestering out recently.

Sunburnisrareinscotland · 07/08/2024 22:08

53 here. An awful one every 3 months since last year. .

Summerbay23 · 07/08/2024 22:08

I’m the same at 52, ended up having the mirena coil put back in which is literally a life saver.

Blondiebeachbabe · 07/08/2024 22:10

Gah!! My mum was 51, I think. She’s passed now but I’m sure that’s what she said. So very heavy today, like nothing I’ve experienced before. Thought I’d be done by now!

Good for longevity??

Yep same here OP. Am in my 50s and periods like bloody clockwork.

MigAndMog · 07/08/2024 22:18

I'm 54 and two years ago I started hot flushes and my periods became very light, then stopped for a bit, then came back every now and again. For the last 6 months they have been regular again and fairly heavy. The more the periods came back, the more the hot flushes disappeared. I'm due a period this week but had a tiny bleed and hot flushes instead! So maybe they are finally stopping for good.

Anonymouseposter · 07/08/2024 22:18

I was 58 when I had a hysterectomy. I hadn't missed any periods at that point. They had become extremely heavy which was a big nuisance. My mother had regular periods until she was 55.

Blondiebeachbabe · 07/08/2024 22:21

I’m in pain. What a bloody faff.

59 and had one for two weeks earlier this year so back for another hysteroscopy and a few polyps removed ... Started aged 11. I dread to think how much of my life has been spent in period pain (or the financial cost). Has affected work, fitness, and socialising. Bored to tears with it.

Wish someone had listened when i asked for a hysterectomy at age 30.

BloodyHellKenAgain · 07/08/2024 22:32

My periods were very regular and then just stopped at 52 with no warning, no hot flushes etc, nothing so maybe yours will just stop too?
I always imagined that periods stop gradually but apparently not in some cases.

My mum was menopausal at 45, lived to be 93.

Icequeen01 · 07/08/2024 22:39

My sister is 61 and still having regular periods! She floods a lot and it’s become a real problem. Her GP told her she’s the oldest woman they have ever had who is still in perimenopause! She’s getting hot flushes so she’s hoping they will stop soon!

Wow, I sometimes think about the most menstrual cycles anyone’s ever had and you must be up there… This year’s my 40th year of periods, although I don’t have many now I’ve got a Mirena. Maybe 60 will be your lucky year!

Sheri99 · 07/08/2024 22:42

Sorry you are dealing with this.

Parted with uterus and ovaries due to heavy bleeding in early 50s and it was the best thing ever. No more cancer worries in that department. Lost 20 lbs, too!!

God, I'm so jealous! I'm done with this crappy stage of life now.

UtterlyOtterly · 07/08/2024 22:46

Regular as clockwork until 58, then petered out over four or five months. I think that's quite unusual though.

ShinyNewMe · 07/08/2024 23:00

I had my last period age 61 although they started to become less regular from 59.

Lovingsummers · 07/08/2024 23:02

Good to read from some that it can happen quite quickly. Is it more of a shock to the system to stop suddenly rather than gradually?

MsCactus · 07/08/2024 23:08

From what I understand of menopause you keep having periods for about five years after you become infertile, on average. Can be even longer.

So very possible to still have periods late. I think they tend to be anovulatory though (is that the right term?) basically you won't be ovulating with them at this age.

GoldenLegend · 07/08/2024 23:13

I believe 52 is the average in the U.K. Mine were horribly heavy for about three months then stopped when I was 53.

I feel myself ovulate every month. I don't want to be still going in five years!
