Shouldn’t my periods have stopped by now?

I’m 55 in a couple of months. I’ve missed a few periods here and there, but generally still going strong. Currently in a lot of pain and in the middle of a very heavy one. Anyone else still having periods at almost 55? I’m desperate for this to just end!

I'm 53 and have a mirena coil, total gamechanger! No periods and I'm hoping by the time I have it taken out in 5 years, menopause will have kicked in!!

Periods with coil never stopped for me, they were just erratic and a bit lighter, generally. I've had three. Current one is due to come out but they've lost the strings so I have to go for a scan.

Not sure what to do after that, certainly don't want to get pregnant.

I didn't know that having children delays the menopause either.........

It can reduce the chances of earlier menopause.

What age did you start? Apparently an earlier start age is linked with a later menopause. Some fucking cruel twist that. I started at 11 😬

My GP said the opposite! Maybe they tell you whatever they think is reassuring.

I was nearly 14 and it’s well over 40 years and still going strong, the bastards.

GinAndBeerIt · 08/08/2024 02:32

I'm 62 and still have periods every month, as regular as clockwork ☹️
I started mine when I was 10.

From what I understand of menopause you keep having periods for about five years after you become infertile, on average. Can be even longer.

So very possible to still have periods late. I think they tend to be anovulatory though (is that the right term?) basically you won't be ovulating with them at this age.

Quite untrue, actually. Use birth control until menopause is complete; a baby at 56 is more than a pleasant "surprise".

I think you might be some kind of record holder?

I'm almost 57. I had regular periods up until a year ago. I had one at Christmas and another this week. I've had enough now!!!!

Namechangedasouting987 · 08/08/2024 08:22

Mine became extremely heavy for a year before they stopped. Like proper and unusually (for me) heavy. Flooding etc. So maybe the end is close for you....

KimberleyClark · 08/08/2024 08:24

I’m childless. Was diagnosed with premature ovarian failure, or primary ovarian insufficiency as it’s now called, but continued to have regular periods for another 6 years until they started becoming irregular then had my last one at 50 which is pretty average.

Doggymummar · 08/08/2024 08:25

Yes, I've got a gynie appointment at the end of the month as it's not usual apparently 😞

Mine didn’t,they became lighter and lighter. I’ve never used hormonal contraception though apart from for a year in my 20s before I met my DH. I wonder if that makes a difference?

BeyondMyWits · 08/08/2024 08:30

Had my last period at 57. Just stopped... period one month, none the next or since. Menopause "symptoms" (flushes, sweats, aches in bones and muscles, insomnia etc) are fewer, with less effect now I'm 60.

I hope it goes ok for you and there is nothing untoward going on.

Oh no! That is horrific! 😖

According to my GP, it's normal 😂
But then, I don't think my GP knows his arse from his elbow half of the time.

susiedaisy1912 · 08/08/2024 17:33

54 this month and my mirena is over 5 years old so has run out of progesterone and periods have starting creeping back and although they are light I'm getting cramps, backache and craving carbs so going to get a new mirena coil put in I think. It will be my 4th one.

Davidfromcorrie · 16/02/2025 21:15

Regular as clockwork. 54 in a month. Currently "on" with cats clawing at my innards. Blood everywhere. Sick to the back teeth. Still getting that horrible jelly gush every month where you actually have to sponge it with a tissue

Davidfromcorrie · 16/02/2025 21:17

I don't think it is. . I'm still going most I know have stopped. Shouldn't think I'll be sixty but some will. There are always exceptions to the rule

justasking111 · 16/02/2025 22:34

Regular as clockwork until I was 56 and they just stopped.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 16/02/2025 23:05

I never had heavy or painful periods but they got further apart for the last year or so - I had 4 altogether in 2019 and then one, which turned out to be the last, in early 2020 when I was 54. No real menopause symptoms apart from the changed cycle. I hope the same happens for you soon!
