Seems to be happening in many places tonight.

Seen quite a few on this Twitter feed: Stan Collymore on X: "Anti fascist rally, Liverpool, England. https://t.co/MgSI42zRBr" / X

Just hopefully the racists get the message around the country.

The Home Secretary has asked people not to go to counter-protests. I can understand that it's a demand on police resources and there's a risk of conflict. But it also feels important to go out and show that most people don't agree with racism and violence.

soupfiend · 07/08/2024 19:41

Absolutely this, people just need to stay home, having counter protests is going to end in tears. We dont need any more large groups of people gathering to be heard about anything.

Remember that if you get caught up in genuine far right mob demo
A lot of these people have form for violence in and around football disorder.
Would like all to be safe from harm really hope it peters out.

Wakeywake · 07/08/2024 22:20

There are some planned in Scotland apparently and I wish they just stayed at home. There's been no trouble over here until now, but it only takes a spark to ignite it, a few infiltrators shouting abuse, a couple of thugs throwing punches and next thing you know you've got full blown violence. It's really not a good idea.

ghostyslovesheets · 07/08/2024 22:32

No trouble - a good night for England - people stood up and the fascists ran away

no police attacked by anti fascists, no shops looted - well done the sane people

I think the people living in fear of the riots and the racists needed to see they were supported and what British values really are.

Absolutely.

macaroniandcheeze · 07/08/2024 22:36

I’m pleased, some areas near me are boarded up with rumours of riots and there is a large crowd of anti-racism groups there already.

It really important. I hope that the anti-racist protests are calm with no trouble.

I completely disagree with those saying the anti-fascist protesters should have "just stayed at home". Many with racist views cling to the belief that they are "just saying what everyone else is thinking". It's hugely important that this is challenged, that people turn out to show that no, the majority of people in this country do not agree with them. If decent people allow these violent thugs to stop them from exercising their right to peaceful protest, then the fascists have won.

Totally agree

A right, proper, British protest indeed
😊

We had tea at ours 😁

Agree with @neverbeenskiing - just look at this photo of Brighton tonight.
Outnumbered & peaceful.

DickEmery · 07/08/2024 22:49

For me it was important because my town was on a list. If fascists are going to target my town then I wanted to send a clear message to them that we people who live here do not want fascists on our streets.

And so we did.

EmpressoftheMundane · 07/08/2024 22:51

Intellectually, I know the best thing is to stay home and not risk confrontations or crowd issues.

But, I do find it cheering to see do many people standing against racism and xenophobia. I hope the pictures on the news of the large crowds in Walthamstow gave my Muslim friends, neighbours and colleagues some comfort. They’ve been feeling very “other.” Sometimes and outpouring of love is what is needed.

SallyWD · 07/08/2024 22:54

It's made my day. Really warmed my heart seeing all the videos.

Prawncow · 07/08/2024 22:58

I know it’s not the best thing from a policing point of view but I agree that it’s really comforting to see counter protests. It won’t stop the very small number of hardcore, far-right, Nazi-saluting scum but it will put off the idiots who tag along with them because they like a fight (and a bit of looting.)

HRTQueen · 07/08/2024 23:03

A show in force that many (the majority) will not accept such hatred is needed

many people need to feel supported at the moment

the police won’t have to deal with violence as these gathering are about wanting peace not spreading hatred

GoadyMcBigot · 07/08/2024 23:16

racist MN posters yesterday; people need to b heard, they are desperate, it is their right to riot protest. But two tier policing, police are terrible wah wah wah

racist MN posters today; it’s terrible people are counter protesting, waste of the poor police’s time. Wah wah wah

I think these peaceful counter protesters are wonderful and put paid to the notion that we are ignoring some silent majority. The rioters are a bunch of entitled wankers who thought that after Brexit all those who voted Brexit alongside them were racist little fucks too.

86% of the population did not vote for reform. Why the fuck do we need to listen to the. And ignore the 86%. If that’s not entitlement then what is??

fuck off racist rioting twats. Off you go home (or to your jail cells)

Whenwillitgetwarm · 07/08/2024 23:19

I briefly attended one of the counter demos but left early as I didn’t want to be caught in the middle of a large crowd if something happened.

I was pleased so many people turned out to show that decent people are the majority. We cannot let the far right and their online agitators crawl out from the Telegram echo chambers, and create the a false sense that they speak for the majority of people in this country.

Robinson, Farage, Fox, Musk want us all to be permanently scared, angry and fighting. It keeps them in business.

Also the large presence of anti racists would have protected the police. The racists would have been crazy to come out faced with the huge numbers of opposition there.

JaneBirkinstock · 07/08/2024 23:23

The people who have turned out to counter protest tonight may well have just put this hideous chapter to bed.

I think it's more likely seeing their fellow thugs getting jail sentences put a damper on their enthusiasm. Plus there's only so much rioting a person can do before they get bored.

Salarygoals · 07/08/2024 23:25

I completely disagree. I strongly defend the right to peaceful protest. It is a fundamental right and part of a democratic society.

Moreover if people weren't coming out it sends a message of apathy which breeds more negativity.

GoadyMcBigot · 07/08/2024 23:27

👏Spot on. this cannot be repeated enough!

understanding the motives of these odious sub-humans is so important.

User135644 · 07/08/2024 19:43

Maybe, but if tonight's show of strength around the country helps deter any more cowardly rioters then that helps the police.

It won't deter them. I went on Friday but the crowd that turned up on Saturday was looking to inflame the situation. The chanting was verbal abuse. The Police made the mistake of letting the two groups meet. We left, as did a lot of "pensioners fight back" and "nans against nazis". The worry is that it's turned into a fight. The Police asked people to not go tonight. With what's happening in Austria and Taylor Swift having to cancel all of her concerts, no further fanning of flames should be done.

BettyWhiteIsGreat · 08/08/2024 00:06

I thought it was wonderful to see and much needed. I hope it sends a message to the racists that actually no you're not speaking for the majority at all.
