To be annoyed that Twitter never takes action on reported tweets?

Over the last few days I’ve reported numerous blatantly racist and abusive tweets. Every single one has come back saying it’s not broken the rules. How? What on earth do you have to do to get them to take any action?

It’s a fucking cesspit since Musk took over.

@TiredArse
From my perspective, Elon Musk's decision not to delete or block more posts on social media is the cornerstone to free speech. In today's climate, where topics like colonialism, white privilege, and gender ideology are highly charged, I believe it's crucial to allow open debate. This type of debate needs to be uncomfortable else there will be no meaningful growth.

Many people feel that they've been silenced or marginalized for too long, leading to pent-up frustration and resentment. This suppression of speech has, in my view, contributed to the social unrest and riots we're seeing now. Musk seems to recognize that by permitting diverse viewpoints, even controversial ones, we can engage in the necessary and constructive dialogue needed for progress. Else it only feeds the ever growing fire.

I’m also concerned that strict moderation, including deleting posts and prosecuting individuals for their opinions, is akin to controlling what people can and cannot say. This only further erodes free speech and increases societal tensions.

There's nothing wrong with free speech in regard to open debate.

"I hope you fucking burn in a house fire, you black bitch," is not open debate, it's literally a racist threat made against me, and yes, I reported it, and no, Twitter/X did fuck all about it.

Ok I’ve been dying to ask this question for a long while in relation to this subject (and similar topics). For those who want these types of posts (I’m going to exclude the one about boys in swimwear for this question)

Do you think that deleting the msg makes the message really go away? I mean it doesn’t stop anyone from thinking like that, saying it out loud at the dinner table, or passing it on to anyone who will listen. Aren’t you just driving underground where it can get louder, so to speak?

So we should allow people to make racist (sexist, disablist, abusive etc) comments because if we don’t they might get more racist?

That is bollocks. Allowing it to go unchecked emboldens them.

Debate is fine. Abuse is not.

You didn’t answer my question though.

Do think that blocking these comments make them go away? As in solve the problem?

If you block, delete, or click "show less of this" the algorithm learns that you don't like seeing racist shit and stops showing it you you.

I think the algos have changed in the last year or so. Before I came off it, I was being served more and more racist/offensive shit that I was blocking like there was no tomorrow, never engaging with (except to block) and was so far away from the stuff I was seeking, such as dog behavioural videos etc.

It was my genuine suspicion that Twitter was now TRYING to serve me controversial views that made me delete it.

You mean if Twitter deletes with a message saying this isn’t acceptable for x reason? Yes, I think it does help. It’s not going to solve the problem completely, but it reinforces that abuse is not acceptable.

If someone said it in real life, say at work or school, would you just ignore?

I think you’re right. I see so much less of the fun, interesting stuff I follow, and far too much deeply unpleasant content. And I also don’t interact other than to report or block.

Just stop using the platform. If enough people did that then something would have to change.

Fair enough… and thanks for answering.

I’d probably call them a knob and move on with my life knowing who they were. If they hadn’t said it out loud I’d never know what they really thought.

Here’s what I’m thinking… so you’ve got a group of friends having lunch. One of them says something racist. Would you rather know that’s how they felt or would you rather not know? Me I’d rather know and make an informed choice about spending time with them. The problem with not giving them a space to say stupid things, I’ll never know how they feel. Either way they’ll be racist.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 07/08/2024 20:55

The thread going on right now about a poster who wants ammunition against her misogynistic brother is a great example… because he’s been allowed to say twatty things she now can decide if she wants to confront him, educate him, cut him off, etc. If she didn’t know he had those views he’d still have them, right?

Bravo @Sparklybutold for speaking the absolute TRUTH.

You will get flamed for that on here. You can only have one view on MN or you are torn apart.
There is no real debate and no democracy.
People cannot say how they really feel, and MN is just one tiny part of a far bigger picture of course.
All my trips to China and those experiences are beginning to be reflected in life in the UK.
THANK YOU

You choosing not to spend more time with your friend is the real life version of closing someone’s account on Twitter though. In both cases they’ve said something inappropriate and nobody wants to hear their crap anymore.

I agree but start of this was Twitter blocking/deleting/etc. not about users deleting their accounts.

Twitter used to ban people if they were repeatedly abusive. Now the don’t even delete posts if they threaten violence.

Yes I know… that’s not what I was asking.

Do you want to know if people are abusive or do you want it hidden (on Twitter, FB, or real life)?

Telephonewiresabove · 07/08/2024 21:13

Engage with posts you want to see more of and don’t engage with posts (including hate engagement) you don’t want to see.
It’s an algorithm, it’s not hard.

People who have been on the wrong side of twitter censorship - including women who were banned under previous twitter administrations for saying men were men - value Musk’s commitment to free speech.

Scorchio84 · 07/08/2024 21:19

This is the exact opposite of my experience. They're definitely engagement farming but the algorithm kinda works for me - I get more of the stuff I interact with and less of the stuff I block. I do have to be careful about how much I interact with inoffensive people I disagree with though.

Absolutely agree. This is exactly whats happened in recent years, where a lot of voices have been silenced and now we have the consequences of that. Its built up pressure that will finally find a way out.
