I don't agree. She says 'everyone is taking it and it works'. She is 20 and ND. Also overweight (in the obese category just). Has social anxiety and vapes too much which makes physical exercise difficult as she's too embarrassed. There is no one for her to exercise with and she won't do it alone. She thinks the injection is the answer. Help!

Mounjaro may affect the absorption of some other medicines. Tell your healthcare provider about all medicines that you take or have recently taken. In particular, make sure you tell your healthcare provider if you take birth control pills.

Everyone was quick to ‘understand’ Covid vaccines - not so much now for new drugs.

It’s is not licensed for weight loss.

The effects of the drugs are unknown.

As it’s not licensed your GP will not prescribe it.

This is just plain wrong. Mounjaro and Wegovy are licensed for weight loss. The effects are known and studied, as with all other licensed medicines. GPs in some places will prescribe them for weightloss, as part of the Tier 3 treatment for obesity. Private doctors can prescribe them.

GLP1 drugs aren’t really new, they’ve been around a long time.

They are also licensed for weight loss.

I don't think they just dish it out to people who can't be bothered to try exercising first. Can't you exercise with her?

A calorie-restricted diet is the main method of losing weight, exercise is a small part and if you're not controlling what you eat then you won't lose weight. Private prescribers will prescribe these injections to people who meet the medical requirements of being obese (plus other medical history checks), and who have not been successful with sticking to a calorie-controlled diet.

Trust me it is not the answer. I know someone who has been on the injections for a couple of months purely for weight loss and they fear they will now have permanent gastrointestinal issues related to toileting

Absolutely this. My husband was put in these injections quite some time ago because he is diabetic. Poor man has had the most horrendous digestive issues with them. It’s made food a minefield. Wouldn’t wish it on anyone. It’s really not the magic wand (I’ll-informed) people think it is.

SilenceInside · 09/08/2024 19:11

@MrsSkylerWhite which injection was your husband on, for how long? What are the permanent digestive issues he's now got?

tuttuttutt · 09/08/2024 19:20

I can't believe people would use these injections when just in the obese category. It only takes a few weeks/months to lose that weight by not eating so much.

Semaglutide (Wegovy) launched in the UK on 4 September and is available on the NHS as an option for weight management in line with NICE guidance, alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

I am type 2 diabetic very ill with a stress eating binge disorder,my last lot of blood tests were shocking, my gp knows i cant help it, he agreed i could have it on the nhs, i have lost 1 stone 9 pounds in 10 weeks, not had 1 craving for chocolate or cake in that time, he spoke to me after a month and is so pleased for me, my concern would be her age, ,its a life changer but, not just a case of jab then lose weight .on a facebook page for it a few people are racing through the dose strenghts a month at a time and really suffering with side effects, i am still on low starter dose its working well. it can be around 130 to 150 a month to start with on line chemists, higher doses cost more, you have to fill in medical stuff sent a photo how big you are, send a photo of weighing scales, good luck

I can assure you that every single person who ends up on injectibles has tried that a minimum of 100 times.
