To marvel at privately educated Keir Starmer's hypocrisy?

Bursarysadness · 06/08/2024 16:03

Both Kier Starmer and his wife are privately educated. Kier's senior school converted into a private school in the second year of his attendance and he has received a generous full bursary up until his A levels. He has built his life and his success on this education, supported to the end by the bursary funded by the same schools and parents he is now trying to destroy. It pains me as my children receive 50% bursaries from a brilliant local school. We've worked incredibly hard to cover the remaining 50% but it has been worth it, seeing how my children blossomed. We had a very different experience in their primary state schools, including bullying and racism. We don't live in a great area. We have just been told that the school will probably reduce all their bursaries to be able to lower the fees for the non bursary parents who are now struggling because of the VAT introduction. I don't know what the future for my children is now and they have so many close friends where they are. They are both academically brilliant and work very hard - hence the bursaries were granted. I feel so depressed that, from what is becoming obvious, they won't be able to benefit from the generosity of bursaries the same way Kier Starmer did when he was a child ..

Oh give it a rest.
Did you feel so strongly when the Conservatives came for free school meals?

If your children are as academically brilliant as you say, they will flourish regardless.

Sosospring · 06/08/2024 16:09

Well... Perhaps they will know the difference between 'your" and "you're" at least ..

Westfacing · 06/08/2024 16:10

Keir, it's Keir.

As a child he would have had no say in his parents' choice of school.

And he sends his own children to state schools - where is the hypocrisy?

Frustrating autocorrect, it's always switching them and I don't scan back before pressing send/post

Campcritters · 06/08/2024 16:11

I didn’t think he was banning bursaries?

AllGrownUp1465 · 06/08/2024 16:12

Keir Starmer’s parents didn’t choose to send him to a private school, it’s not quite the same if converting half way through and I’m not sure he got a bursary, more they didn’t charge students already there fees when they converted.

I would not say he is a hypocrite, more that he probably has a good sense of private schools due to his experience of private schools.

Being even able to consider to send your kids to private schools is a highly privileged position considering there is a lot of issues with child poverty at the moment— and even my fiends who do send their kids to private school agree that it is privileged

Qwertys · 06/08/2024 16:13

Can’t be bothered reading your post. There should be no private schools.

I do not resent people who send their children to private schools. Most would likely do the same given the option. But it simply should not be an option.

I do resent the people who churn out the endless tone-deaf posts about this very far from radical policy.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 06/08/2024 16:14

YABU and ridiculous.

His parents chose a state school where no fees were payable. Yes, the school converted to private while he was there, but the fact is, they sent him to a state school and that's why he didn't have to pay. You have chosen to send your kids to a fee paying school. I am genuinely sorry if you can't afford it any more, but the two situations are not comparable.

But regardless, even if Starmer had gone to an entirely fee paying school from the beginning, he would be entitled to form his own views on private education and not simply adopt those of his parents. What's the point of educating kids at all if they aren't allowed to think and draw their own conclusions?

As for his wife's schooling, it is irrelevant. She is not in public office.

Bluestonecat · 06/08/2024 16:15

Yes but ALL children need a good education not just your children.
All state schools need to be good to provide this.
Just move your children to your local state school if they are as brilliant and hard working as you claim they should be fine .
Area shouldn't matter should it if your child really is so able.

Bursarysadness · 06/08/2024 16:16

My children experienced racism in their primary state school. This is sadly my experience of the state sector. The school did next to nothing about it

I went to private school, on part scholarship part bursary, a decision made by my parents not by me. I am fully in support of Labour’s VAT plans, its pretty weird if you think my opinions and morals as an adult should be dictated by the decisions my parents took 30+ years go.

BIWI · 06/08/2024 16:17

This shite again? It's too late anyway, the Labour Party won the election and Sir Keir Starmer is now our Prime Minister.

My friend experienced racism in their private school, I think it depends on the school.

GoldenPombear · 06/08/2024 16:17

If your kids are that amazing, they'll do well wherever. If you can afford 50% of school fees then you're not skint, stick the kids in state school and pay for tutors.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 06/08/2024 16:18

What has his wife’s life history got to do with it op? She’s a person in her own right not just a part of him.

x2boys · 06/08/2024 16:18

I think with everything else going on in the UK at the moment ge has rather more to worry about 🙄

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 06/08/2024 16:19

I feel a bit embarrassed for the OP. The entitlement dripping from her post is incredible.

Frowningprovidence · 06/08/2024 16:20

It's not hypocritical.
He didn't make the choice, his parents did.
It didn't start as a private school it converted.
He hasn't banned private schools
He hasn't banned bursaries.
My understanding is his children are state educated but even if they weren't, he would presumably pay the VAT.

I'm not keen on the policy at all but it's not hypocritical.

Iwant20cats · 06/08/2024 16:20

This has been done to death already

I don't get this comment.

In my original post, my phone had autocorrected "your" to "you're". I've changed it now.
They were attempting condescension.

itsgettingweird · 06/08/2024 16:21

Keir went to grammar school.

For that he had to pass a test.

You can't blame him nor any of the other pupils and parents for the schools decision to change to an independent school whilst they attended.

Fwiw part of the schools decision to change meant it wasn't a fee paying school for all pupils already in attendance until they were 16.

He remained at the school for post 16 education with a 100% bursary.

Nothing he had is unavailable to pupils today. You can attend an independent school if they decide to provide you a 100% bursary/ scholarship regardless of VAT.

Your school report today reads "must do better"

UpTheMagicFarawayTree · 06/08/2024 16:21

I went to private school, it was my parent's choice. I also think private schools should be taxable as they are a luxury. I wouldn't send my own child to private.
