King or super king bed?

Oldermum84 · 06/08/2024 10:39

We need a new bed frame and mattress and I'm debating whether to get a king or super king. Currently we have a European (IKEA) double which is 140cm wide, so the king size at 150cm doesn't seem much more. I'm average size but DH is tall and large.

Our room isn't that big. It's 12ft4 x 9ft8, the longer wall being the head of the bed. The only furniture in the room will be a chest of drawers against the wall at the foot end (with about a foot of space between that and the bed so can just walk through and open the drawers) and bedside tables (small wardrobe is built in in the corner). I'm going to get rid of my dressing table but that's ok as I don't really use it.

Will a super king bed be ridiculously big in this room? Is sacrificing pretty much all floor space for a bed worth it?

YABU: super king is too big for this room.

YANBU: go for the super king.

In UK sizes, the king is only 10cm bigger than a double. But a super king is 40cm bigger than a double.
We got one a few years ago - it’s amazing! We both love that we are nowhere near each other in bed 😃 and he can get up and go to the toilet and I don’t wake up anymore as I don’t even feel the difference in movement. We have one where the mattress lifts up for under bed storage so that’s extra space too. I love it and don’t regret it, but perhaps mark out in your room to see how much space it would be? Also bare in mine duvets, covers etc are more expensive (also often not available in high street shops - I spotted some for the first time in habitat the other day but usually have to get online)

Projectme · 06/08/2024 10:51

everything @SaltedCaramelEverything said.

We had a king size but after 10 years we've recently upgraded to a super king. god I wish we'd done it before! it's wonderful having all the extra space, I don't notice so much when DH gets out of bed in the night and his snores rarely vibrate right across the bed now like they used to 🙄😂

I get all the bedding from amazon.

Flyonthewall01 · 06/08/2024 10:54

i have a super-king and honestly it’s so good! I could never go back. If you are planning on living there long term or you rent and don’t want anything else in your room go for it! If you are wanting to sell in a few years I’d maybe think about it as it would make your room look tiny.

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 06/08/2024 10:56

I think it depends- are you planning on selling soon? If yes go king as there will appear to be more room in the bedroom; if not go super king and live the life of luxury - sleep is important

DeedlessIndeed · 06/08/2024 10:56

Love our superking - would not be without it

Isis1981uk · 06/08/2024 10:56

We have a super-king and, once you have one, you never go back! We both sleep so much better as we effectively have a large single bed each. Now, even hotel beds seem really tiny!

Sagarmatha · 06/08/2024 10:58

Look at super king zip and link.

missshilling · 06/08/2024 11:03

A UK standard double is 4’6” wide. A king is 5’ and a superking is 6’. Both are 3” longer.

A superking is 18” (or nearly 46cm) wider than a double

I would work out where the superking comes to in your room on one side and pull your existing bed over to the same place. It will give you a better feel for how much usable room is left. Then repeat for the other side.

Ginkypig · 06/08/2024 11:04

I’ve got a king. It was a freebie from a family member so I didn’t get to choose the size but I spent out a bit on a decent mattress and it has been fine.

if I had the space and I didn’t have to replace all the bedding I probably would get a super king, especially now I am in menopause as it would give me the space to move around to escape the dreaded heat lol.

Borninabarn32 · 06/08/2024 11:05

Our bedroom is about twice the size of yours, we accidentally bought a super king instead of a king and it's huge.

Flixon · 06/08/2024 11:05

I have a super King all to myself and I bloody love it. My bedroom is a lot bigger than yours though ...

ChickenJeffrey · 06/08/2024 11:09

We have a superking and it's brilliant. My husband often moves and kicks in his sleep so I'm out of reach. We also have our own double duvets so no having to share.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 06/08/2024 11:10

Separate bedrooms!
DS has a super king and I find the duvet really heavy to wrangle the cover on to (yes, i get him to do it) and there seems to be so much more washing.

Watermelonistheanswertoallthings · 06/08/2024 11:17

Our bedroom is a similar width to yours and very slightly longer about 10'.
We have a superking...and it's amazing. We also got it from IKEA.
We don't have a headboard to add inches or a bedframe....the divan is just up on high ish legs so I can use niiace storage boxes underneath for out of season clothes.

We also have a built in wardrobe and a 6x3 malm unit at the end of the bed and have enough room to walk around and get into bed.

Ikea sell good quality high thread count cotton sheets, their duvets are pretty reasonable too. Then I buy all my duvet sets at TKmaxx and usually get very lucky as noone seems to be looking for superking size. I'm VERY particular about very nice sheets and duvets.

As you have extra width in a smallish room it won't look oversized. We have our bed pushed over to the side with just enough room for a bedside table and still have enough room left to look decent.

BCBird · 06/08/2024 11:20

Logistics re getting it.up.thr stairs is something to consider too

Sweetteaplease · 06/08/2024 11:22

Super king, everytime

Brbreeze · 06/08/2024 11:22

If you are at a stage of life where you have/will have young children, I’d go super king.

We had a king for years but it doesn’t fit a toddler who wants to sleep horizontally between you both. Upgraded to a super king before baby 2 arrived and we all fit in it better.

Gettingitrightfirsttime · 06/08/2024 11:22

A superking bed is LIFE CHANGING

Oldermum84 · 06/08/2024 11:31

Thanks all so far. The replies say super king but the vote is split?!

@Brbreeze yes we have 2 young kids.

@Gettingitrightfirsttime 🤣👍

@Watermelonistheanswertoallthings that's great to hear it works in your size room.

@PivotPivotmakingmargaritas not looking to move.

@BCBird have found a nice bed frame where you can pay £90 for them to take to your room and put it together so will do that so it's not out problem!

I’ve noticed there are more Superking duvet covers around these days.

discoballdave · 06/08/2024 11:49

We have a superking in a smaller room and wouldn't be without it now. We also have two single duvets on it in the same pattern bedding and it's changed our lives.

I've heard of this being a thing - does it not make the bed look messy?

OP posts:
discoballdave · 06/08/2024 13:26

@Oldermum84 A little messy but if you line them up just right, add a blanket to the foot of the bed and some scatter cushions it looks fine. To be fair, the superking bed needs more styling anyway as essentially you've got room for three pillows across so you've got to offset that anyway.

pizzatrucker · 06/08/2024 13:30

It isn't the logistics of the bed frame it is whether you can get a 6ft mattress up your stairs without bending it.

We struggled to get our 5ft mattress up our stairs and into our bedroom when we moved in so when we upgraded to the super king we went with a zip and link, 2 individual 3ft mattresses that zip together. You cannot feel the zip as it is tucked slightly down the side of the bed.

Best bed we ever bought. Lots of places do super king bedding these days.

Cheeesus · 06/08/2024 13:32

Yeah a king is 15cm wider than a double. Even for IKEA.

I wouldn’t want to manage a super king duvet cover, so it depends if you would be ok with two duvets. Super king would be a pita to dry and manhandle, and duvet covers are harder to find and really expensive. That’s only my superficial opinion though.
