King or super king bed?

We need a new bed frame and mattress and I'm debating whether to get a king or super king. Currently we have a European (IKEA) double which is 140cm wide, so the king size at 150cm doesn't seem much more. I'm average size but DH is tall and large.

Our room isn't that big. It's 12ft4 x 9ft8, the longer wall being the head of the bed. The only furniture in the room will be a chest of drawers against the wall at the foot end (with about a foot of space between that and the bed so can just walk through and open the drawers) and bedside tables (small wardrobe is built in in the corner). I'm going to get rid of my dressing table but that's ok as I don't really use it.

Will a super king bed be ridiculously big in this room? Is sacrificing pretty much all floor space for a bed worth it?

YABU: super king is too big for this room.

YANBU: go for the super king.

I really miss my super king. You spend a 1/3 of your life in your bed don't scrimp on it.

Silviasilvertoes · 06/08/2024 13:37

Superking every time.

For me it would be too much.
Too much huge bedding and just too much .... bed! I like plenty of air/space to walk around, not be squished up against walls by the bed.

Our bedroom is apx14ft x14ft with clothes in a dressing room so just bedside tables a couple of big plants and the bed in the room - loads of space - but i still wouldn't want to go bigger than King. It already takes 2 wash loads to do our bed as a high thread count makes the bedding heavy. The flapping of big sheets and covers ect and getting it all dry ...

If i had staff to do the washing and changing it might be different .... 😂

Definitely a superking, we upgraded 2 years ago and would never go back. You each have your own space and don't feel each fidget in the night, it's amazing. The bedding isn't too tricky either, I'm only short with short arms and can change the covers on my own, I usually use two pegs on the top corners to hold it in place.

We have a superking and love it. It's great having the extra space, although you have to pay extra for bedding of course.

My advice? Take your time and shop around when it comes to your new mattress though. I'm still try to find my Goldilocks mattress solution (ie just right) and I'm really struggling - most of them just feel too bloody hard, even if they're marketed as 'medium firm'.

Fortunately, many companies offer a sleep guarantee period, so you're not obliged to keep an unsuitable mattress if it doesn't work for you (assuming it is undamaged and you've used a mattress protector).

Super king 100%. I sacrificed a bedside table for it. No regrets.

We currently only have a king but would absolutely sacrifice floor space/bed side table space to fit a super king in our room. The extra space and comfort when sleeping would be so worth it in my opinion.
We have a toddler that likes to sleep in our bed so currently their cot is attached to the side of the bed so we have a lot of extra space anyway as one of us ends up half in there, I like the security of knowing she couldn't roll off the bed in her sleep that the cot brings but a super king and her staying in the middle would probably be more comfortable and more spacious.

Logistics re getting it.up.thr stairs is something to consider too

@BCBird surely that's the delivery company's problem? No idea how they got ours in but not really my problem

Coffeebreakneeds · 06/08/2024 14:49

We had a superking when ours were younger and it was amazing as there was so much space when they came in at night or for a cuddle, would highly recommend with little ones. We went back to a king when we moved (even though we had space for a super) as the bedding is huge and always felt like a chore it was always expensive to buy we didn't need the extra space. I think I prefer the super, but I am more than happy with a king, and I wouldnt want a bed to take over the room, I like floor space!

For bedding, turn the duvet cover inside out. Put the naked duvet on the bed. Place the cover over the 2 corners then roll the cover over itself until it is right side about. Then turn it round so the buttons are at the bottom of the bed.

No heavy lifting and it's done by one person easily.

Buy deep fitted sheets so your aren't fiddling around with them. Always put the most awkward corner on first I.e. the one beside the narrow wall and bedside table and work round the the easiest corner. Simple!

Definitely get it delivered. We brought ours home ourselves and nearly gor divorced on the stairs as I wasn't lifting my end high enough to go over the landing bannister. I'm 7" shorter and half your bodyweight "D"H.....I was very glad of the extre room in bed that night😂

Love love love our super king bed. We have a fairly large bedroom, but I would gladly have one in a smaller room. Bedding is easier to find these days, and I don't find it too difficult to change.

Our kids are grown up now, but when they were young, we could fit all three in the bed with us, it was lovely! Sometimes a child would crawl into bed with us in the night and we wouldn't even notice.

Gassylady · 06/08/2024 15:22

We have a super king and really love it. Our bedroom is big enough that we still have plenty of room to move around. But the duvet cover is a pain in the bum to change on my own, much easier as a two person job. We also bought an amazingly comfy mattress that needs flipping top to bottom. It is almost impossible to do because it is sooo heavy. If you go for it I would suggest a mattress that only needs rotating head to foot.

TonTonMacoute · 06/08/2024 16:02

I would love a super king but we weren’t prepared to sacrifice the floor space and I’m glad we didn’t, but only you know if it’s worth it or not.

We have just bought a lovely new king size, as a PP said the bed linen is quite a bit more expensive

Imonaplane · 06/08/2024 16:24

Super King but get a zip and link - two separate mattresses which zip together. You won't feel any movement from your DH. Also, you can get king sized pillows so that you don't need three to fill the space.
