I find it flattering now since i had dd! I know it's silly and they are sad, letchy old men but if i get whistled my self esteem feels better for it

Johnso · 14/04/2008 19:50

I like being called these things too.
Makes me feel perky

Notquitegrownup · 14/04/2008 19:51

lol. I was called 'Love' - as in "Sorry, Love, I'll move the van" by the builder next door recently. His mate then called him over, and he fairly sprinted back to me to apologise, and ask if I was offended!! I did think of my old Uni feminists, as I reassured him that I could cope with being Love, these days.

edam · 14/04/2008 19:53

I don't mind being called 'love' but that's because I'm from the North where everyone uses it.

ranting · 14/04/2008 19:56

Love is fine, young lady, nope, don't like, reminds me of my mum and because I'm a wee bit vertically challenged certain types of men refer to me as little girl (which incidentally makes me want to hack off their testes with a rusty scapel and force feed them down their throat, oh the rage!). But love is fine, draw the line at sweetheart for some bizarre reason.

MsSparkle · 14/04/2008 19:57

It's funny because the real working men who come in with oil/paint/cement all over them are the sweetest, kindest, chattiest most polite customers that i get in the shop i work in. They always say thank you, tell you to have a good day and don't look down on you just because you work in a shop.

windygalestoday · 14/04/2008 19:58

i love it when they say ello swedehart in a frank butcher voice

Johnso · 14/04/2008 20:11

I agree MissSparkle- Only these type of men give up their seat too ime

getmeouttahere · 14/04/2008 20:28

The day I DON'T get called a cheesey (nice) name or whistled at will be the day I worry about it.

maidamess · 14/04/2008 20:30

I havent been whistled at for ages...I've been oggled a couple of times but I long to be whistled at! How sad am I.

EffiePerine · 14/04/2008 20:33

agree that love and duck normal (and not restricted to women) where I'm from so OK.

I don't much like darlin though. Or flower. Or hen.

getmeouttahere · 14/04/2008 20:33

Not sad.

An appreciative whistle can make my day (even if it comes from a sweaty, gap-toothed, paunchy old geezer).

ranting · 14/04/2008 20:34

Oh I like flower, I used to work with a bloke who always called me flower, in return we called him fossil!

EffiePerine · 14/04/2008 20:36

Duchess is allowed though as suitably camp

edam · 14/04/2008 20:37

I call people sweetheart a lot. And no-one has ever objected! Have got some funny looks when I've forgotten where I am and called people 'love' down South, though.

edam · 14/04/2008 20:39

Nicest comment I ever got from a working man (as in, someone working with their hands) was when I was heavily p/g. Took a load of rubbish to our local tip and the guy told his mate to 'fetch the lady a chair, can't you see she's in a predicament'.

My favourite market stall holder, on the other hand, pointed at my bump, held up his hands in horror, and said 'It's not one of mine'! Cheeky sod.

Sidge · 14/04/2008 20:41

I quite like being called sweetheart, love, pet etc as long as it's on the right context (ie not by the bank manager!)

Can't stand being called dear though, a lot of my elderly patients call me that and it sets my teeth on edge.

Sidge · 14/04/2008 20:42

LOL at "in a predicament"!

ranting · 14/04/2008 20:43

Think it's an association thing though isn't it? I hate sweetheart because I used to work with a creepy dirty old man type who called every female 'sweetheart' in a smarmy voice.

Janos · 14/04/2008 20:45

I thinks it's pretty harmless, but I REALLY dislike being referred to as a girl when I am obviously not.

ranting · 14/04/2008 20:47

Yeah girl is just bleurgh, hate it, I'm not that far off forty and people still refer to me as the little girl.

Janos · 14/04/2008 20:50

I am 33 and although I've been told I look younger than my age I'm still very obviously a grown woman.

I think that's why 'girl' is so irritating. Also, it has patronising connotations.

Little girl would just make me want to scream!

HereComeTheGirls · 15/04/2008 07:05

I have never felt so old in my life as when a young (fit) barman called me "my dear" like I was about 80

maidamess · 15/04/2008 07:21

I loathe being called 'madam'. I'd rather be called 'darlin' any day!
