Aibu to seek an ex-pat community as I want to move somewhere English speaking?

I live in Ireland and the weather gets me down. I want to move to somewhere with better weather but I would prefer if it was mostly English speaking. I would consider Cornwall or south England in general.
I think the weather in London is fantastic but I find it huge and exhausting and really expensive.
I would prefer somewhere mellower but also with a community that was a mix of nationalities. I was also considering France or Italy. I don’t like Spain. Does anyone have any ideas?

The weather in London is not fantastic! What will you do for work, I would start from there.

Werweisswohin · 03/08/2024 07:19

Why don't you even want to attempt to learn the language?

Tommeetippee · 03/08/2024 07:20

The weather in Cornwall is similar to Ireland, very wet.

cupcaske123 · 03/08/2024 07:21

Seattle.

Zanatdy · 03/08/2024 07:22

The weather in london is better than other parts of the U.K., as I’ve lived in the north and the south. But it’s not fantastic, it rains a lot, the sun doesn’t come out that often. It’s an amazing city though, but very expensive to live in

newnamethanks · 03/08/2024 07:26

You must mean a different London from the soggy place we know and love. It rains.not as much as in Ireland but more than enough to make you fed up. Try S Europe.

Truetoself · 03/08/2024 07:26

@cupcaske123 Seattle? Doesn't it rain most of the year?

Laparisienne123 · 03/08/2024 07:28

Dordogne and other rural areas in France.

Nursemumma92 · 03/08/2024 07:29

Definitely not Cornwall if you're after good weather. France or Italy would be far better.

mapotofu · 03/08/2024 07:31

Why did you think you're being unreasonable at all? If I'm looking to move to mainland Europe, the main thing I'll make sure is that the place is fairly international and English-speaking. It'll be extremely isolating otherwise.

Italy is one of the wettest countries in Europe.

Dordogne and other rural areas in France.

I live just north of the Dordogne and last winter it started raining on 18th October and it rained almost constantly for 7 and a half months.

We do however live in a village which is 70% owned by brits. Mostly holiday homes. So it is very quiet most of the year. But you are more likely to hear English spoken than French.

We are an outlier as most of the permanent brits here are introverted. We love it.

OneForTheToad · 03/08/2024 07:38

I hear the south/mid east coast of the uk and Kent are the driest places.

Lacdulancelot · 03/08/2024 07:39

As @AlisonDonut says we’ve had a really wet 7 months in France.

If you move to Eymet in the Dordogne there are many English people.
Further north is a small town called Verteillac and the mayor there is very pro English speakers.

The French in that area like English speakers and are generally very welcoming.
However the most exhausting thing about living in France is the bureaucracy, tax, health etc all require at least basic French. Although we have friends whose French is abysmal and they seem to manage.
It’s ridiculously hot atm though, I’d love a week in the low 20’s with some rain too.

Yes I know the dordogne well. I think the weather is better in south Dordogne but it’s not beautiful green countryside for nothing. Though it has rained everywhere this year including in Paris.

Singapore?
its classic expat territory.

It’s hot, your overpaidhas and everyone has cheap maid servants and a low level drink problem from all the socialising.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 03/08/2024 07:43

There's Scilly, Malta and some parts of Spain.

mugboat · 03/08/2024 07:45

I grew up in NWest England and moved to London partially for the weather. I agree with you OP, rhe weather is mostly fantastic when you compare it with other areas.

If the climate in your part of Ireland is similar to where I came from, London is definitely an upgrade.

Those saying otherwise have no idea what its like to live in an area where it is windy and rainy all of the time😆.

I love it here in London too, I guess it all depends on where can get work.

Cornwall is beautiful but it's not easy to get work. London is expensive but often the jobs pay more than the rest of the country. Most of us who work in London commute in from the suburbs. Post pandemic, many of us work hybrid and only need to travel in 2/3 days a week.

She is considering Italy and according to the statistics, Italy has had less rainfall than France where OP is also considering, but thanks.

are you making a joke here? or do you really think it's cool to move to a county so you can take advantage of cheap domestic labour?

PetrichorSoul · 03/08/2024 07:48

I’m in Switzerland and you can get by with English only. Especially in Geneva where I live. Everyone speaks English because the expat community is huge.

You will pick up the language when you live in a place where it’s widely spoken. Forget about Italy, you have to learn Italian as many don’t speak English.

Poppypops76 · 03/08/2024 07:52

Portugal is beautiful and the weather on the Algarve is generally good all year round. Lots of expats too and English spoken everywhere.

OneForTheToad · 03/08/2024 07:55

Depends if the OP has to work or not I suppose. Try finding work in the Dordogne or Italy.

You'll start learning the language of the country too though, right?
