Kids suncream what is the best in hot countries?

AIBU to think no kids suncream is going to do its job?

We go to Egypt in 3 weeks and I am stocking up on what we need but I am really not sure what suncream will be best for my ginger and fair hair kids.

We have only experienced heat of up to 26 degrees or so in the past so I was preparing to stock up on the best expensive suncreams but reading reviews on boots all the kids creams have some negative reviews. I wanted the soltan once ones but now I'm not sure.

Any advice or recommendations please?

I don't want the mist spray and will apply every 2 hours when outside or swimming.

Thanks.

I prefer the invisible zinc / mineral sunscreens. Good for sensitive skin and young children. They also provide protection from when they applied instead of needing to wait until they are absorbed.

Lidl's Cien sunscreen has been rated highly by which.

I've tried a lot of different brands on my dc due to prickly heat/ sensitive skin. The best I've found is Ultra sun extreme heat factor 50 (red and white bottle). My dc did not burn or get prickly head recently in Cyprus at 40 degrees.

Altruist. Was developed by a dermatologist, has a 5 star UVA rating and is a really good price.

This. Brilliant stuff.

Simonjt · 06/08/2024 08:15

Its suncream, not hot cream, you don’t need a lower factor on a cooler day.

Remember suncream isn’t designed to be used alone, so whatever brand you go making them wear a wide brimmed hat, sleeves, rash vets etc at the beach is just as important as wearing suncream.

Any spf 50 is fine, the key is making sure you’re actually applying enough and often enough, a lot of people don’t use enough when they apply it.

Feckingflagseverywhere · 06/08/2024 08:16

You’re absolutely nuts to take small children to Egypt in August. It’ll be very unpleasant, uncomfortable and the children will be unhappy and whiny. Stay indoors with the air con on if you have to go, but don’t expose them to the sun.

Businessflake · 06/08/2024 08:19

if your kids have sensitive skin the only one my DC2 can tolerate without getting a rash is Child’s Farm, although it is pricey. I also don’t think it’s as waterproof as some of the others so we reapply (even more) frequently.

OP you mentioned one child won’t wear a sun suit. With fair skin not used to so much sun I would really recommend you keep them in the shade as much as possible then. Even SPF 50’is unlikely to cut it for a long period of sun exposure.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 06/08/2024 08:20

I find some of the cheaper brands are false economy as they either absorb too quickly into the skin that you need too much for good coverage or they take too long to rub in and leave a horrible white cast on skin which then just proceeds to rub off on the first surface it comes in contact with.

Nivea I think are consistently good and as soon as I smell it I immediately think holidays Grin

Ultrasun is a fantastic range.
I've used their face and sports gel and never burnt. Not tried their kids offerings but no reason to suspect its not as good.

Notmydaughteryoubitch · 06/08/2024 08:31

I have just come back from the south of France and it was so hot we struggled with the heat - the idea of Egypt in the summer with fair haired children- bannanas! Anyhoo as pp said the best sun protection is to keep them out of the sun for large parts of the day when the sun is at its height, when in the sun ensure long armed UV swimsuit and hat (ideally legionnaire style to protect back of neck too) and factor 50 - doesn't really matter which the other bits are the priority.

mitogoshi · 06/08/2024 08:38

Factor 50 in whatever brand you can afford lots of, liberally applying is the key. Lidl and Aldi own brand are good. Better is to stay out of the sun between 11 and 3, wear a t shirt or rash vest and a hat on the beach, and generally be careful

mitogoshi · 06/08/2024 08:41

Sports direct had rash tops last week, or decathlon if near you

Topbird29 · 06/08/2024 08:46

@Sundayz - mountain warehouse or next are good for rash vests with quick delivery.

Boopbeepbeepboop · 06/08/2024 08:50

We always use superdrug kids for my daughter. She has severe eczema and really gets on with this one. I apply it multiple times a day and she wears a UV swim suit which is an absolute not negotiable for us. She is 4, your kids might be older and not want that lol

Ineedaholidayyyy · 06/08/2024 09:31

We buy the unsafe outfits from Next normally, but any cover up is better than nothing, whatever he was tollerate.

For a fair skinned ginger haired child, shade is a must and keep him out of the midday sun, although I'm sure you know that already. I must admit, I though Egypt is an unusual choice in August with fair skinned ginger children. Good luck

jolota · 06/08/2024 11:12

For swimming we did a sized up all in one sunsafe swim suit, so it wasn't a super tight fit for comfort
Tesco + Aldi sun cream have both been good for our daughter
We always make her wear a hat too
We also cover with clothes as much as possible, loose long sleeved tops, loose fitting trousers etc

3WildOnes · 06/08/2024 11:32

We use Ultrasun and apply a few time a day despite it bring 'once a day'.
Definitely rash vests.
Pool/beach in the morning. Then back to the room for a play at 11 before lunch. After lunch nap or film and then back to the pool beach for late afternoon.
Egypt is great in the Easter or October holidays, in future I would avoid in summer!

specialk9 · 06/08/2024 11:54

We use isdin spray kids factor 50. Excellent but I imagine most factor 50s with a good UVA rating will suffice unless you need to cover sensitive skin.

We use rash vests (Next) and hats (when they will keep them on)

MissTrip82 · 06/08/2024 11:59

We’re in Australia so different brands and use reef safe ones but nobody in this house can go out in the sun without a hat and shirt - rash vest in the water.

Physical barriers are essential.

Notcms · 06/08/2024 12:40

Next or mountain warehouse for sun suits & rash vests.

Can you recommend any in particular please?

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 06/08/2024 12:47

Mine has a long sleeve sunsafe top from Asda and so far it's been great. Thats been in the US last summer where it was c40 degrees, plus European holidays.
Just bought a T shirt style one from Next for mornings, she always wears the long sleeve after lunch if a pool day.
I read on here about taking isotonic tablets to add to water too to help replenish salts lost to sweat, we'll be doing that for Greece, also cooling towels for round your neck, not used but looking into.

www.boots.com/garnier-ambre-solaire-spf-50-sensitive-advanced-kids-anti-sand-mist-150ml-10323723

We've used this for years (and the adult equivalent), nothing else compares. Brilliant stuff.

Kids suncream what is the best in hot countries?
Cyclingforcake · 06/08/2024 12:52

We use P20 in the morning all over and wait 20 mins for it to dry before dressing. Helps avoid the staining. Then Aldi cream over the top in the middle of the day/after swimming. Never been burnt and we are a family of ginger vampires. P20 doesn’t work instantly so no point applying it like normal suncream.
we actually catch the sun less in very hot climates as we’re inside from 11-3 as too hot to be out.
