Kids suncream what is the best in hot countries?

AIBU to think no kids suncream is going to do its job?

We go to Egypt in 3 weeks and I am stocking up on what we need but I am really not sure what suncream will be best for my ginger and fair hair kids.

We have only experienced heat of up to 26 degrees or so in the past so I was preparing to stock up on the best expensive suncreams but reading reviews on boots all the kids creams have some negative reviews. I wanted the soltan once ones but now I'm not sure.

Any advice or recommendations please?

I don't want the mist spray and will apply every 2 hours when outside or swimming.

Thanks.

La Roche Posay anthelios dermo-pediatrics factor 50+, water resistant but not greasy. I also use it because I have fair sensitive skin. Used to use child's farm but it was a bit greasy and sweats off.
LRP is cheapest on myorigines a french pharmacy with online sales

I travelled a lot with kids, one very fair. Boots Soltan has been excellent but I also use the factor 50 sun tops in the sea. My very fair boy got sun through them ! But didn't burn. So sun top, factor and shade unless actually swimming. It all depends on skin tone,I have another boy who never burns even with 30

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 05/08/2024 22:18

We do usually put ds in long sleeve rash vest and jammer type SPF50 swimwear too

longdistanceclaraclara · 05/08/2024 22:18

I'm allergic to pretty much everything m. Nivea blue bottle up to factor 50 and clear and
Bronze spray works for us.

longdistanceclaraclara · 05/08/2024 22:19

We all wear rash vests as well.

I use Boots Soltan once https://www.boots.com/soltan-kids-once-trigger-spray-spf50and-250ml-10341941 for my boys. Have done for years and it’s been really good. It’s supposed to last all day but I do reapply it every 3 hours or so to be safe.

Highly recommended the Soltan once 8hr including 3hr in the water. We normally do reapply it once in the day but we never burn. We are currently away in 35°c sunshine and it's working well.

We lived in Malaysia for 3 years, my dds face would fried in minutes in the midday sun. We used and trusted La Roche Posay sun cream.

BotterMon · 05/08/2024 22:23

Reimann's P20 in factor 50. Been using it for 30+ years. Apply all over and let dry. Do same after lunch. Important to let it dry before putting clothes on but it doesn't stain yellow like it used to. DD used in Africa and never burnt.

I'd use total sunblock on their faces as P20 in the eyes stings like hell.

Noidea2024 · 05/08/2024 22:23

We use Ultrasun factor 50 and nobody even tanned when we went no Florida. As long as it's put on before going out in the sun, and allowed to dry, it stays put, proves highly waterproof and nobody reacted to it.

Ineedaholidayyyy · 05/08/2024 22:25

Another vote for Aldi. I've found it to be just as good as any expensive brand I've used.

Also you can buy UV resistant rash vests/ swimsuits, next normally do a decent range.

Colddipinthemorning · 05/08/2024 22:25

For faces, I'd always use Avène, usually this one:

www.avene.co.uk/p/spf-50-cream-3282770149487-b5405ca4

We live in a hot country, and I'm very fair-skinned. I've never burnt using it, not even a freckle! Children love it as although it's quite thick, it rubs in really quickly and doesn't sting eyes. Plus it's water resistant. For bodies, I'd keep them covered up with UV protective clothes and any decent factor 50.

bigTillyMint · 05/08/2024 22:26

We were in Egypt in 2012 when the Olympics were on here!

Rashies saved a whole load of suncream woes, but we also used factor 50 waterproof - Nivea IIRC!

SaltAndVinegar2 · 05/08/2024 22:26

If your children are fair skinned they need at least their torso and shoulders covered and down as far as the knees, when around water in the sun. Ideally a hat too at least intermittently.

For peace of mind I would go for long arms and legs.

If they won't cover their shoulders I would limit to 30 minutes in the pool between 11 and 3 and stay indoors otherwise between these times. It doesn't need to be a swim suit, any t shirt will protect from sun. Does your son really never wear anything on his top half?

Aldi suncream is good - go for factor 50, 5 star UV, apply a really thick layer.

Yes we use this too! We top up with just the regular soltan spray mist and I use the La Roche Posay anthelios invisible mist for face top ups. It’s amazing and can go over makeup. I’m a pale redhead who doesn’t tan and I never get burnt.

I agree with others though, suncream isn’t enough in that kind of climate. You have to combine it with hats, sunglasses and then shade and coverups during peak hours.

SpiritAdder · 05/08/2024 22:26

Long sleeve rash vest and leggings or a wetsuit to swim in,
Eucerin spf100 actinic fluid
Only going outside before 10am or after 3pm

S00LA · 05/08/2024 22:33

Use any of the factor 50 kids , because it’s more water resistant. Cream not clear spray.

20 mins before you go out after breakfast , apply quite thickly so you can see it on the skin and let it soak in.

make them wear rash vests , pref long sleeves, swim shorts, hats and sunglasses.

bring them inside before noon and make them stay inside until about 3. Then do the cream again before they go outside again .

accept that all their pool clothes will get ruined with sun cream . It’s cheaper than skin cancer .

Hankunamatata · 05/08/2024 23:04

Mine are sensory but weirdly love an all in one swimsuit from decathlon. We also use their sport sunscreen when surfing as its very water resistant

Sundayz · 05/08/2024 23:10

Thank you so much everyone it's really helpful hearing what everybody does.

Looks like I need to do a last minute sunsafe shop as I am hearing this is essential and ds will have to just get used to it.

Any recommendations for where to get sunsafe top from? I remember years ago hearing Asda / Sainsbury's and such like don't have the sun protection material, is that still the case? I am near shops I can get to thankfully.

Thank you.

Boots soltan is the best

We were in Cyprus in June, when there was a heatwave, and it was over 40 degrees. We used Boots Soltan kids cream (the normal one, not once) and it was brilliant. They never burned.
I would also recommend a good cover up though. We had to buy a long sleeved swim top and shorts for my daughter, as the sun was so strong. Usually she'd wear a swimming costume, but she was catching the sun too quickly. Both kids wore hats the whole time too, even in the pool. The ones that come with swimwear, that are made of the same material as a swimming costume. Think they're called kelpi hats.

user68712226 · 06/08/2024 04:13

I’d also recommend thinking about taking some games or something. Being inside between 11 and 3/4 is quite a long period. Kids clubs can be useful for this if there is one.

HaveYouSeenRain · 06/08/2024 04:22

You absoluty need to stay inside during the lunch heat. I am in a hot country now and a few people and kids had heatstrokes there. Go to the beach and early morning and mid afternoon/evening.
Buy sun hats and UV tops (Mountain Warehouse is cheap), Soltan is good enough as a cream, I always use 50.

Fully agree w this. Same here.
