to think these people in Sunderland are not "protesting".

They are not protestors. They are not protesting. They are common or garden thugs and criminals who are causing criminal damage, setting police offices on fire and attacking police officers.

Total scumbags.

I'm actually feeling sick to the stomach today. Scared, upset and depressed at what's happening to my country.”

Nothing is happening to your country. A minuscule minority of useful idiots is being manipulated by Farage and his ilk (who ought to be charged). Were it not the summer and slow UK news wise this wouldn’t be receiving so much attention from the 24 hour news channels that we now have, all desperate for content.
Most sensible UK citizens see it for what it is, a storm in a teacup, akin to the BNP nonsense of the past.
It’s telling that where these yobs have been met by counter-protest, the counter protesters far outnumber the dickheads.

Disagree. Thousands of people are involved in violent disorder in several towns and cities. Police are unable to keep control of the streets. This is terrible and would always be newsworthy whatever else is going on. It's unprecedented as previous large scale rioting was due to black people being killed but now it's the opposite.

Fenham has got a lot of affluent people there, as well as deprived areas. It also has two mosques, in the area, one off the West Road, in Benwell, just across from the General Hospital.

They are likely to be targetting those.

It won't be well received if they do. I live in Fenham and it's a really diverse area with an excellent community feel. It's one of the things that makes Fenham such a great place to live and the mosque is very well integrated into the local community. When people say multiculturalism isn't working, I often think they must be seeing something very different to me - we have churches (including polish and. Greek Orthodox), mosques, a Hindu temple and a gurdwara all within a couple of miles of each other and it all works perfectly fine.

Bollocks, these facist riots have nothing to do with the deaths of those poor children, and using their deaths in this way in disgusting.
It's disrespectful to the children, their memories, their families and friends to use them in this way.

I have never been to Fenham, but there an amazing Bakery there ( seen on Instagram) which I would like to visit. I like food.
I will admit I thought Benwell and Elswick were deprived.
But my area deprived then two minutes walk away completely different!
On Facebook, The fire station has music on and people look like they are having a great time. It looked such a great addition to the city.

EmeraldRoulette · 04/08/2024 23:50

@MrsSkylerWhite how many areas need to have riots before you feel worried? The number being reported won’t be all of them and even the reported number is very high.

I realise some people won’t be worried at all though.

SinnerBoy · 05/08/2024 00:03

FAB - Fine Artisan Bread, on Fenham Hall Drive is the bakery.

It’s not the number of areas that matter but the number of “protestors”.
Very few, in all of these places. Couple of hundred at most. Couple of dozen in some places. In Blackpool for example, near to our town, there were a few dozen. Who were quickly seen off by many more (older and wiser) people attending a punk rock festival in town 😁

FAB bakery is well worth a visit but get there quite early because they sell out quickly.

Benwell, Elswick and Scotswood are tricky areas. They've historically been pretty deprived and when I was a kid were known for being quite rough for want of a better word and they had the riots there in the early 90s I think it was. Yet I had friends who lived there and their families liked the area and said it had a nice community feel.

Benwell and Elswick have still got a reputation and have became much more diverse since then - used to have a large Asian community and still does alongside people from Libya, Eastern Europeans etc. I hadn't been there for years then had to work in a school in benwell for a few weeks and also joined a baby group also in benwell and actually the area seems to have a lovely vibe to it now. I'm happy to be corrected, as I'm just basing it on a few visits, but it seems much more similar to Fenham now but without the wealthy areas.

Initial turn out at Albert Park in Middlesbrough was getting in for 1000. That's a lot more than a dozen.

Fair enough. Population of Middlesbrough is upwards of 150,000 🤷‍♀️

I remember when the Sikh Temple was first opened, just off the top of Westgate Hill / Big Lamp. It had paint thrown and the windows smashed - late 80s.

There was me thinking times were better, now.

I don't think the kind of people that burn down libraries, go to libraries.

I don't think the kind of people that burn down libraries, go to libraries.

I can just see it now...
' wots this? '
' dunno, think it's a book '
' can't be, it's not got any pictures in it'
' you're right, give us your lighter '

Joking aside, the people has worked really hard for a long time to set up that library. They relied on donated books and things to open it for the benefit of their community, which those mindless yobs destroyed.
Maybe when all this has died down, the mumsnetters who have spare books, like the poster with 21 boxes of them last week, could donate them to this worthwhile cause to get it up and running again, or perhaps to other similar schemes.
I hope when they get the thugs to court, that the sentences are severe.

I just donated to 'Books for Spellow Lane' to help repair our library and replenish books for the kids. Every bit helps! Please donate, like, comment, and share to spread the word

Don't be so utterly ridiculous. The Newcastle protest isn't planned until Saturday 10th. Let's hope for Newcastle's sake that the country has calmed down by then.

Rather than being ‘utterly ridiculous’ I was referring to the quote that there was to be riots/marches the following day. There was no mention of next week.
Im sure the protestors will be glad you’ve given them prior knowledge of where and when to loot next!

I can understand that as a general policy but it seems a bit harsh to block a link to an appeal for funds for a burnt down library.

Who in their right mind would report that?

It won't have been reported- the link triggers the message to be hidden instead of being posted. I only know this because it happened to me, too!

I wonder if these 'lovely boys' realise that once the Home Office has a word with the phone providers that EVERYONE carrying a mobile will have their location tracked down to the nearest 10 Metres thus being pretty strong evidence for or against anyone's presence at these events. Something the Stazi could never have dreamed about in times gone by but now all too possible, even if the authorities can't or don't read the actual messages sent.
Me? I was having a peaceful Sunday lunch overlooking a pretty lake in the French countryside. Since the security services across Europe have tabs on almost everybody it will be interesting to see how many of the persons involved in the UK disturbances receive visits from the Police in the coming days and WHERE they put those arrested as the prisons are generally pretty full at the moment.

Xenia · 05/08/2024 13:58

Facial recognition software will also be in operation and I do wish the police would force everyone covering faces on pro Palestine marches and this current violent illegal disorder to remove the covering as it is now against the law to cover faces on marches and we need to apply that rule to all without fear or favour.
