Disagree with communal fridge

Our neighbour, we shall call them “neighbour X” recentl started a discussion on the street WhatsApp about needing a communal fridge so anyone on the street can store excess fridge stuff over the summer. Everyone chipped in and “neighbour x” bought the fridge.

I am starting to get a bit miffed about it all, as firstly the fridge is kept at neighbour Xs house, which means they kind of control it. Secondly, we needed to use it recently to store excess drinks as we were having people over. Guess what, it was full so no use at all.

What has really annoyed me is that I have since heard it was mainly full due to neighbour X filling it with their own stuff. I am feeling really annoyed that we chipped in £50 for something we cannot even use when we need it. AIBU?

This was a foolish decision op. Wave goodbye to your £50 and chalk it up to experience.

nutella8 · 02/08/2024 21:57

Totally bonkers, thanks for the chuckle

JelloOfInfiniteFest · 02/08/2024 22:02

Is this the fridge?

VividQuoter · 02/08/2024 22:09

this is why i am not on any school, community, street, church, you name it what's app. Only work ones because it is money for me and at the end of the day I am happy to come home, close the door and not care who is doing what out there.

My piece of a fridge in someone elses house. NO WAY.

Cocobeau · 02/08/2024 22:13

So much weirdness in one post

RLouiseH · 02/08/2024 22:13

I am starting to get a bit miffed about it all, as firstly the fridge is kept at neighbour Xs house, which means they kind of control it.

Well when you first agreed to this deal, did you not know this? Surely before paying you knew where it was going to be kept. So that’s on you.

I mean this whole thing is absolutely absurd. I just don’t know why you’d agree to this or what you were expecting.

But if you genuinely are asking for advice about this bizzare scenario, I’d be knocking on the neighbours door asking for my money back if I can’t store my food in it. Don’t be taken for a mug.

Viviennemary · 02/08/2024 22:15

It was a mad idea. Just buy a bigger fridge for yourself if you need more storage.

Zanatdy · 02/08/2024 22:19

What a bizarre set up. The person who has the fridge in their garage etc need to ensure that there’s space if someone wants to use it, a shelf each etc, otherwise it’s totally unfair. Seems an absolute crazy idea to start with, your neighbour got themselves an overflow fridge that their neighbours paid for!

TwinklyNight · 02/08/2024 22:21

That was a stupid idea from the get go.
Get yourself a second fridge or a Styrofoam cooler for keeping drinks cold when you need extra cold drinks for company.

Mayorq · 02/08/2024 22:22

May as well have chipped in for a communal en suite

Bertsmum22 · 02/08/2024 22:22

What?! So you have to take things over to hers and put them in and ask when you need them?! This is so weird!!

paradisecircus · 02/08/2024 22:24

YANBU, but as you've donated £50 I think you have a right to be assertive about wanting some space in the fridge

betterangels · 02/08/2024 22:31

I'm not sure why anyone thought that was a good idea. You've basically all bought your neighbour new fridge. Bizarre.

Beautiful3 · 02/08/2024 22:32

How many neighbours is it for? How are they all going to store stuff in it?! I presume most of you all would want the fridge part, for wine/beers/pop and bbq meat. Sounds to me like you've all paid, for your neighbour to get a second fridge!

PracticalLady · 02/08/2024 22:39

My first thought is, is everyone being charged for the running costs? It's a very strange idea and no, you are not being unreasonable.

PorridgeEater · 02/08/2024 22:45

What a silly idea. Not at all surprising this doesn't work - have to write the £50 off to experience I suppose.

Hereforthesandwiches · 02/08/2024 22:54

Bizarro. I wouldn't want to share a fridge with my neighbours. What a weird idea.

Rubyupbeat · 02/08/2024 22:54

Sorry, but I don't believe this is true. Absolutely unworkable.

pocketaces · 02/08/2024 22:54

Ok so it's either

A) This is a joke. Fair play to OP for thinking of it. Comedy gold!!

B) It's actually true but OP is so embarrassed by her own stupidity she's disappeared never to comment again

PyongyangKipperbang · 02/08/2024 22:59

So she wanted a second fridge, couldnt afford it and decided to get you bunch of muppets to pay for it?

Saw you coming didnt she? I suggest that you post on WA that as none of can actually use said fridge because its full of her stuff, and you cant access it when you want even if it isnt full, she pays you all back and keeps it as her private property.

Summerbay23 · 02/08/2024 23:01

YABU because this sounds ridiculous, I’ve never heard of sharing a fridge.

echt · 02/08/2024 23:03

Unbelievable situation. Literally.

caringcarer · 02/08/2024 23:05

Weird.

Salumthecat · 02/08/2024 23:18

EatTheGnome · 02/08/2024 21:01

Best post ever.

I have so many questions 🤣

How many people is "everyone"?

If you paid £50, how big is the fridge?

Did you get a receipt?

Do you own a percentage?

Do you pay towards electricity and is it covered under home insurance if the electricity goes out?

How are repair costs allocated?

Does the fridge move house?

Did you get a say in the colour?

Is there a vegetarian section?

What happens if food goes past its best before date?

How do you arrange access?

What happens after summer?

How is food identified? Post it note? Shelf?

Do you have a communal cleaner?

I posted asking similar questions, sadly I don’t think OP will be returning to answer.

It’s so disappointing when someone starts a thread and disappears without answering any questions - especially one as bizarre as this. I’m guessing we’ll all be left wondering and thinking about this forever…

I would book my shelf for Christmas now if I were you OP.

I suspect they’ll have no chance especially once the man storing it gets his turkey in there!!
