To think this is great but can't be right (Premium Bonds )

We were left some money and so bought £5,000 in Premium Bonds last September. We had nearly £1,000 already so total was just under £6,000.

So, in the last year we have won a total of £1,925 (inc this August) which is a % return of about 30%.

It's amazing, obviously, but can't be normal can it? 😂

Hope I haven't jinxed it now

I've won far more money on mine than I could have made in any savings account.
I have £22,500 and win at least £50 per month, some months £100 and intermittent £200, £300 and a couple of £500’s!
I love draw day 😊

Eeepsh · 02/08/2024 16:18

Draw day is fun isn't it? Is it sad that I know my holder number by heart!!

I have 15k in and won nothing 😒 is this also normal for some people?

Mousefoot · 02/08/2024 16:20

I have £50k and have a return of nearly 4% so far this year, which I'm very pleased with, tax free. You've been very lucky 🙂

years ago my dad was looking into investments, and his financial advisor said to put the maximum in premium bonds because the average rate of return was way better than any APR they would get with the potential for a lot more.

And boy did it work - over about 15 years he got 3 really big prizes.

Tel12 · 02/08/2024 16:23

Our return is currently 4%. Obviously not everyone's getting 30! Live in hope!

SunOnTheRiver · 02/08/2024 16:23

I think you are getting my share @Eeepsh as my return is woeful

Hotgirlwinter · 02/08/2024 16:23

Youve been lucky to have such great returns on “smaller” holdings. I think the average is much more around the 5% like pp has had, that is similar to what I’ve read previously and also had back myself.

But fingers crossed your luck continues and you carry on getting such amazing results! And send some this way too 🤣

Polarnight · 02/08/2024 16:24

OK so can you take it out any time or are there penalties?

BloominHeather · 02/08/2024 16:24

Well I'm trying to build up my Premium Bond holding but I'm only up to almost £2000.
Not won anything yet but I'm living in hope!

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 02/08/2024 16:25

I've had bonds for 12 years and never won anything!

Anytime, but it can take a couple days to get the cash

Yes you can take it out at any time without penalty.

HungryWombat · 02/08/2024 16:26

Wow we aren't winning like that! The odd 25 over 4 years!!!

I want some of this luck.

burnoutbabe · 02/08/2024 16:27

i have the full amount and make around the 4% average rate.

but if you have less, then you will either make a lot more than average or a lot less.

Eeepsh · 02/08/2024 16:27

Polarnight · 02/08/2024 16:24

You can take it out anytime @Polarnight

ok, so I'm obviously taking more than my share - (sorry, not sorry!!) off to buy a lottery ticket before my luck runs out.

I’ve never won anything on Premium Bonds, but then I’ve never won anything anywhere at all.

I have about £75,000 in a non isa savings account and it earns about £221 a month interest. It gets taxed as I'm a higher rate tax payer and I've used the £500 allowance in 2.5 months.

Would I be better with that amount in premium bonds?

FelineGood76 · 02/08/2024 16:31

We have 45k in bonds, get average 100 per month. A few months ago it was 1.5k.
Actually invested because of the good things I had read on Mumsnet! So far it's turned out to be true.

BeyondMyWits · 02/08/2024 16:31

We have 9000, growing by 250 per month.

We have won £75 this "year"... we do a rolling 12 month tally. Not great... but 12 months ago we had over £1000 on a lower total investment. It is random.

CheeseWisely · 02/08/2024 16:32

Amazing OP! DH and I bought £5k between us last year and had our first winnings today, £50!

Not quite your level of luck but better than a poke in the eye! I love draw day (well, I love the anticipation of draw day!) Grin

You can "only" have a max of £50k in PBs.

You're getting about 3.5%, the prize fund for PBs is 4.4% , but that's not the expected return because it'S not spread evenly between holders, some months you'll likely get nothing, others more.

Winnings are tax free though. No one can say you'd be better off, but I'd move the £50k in your shoes. Actually I'd probably look at investing some of it, but if you want to keep it in cash, I'd move to PBs.

Same 😓

This has reminded me to try again to get my money out (they didn't action it the last twice I asked).
They're a nightmare to deal with and in 30 years I haven't won a penny.

I do all my transacting with them online. It's very straightforward
