what sort of wedding band would fit with this engagement ring?

Would like some suggestions or input from those more savvy than me about jewellery as I am struggling to find a wedding band that can fit alongside my wedding ring. It is a low setting so I can't really get anything that will sit underneath it, as it were, unless very thin indeed. If I go for a thicker band then it sits so far below my engagement ring and leaves a large gap.

Is a spacer ring an option? Wear it on a different hand? Any other ideas?

I would prefer to avoid a wedding band that has an atypical shape or one that is designed to fit around the ring as I would like something more traditional.

My daughter has precisely the same problem. Some of the “atypical” wedding rings are quite pretty - you can get one that has diamonds in the curvy bit under the ring. If you are dead set on a traditional shape, then get whichever wedding ring you like best, and once married, wear your engagement ring on your other hand. Then get DH to buy you smoother, flatter ring to go with your wedding ring as an anniversary/ first baby/ significant birthday present.

You need to pop to a jewellers who make rings to order.

I had an engagement ring with an odd shape and had a jeweller make my wedding ring to fit and, then, a bit later, an eternity ring when I had DC.

PangolinPan · 02/08/2024 15:26

My ring is that sort of shape but the band is hammered flat in such a way that it lies flat against a wedding band. It may be that the band can be adjusted or wear a spacer.

JudgeBurrito · 02/08/2024 15:28

Yeah just go into an independent jeweller's and ask their advice. It's quite a big engagement ring so maybe a thin wedding band would look nice. You'll want something in the same metal though so the softer metal doesn't wear.

Ah, I did not know about this as a potential issue. It is platinum so yes I will now need to ensure that any band is also in platinum.

Thank you for this. I know I mentioned a spacer in my OP but I have not seen a spacer before. Is it just any ring used for the purpose of spacing or is it a specific category / type of ring?

I am still not sure about the other shapes, but I will keep an open mind during the search.

I like your suggestion re a smoother flatter ring later down the line. Will consider this.

I had a similar problem so just changed the engagement ring to the other hand and had my wedding band with tiny diamonds in it.

I don't know that it is as big as it looks in the photo. I think I just have fairly large hands!

I mean it's got a large diameter, as opposed to being like a little solitaire diamond that's easier to pair with a wedding ring. It's quite Kate Middleton, what sort of wedding ring did she go for? (Just googled and it looks like hers sits under the engagement ring but is very thin)

My friends spacer is a thin gold ring from an antiques/cheap shop with a space that the jewel fits in C shaped rather than O, then her wedding ring is under that. Just means that her wedding ring can lie flat.

This seems like my best bet so far I think. Thanks

Oh I see, yes I suppose it does. Just had a look at hers as well - she seems to have chosen a thin and relatively inconspicuous band. I think this might be the way to go. Similar ish style. Thanks for your suggestions.

you can buy wedding rings to shape round your engagement ring.

pic attached is of gemset wedding bands but you can have them made just plain.

cropped so a bit peculiar!

I am just not a fan of these sort of shaped wedding bands and would prefer something more classic. Thank you for your suggestion anyway!

Concerned about the way it will look when worn independently of my engagement ring, is what I meant.

Some inspiration here but they are more contemporary in style.

Two wedding rings [bit pricey in platinum but cheaper than gem set] one to wear with a recess to fit your beautiful emerald, and a second band for occasions when you don't want to wear your engagement ring.

These are truly beautiful! A little out of our price range though. Good food for thought, I guess I could always ask a jeweller to make something similar

have you tried on a normal band? Sometimes it will just work together and the cluster will go over the band naturally.

tried to show you but I can’t take a very good photo! Edited to add that my engagement ring is not very tight so I can get my wedding band under so sizing could cure your issue of things not fitting beneath.

Different shape but had same problem. A jeweller made the wedding ring which is attached to the engagement ring so all in one now.

Wow what a beautiful ring! I like this very much. Yes I have tried on a couple and whilst they sort of fit, they don't fit as well as I would like. They rub.

Another fantastic idea. Thank you for your suggestion! 100% going to look into this. You have a lovely ring - I bet it's super sparkly with all those diamonds!
