To ask for your stories of when a horrible manager has actually come unstuck?

I have a truly horrible manager and the one above her is just as bad. They bully people, are always on a power trip and out to get the loveliest members of the team. I'm leaving this team in the autumn so I've sucked it up but this week has been really, really hard and I was hoping for your light hearted stories of a manager coming unstuck ( nothing too awful! I don't wish badly on people ) to cheer me up. I just want to know it's possible that people like this don't get away with it forever!

Not unstuck but what kept me sane was the knowledge that he thought he was loved by everyone when in reality no one could stand him. He was even given a nickname by people who worked with him in and out of the organisation. I won’t out myself by saying the real name but it’s along the same lines as
Dickhead Davis (made up) it was Dickhead but I am not saying the really last name.

When he was being an arse I just kept saying Dickhead Davis to myself. It helped. All the women also said he made their skin crawl and he thought he was gods gift.

My former manager was absolutely vile (as well as somewhat incompetent) and tried to blame me for decisions made by others whilst I was on mat leave. They were later involved in a professional scandal at work and left ‘to pursue other opportunities’. It is unclear whether other opportunities have actually arisen.

PeachBear · 02/08/2024 00:26

Sorry, no big 'stories' for you on bully boss comeuppance. I had a horrible line manager for a while and everyone in the office was so professional that it took me a long time to grasp that they all hated her too. That was a nice thing to know.

Dh had a vile editor in a newspaper. He shouted and swore a lot. When dtds were born prematurely and I’ve stopped breathing, he refused to allow dh family/emergency leave and refused paternity leave until the date they were due arrived. He did allow dh to be at the birth and have the full day as a good will gesture 😳🙄. they were making redundancies and he threatened dh with that and he was young and nervous so didn’t protest due to fear he’d lose his job.

About 8 months later he was accompanied from his office with no warning never to be seen again having been sacked for gross misconduct. We think it was something to do with expenses but never quite got the facts.

BehindTheSequinsandStilettos · 02/08/2024 01:00

First boss - awful. Do as I say, not as I do. Often unkind and also inept.
She'd got away with being awful for a long time, even though senior management were in the know. The rest of us had never officially made a complaint but morale was sometimes low in the department.
Met someone years later - their colleague (who tbh sounded just as awful) had stabbed first boss in the back, when they'd been off poorly. They made an official complaint then unlocked a cupboard, which apparently was a snapshot of the person's disorganisation. First boss was demoted as a result, having met her match.

My relative had worked at the same company for a few years when her manager left and was replaced by a bully. Over the next decade, the bully forced dozens of staff members out, usually when they were still new. The bully was also extremely lazy and left her staff to do almost all of the work. It took a very long time, but eventually the bully was caught committing fraud and sacked.

When I was a teenager working in Wimpy, of all places, my manager was an absolute twat. Literally had no life outside of Wimpy, would work all the hours he could. Money started going missing and for a short while upper management believed it was me, as it only happened on days I was working. But the only other person working on all those days was twat manager. Basically he was trying to frame me and look like the hero for finding the money hidden around the place all the time. Annoyingly I can’t remember how they clocked that it was him, but they did, and he was dismissed immediately. Little bellend.

DancelikeFredAstaire · 02/08/2024 06:17

I had a manager who, for reasons I still can't fathom, hated me. Every thing that went wrong was somehow my fault. I reported him for bullying but was told that until I had proof then nothing could be done. Anyway 1 day I was hauled up to his office where him, his boss and HR wanted to discuss a serious error with one of the orders that had been sent out. As my manager continued to blame me I asked when the mistake had happened to which he replied " 10 days ago". When I calmly pointed out that not only was I on A/L at the time I was half way across the world so how could I have possibly been at work when the mistake happened. Both his boss and HR looked at him and his boss asked him if it was true. Cue lots of spluttering and back tracking. I was told to leave the meeting but the next day was called back to HR to discuss the bullying accusations and the manager was demoted and moved to a different site. I left soon afterwards but the last I heard he had been sacked for "gross misconduct"

My ex-manager was an absolute head case and out of her depth. A truely unpleasant person who was a bully.

Before she came to my department some of her team came up with a genius idea to get rid of her. They all (say 15 team members) threatened to resign if she came back to her job after maternity leave - so she had to be shifted sideways. Anyway she thought this was hilarious and wasn't mortified!

She did try to bully me but I just grey rocked her until she got bored. Then I got promoted over her which drove her crazy. For years people reached out to me for advice on how to stand her.

Looking back she was living a very sad life outside of work. Not an excuse but an explanation

CormorantStrikesBack · 02/08/2024 06:37

The police turned up at work one day and arrested my manager and assistant manager for embezzling money out the company. Both went to prison, one is now a financial director for the local county council which makes me laugh.

another bullying manager was escorted out the building by security. She was vile, regularly made people cry. Someone whistleblew and after there was a fact finding set of interviews that was that, marched out and sacked.

ElfAndSafetyBored · 02/08/2024 06:59

One of mine was marched out of the building one morning, never to be seen again. It was great.

A family member had a boss who bullied her because she has refused his advances at a Christmas party. When she finally went to HR they told her lots of people has reported his behaviour on her behalf but that they needed her to do it. They sacked him on the spot.

Always report bullying behaviour to HR (if you have one) - if enough people do it, these people are more likely to get dealt with.

By chance, I was there the day my bully was escorted from the building.

I once had a manager who after being uncontactable for the day, a colleague and I made an executive decision, which he then decided was wrong. He took his glasses off and screamed in my face. I cried but didn’t leave.
I worked with his wife’s cousin who could obviously do no wrong, even when eating Thai soup for lunch and sweating and having a runny nose all over the office. 🤮
I once mentioned to a colleague that I thought he smelt of booze but he thought it was his aftershave. Spoke to HR about how much of an arse he was and they said it was ok because he occasionally took us out for breakfast. Eventually left.

Turns out he was a raging alcoholic who got caught drink driving and as a result lost his job. Literally couldn’t have happened to a nicer fella.

justpeachy1234 · 03/08/2024 14:56

A new boss decided they hated me from day 1. I was perviously very well liked/ valued.

I found out they were holding interviews to replace me (I wasn't leaving) while creating this narative about how incompetent I was. I assume they were planning to push me out. Luckily I knew someone who they offered an interview to and I was able to report it to HR.

I got a huge settlement to leave quietly.

I found out a few weeks later that the boss didn't pass probation and was sacked with no notice 🤣🤣🤣 the perfect karma!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 03/08/2024 15:06

I had a new boss who was much less experienced than me. I didn’t mind that, I was very happy in my post and didn’t even consider applying for hers.

She was a real ‘Do as I say, not as I do’ person. She was constantly on at me for not doing as much work as some of the others on the team - they were full time, I was 2.5 days a week and I was given a lot of the more complex work due to my experience.

She made my working life miserable. I recently left and now have a really lovely manager, several others have too. I’m still waiting for fate to bite her on the bum!

Lilysgoneshopping · 03/08/2024 15:06

Section leader at a retail outlet. Nasty Bully to younger staff members. I didn't like her but she never bullied me because I was about 20 years older than her and took no shit.
Turned out she had given a large refund to a friend on an item that we didn't even stock.
A few colleagues including me gave a quiet cheer when she was sacked 😁

Hedgesgalore · 03/08/2024 15:10

Dd had a part time job through uni. Her manager was vile to her and she'd frequently come home quiet and on the last occasion crying and upset.

Dh spoke to her, gave her all the right things to say. Told her he'd be there if she wanted him, no would do it herself.

She went in and when the manager next started for no reason, she properly stood up to him. He backed down after that and she never had a problem again.

Dd looks angelic and is a very gentle sould but by god she has a backbone of steel.

Littlebluebird123 · 03/08/2024 15:35

Unfortunately I don't have one about the worst managers I've known. But one who was heading in that direction.
I requested a meeting via email as a particular decision they'd made hugely negatively affected me and another staff members safety and I wanted to explain that and find a way to go forwards. He was enraged that I'd made it 'formal' and called me into an immediate meeting. He basically told me off for questioning his judgement and that I should have just spoken to him. I pointed out he'd left the premises before I could so that's why I'd emailed. He told me I should never question him again. (Bear in mind, I didn't question him in front of anyone, I'd kept it private.)
Basically he was cross that I'd got it in writing as he knew he was wrong.
He continued to make snide digs and tried to make life difficult but I only had to work with him for another month so whatever.
A few years later he was in the news as he'd made a career ending move. Can't say I was sorry.

ThatsGoingToHurt · 03/08/2024 15:56

Had a Head of HR who was useless. He was nicknamed ‘Teflon’ by the business as the he never did any work but was a master of dumping work into other people. To make it worse he was constantly dumping work on me and bitching to others about me. He made numerous derogatory comments about younger female member of staff. However, the MD saw through him and wanted to get rid and his role was made redundant and he was shunted into the central HR team. After 6 months it was announced he was leaving (we all suspected he was being given the shove). An email went round to the whole HR team about signing a card and a collection. No one responded. He was the only person in 10 years who I knew left without a present and a gift as in his 18 months with the company he had managed to piss everyone off with his laziness and his sexist comments.

sandrapinchedmysandwich · 03/08/2024 16:05

Awful bullying boss. Told people he hoped my DD died when she was tiny and in hospital. Got fired for fraud then became a raging alcoholic as work was literally his life. It couldn't have happened to a nicer guy

MrHarleyQuin · 03/08/2024 16:11

There was one partner in a law firm I worked for who I saw really yelling at junior staff several times - which I found shocking and unacceptable at the time. A few months later he was hospitalised with an ulcer, then never came back to the firm afterwards.
