To think our baby surely can't be THAT big??

Posting here for traffic mostly but also feeling a bit 😬 and looking for people who have experienced similar (and can maybe tell me the hospital got it wrong)

Basically I'm 27 weeks pregnant, 4th baby, and have been told I'm measuring 30 weeks by fundal height which I initially disregarded until I had a scan today and they told me baby was measuring 2lb 10oz putting him on the 91st centile line. I don't have big babies generally. The rest of them have been on the smaller side although our twins were premature they were still just below average for gestation up until they were born and our 3rd baby was only 6lb 13oz when she was born at 39 weeks.

Is there any chance they've got this wrong? They only use abdomen and head measurements at this hospital. They don't also use the femur length for growth scans.
There has been some chat of gestational diabetes and I have a GTT on Monday!

The growth scans are notoriously inaccurate.

In any case - baby size apparently doesn’t have much impact on your birth outcome.

caringcarer · 01/08/2024 18:49

My niece had a baby weighing 10 lb and 11 Oz. They told her the baby might be a little larger than her first DC who was 7 lb 10 Oz.

Seaglassandchampagne · 01/08/2024 18:49

If you have GD then it’s very possible the baby is on the larger size but I also think in utero measurements can be pretty unreliable. I had GD in my first pregnancy and was told my son was measuring absolutely vast, off the scale etc., and he was born a pretty normal 8lb.

Mabelface · 01/08/2024 18:49

My 6lb11oz baby was supposed to be over 8lbs.

Maryamlouise · 01/08/2024 18:51

I was sent in for a growth scan because I was measuring small, the growth scan said baby not too small so no worries but was also way off in predictions and baby was even larger. So I reckon they are not that accurate. Also are you definitely 27 weeks - I reckon they had my measurements all wrong as they dated off 12 week scan and it really couldn't have fitted time wise for conception then.

Thumberline · 01/08/2024 18:54

My first measured above the 90th centile at 28 weeks (after fundal height being small) and she came out at 7lb2oz at 41 weeks.
However my second was a big baby and it was such an easy, quick birth. The midwife told me gravity would help and she was right on this one.

Outwiththenorm · 01/08/2024 18:55

My 7lb baby was predicted to be 9lbs (was also very overdue so it seemed like the dr just kept racking the lbs on 😁).

100% positive on dates because I had a scan when I would have been about 3 weeks and they didn't see anything except thickening of the womb lining. Fast forward a few weeks and there's baby measuring bang on for whatever date I was then. Was still on track at the 20 week scan too which was actually done closer to 22 weeks.

Now this apparently huge baby 😂

They're not always accurate. They predicted my DC would be 10lb. They wanted to induce me early and thought I had gestational diabetes (I didnt). DC had other ideas and arrived before at a healthy 7lb10. I hope all goes well with the rest of your pregnancy.

Olika · 01/08/2024 19:19

I don't trust them completely. I was stressed as they said DD would be closer to 4kg, she was 2.8kg.

NewmummyJ · 01/08/2024 19:20

My 2nd baby was over 2lbs heavier than my first, growth scans predicted this, but I disbelieved them due to all these tales of growth scans being inaccurate, but in my case, they were spot on. It was a waste of the tiny baby clothes I'd got assuming I was having another tiny baby!!

Ohdosodoffdear · 01/08/2024 19:20

It's all a load of bollox in my humble opinion.

I had so many scans and stress with dc 2 who was expected to be "small" he was over 9lb and tore me to shreds.

You may as well stick a finger in the air and guess the babies weight.

MiriamMay · 01/08/2024 19:22

They induced me because they said my daughter was going to be over 11lb. She was actually only 7lb!

HollyLondoner · 01/08/2024 19:23

I was measuring on the 99th percentile and was terrified! I was repeatedly told my baby would be 11-12lbs. He was born on the 50th percentile and 7lbs 🤨. You know best and don't be pressured into anything you don't think is right for you ie induction or c section if that isn't what you want!

bridgetreilly · 01/08/2024 19:24

9% of babies are bigger than the 91st centile.

Milkmani8 · 01/08/2024 19:24

My son was 10”4, they kept telling me I was on the larger side but still fine - they would not give away any details on weight etc because as they say it can be inaccurate blah blah. Had an EMCS after 5 day labour, 4 litre haemorrhage and sepsis, hypovolemic shock and cardiac arrest. Only now that I am going through the complaints system and they tested my placenta - turns out I had undiagnosed GD and should have had a CS in the first place at 5ft2 and 8 stone. Please get checked for GD and if offered a CS take it if you’re on the smaller side. To deliver naturally they concluded I should have been induced at 36 weeks. Sometimes the maternity care is a real shambles.

KatieTaylorMadeMeDoIt · 01/08/2024 19:27

I had scans late in my third trimester for both my DC due to health concerns.

DC1 - predicted to be around 8lbs 6 oz - was 10 lbs 6 oz
DC2 - predicted to be around 9lbs - was 7 lbs 2 oz

Way off! And this was consultant-led care at a top London teaching hospital…

Beth216 · 01/08/2024 19:31

I had extra scans as they were concerned I was underweight and my baby was measuring small. He was over 9lbs.

PyongyangKipperbang · 01/08/2024 19:45

I had this. Was referred back from midwife care to consultant care as I was due to have a very big baby. They were trying to talk me into a c section. I was risking my life, babys life etc if I didnt. As she was my fourth they "allowed" me to attempt vaginal birth on the understanding that I would have a section at the first sign of trouble. She was 6 lbs 4oz, and was always a very small child.

I wouldnt worry too much, especially as they are only using 2 parameters to measure it. Maybe its worth paying for a private (medical) scan to reassure you?

Deary me!

Rather fortunately I'm actually having a growth scan done at a different hospital next week (my care is being moved hospitals for other reasons and today was a one off scan because of some bleeding) so will be interesting to see what this other hospital comes up with!

My 20 week scan measured my baby’s head at the 50th centile. By my growth scan at week 32 or 34 it was measuring 9th centile. I was very worried, but because it wasn’t under the 2nd centile I was told it was fine and still within the normal range! Emergency c-section at 36 weeks and babies head was exactly 50th centile! (I asked the midwife in the operating theatre if the head looked OK and she kindly measured it for me.)

The measurements aren’t always accurate, especially if the angle isn’t quite right. Try not to worry about anything, and see what the measurements are at your next growth scan.

YellowphantGrey · 01/08/2024 20:01

DS estimated to be 6lb at the most. Monitored weekly from 28 weeks and they were going to induce if he didn't show signs of getting bigger. He was growing but they said not much. Bump was huge but they said it was all water.

I went in at 39 weeks with reduced movements and they were concerned and suddenly raised the idea that I was 35 weeks pregnant not 39.

They re scanned and said I'm definitely way under 39 weeks.

DS was born by induction at 41 weeks 4 days, hardly any fluid and weighing 10lb 60z. They were adamant that I was only around the 37 week mark and that baby would potentially need to go to scbu because of their tiny size.

The midwife who delivered said he should have come out two weeks earlier and was furious that I'd been left so long and had no idea why they suddenly decided I was not as far long as I was.

She was actually very helpful in me bringing a complaint as she gave me all my pregnancy notes and appointment details which the hospital and doctors refused to hand over at first because they said I wasn't entitled to see them.

They definitely get the sizes wrong!

JuniperAndTonic · 01/08/2024 20:09

The growth scans were completely inaccurate for me too! At my 36 week growth scan they said DD was already 7lb5 and would be way over 9lb at 40 weeks. Tried to convince me to have a c section or induction. Agreed to induction at 40 weeks but not before.

She was born at 38+3 and weighed 6lb14 - she was tiny!! So glad I didn’t agree to the c section!
