To think our baby surely can't be THAT big??

Posting here for traffic mostly but also feeling a bit 😬 and looking for people who have experienced similar (and can maybe tell me the hospital got it wrong)

Basically I'm 27 weeks pregnant, 4th baby, and have been told I'm measuring 30 weeks by fundal height which I initially disregarded until I had a scan today and they told me baby was measuring 2lb 10oz putting him on the 91st centile line. I don't have big babies generally. The rest of them have been on the smaller side although our twins were premature they were still just below average for gestation up until they were born and our 3rd baby was only 6lb 13oz when she was born at 39 weeks.

Is there any chance they've got this wrong? They only use abdomen and head measurements at this hospital. They don't also use the femur length for growth scans.
There has been some chat of gestational diabetes and I have a GTT on Monday!

Not to be a negative Nelly but I had a GTT at 26 weeks and passed with flying colours. Had to have another due to some complications at 33 weeks and failed it miserably so am now diet controlled and praying it stays that way until baby arrives. Not saying it’ll be the same for you but I thought I was in the clear!

Oh no, I hope you're doing OK. I'll be 32 weeks tomorrow and I'm just so done with being pregnant already. It really does get harder each time! But that could be the 3 kids under 5 I already have causing the exhaustion 😂

With baby 2 I was measuring massively off the curve with the tape measure but I am very short, with scans they said the baby would be big. Sent me for a diabetes test which was borderline high, they tested my blood every week and I never had another high reading, wanted to induce me on my due date due to a very high risk of a huge baby and he was 1/4oz heavier than my first at 7lb 1 and 1/4 oz so perfectly average.

Strugglingtoo · 01/09/2024 22:08

My first was measured all throughout due to other concerns. I’m 5’ 3’’ and 7st and they said she’d be tiny. She was 8lb 7oz, not massive, but big for me. The measurements can be so inaccurate. Hope all goes well, get your rest x x x

ricketybeauty · 01/09/2024 22:14

Same as @Dogwithtoebeans last pregnancy was fine for GD at 28 weeks, developed it by 35 weeks. On diet control but baby was 10lb 5 at 38 weeks. Although that is really massive so I’m sure yours will be a bit more in normal parameters!

mummybearSW19 · 02/09/2024 01:20

Growth scans are notoriously poor at predicting birth size.

I was told I was having huge babies. Both around 3kgs.

Best mate was told she was having a giant.
Nope. around 3.5kg but VERY long!!

Have you had the gestational diabetes test?
And have the HCPs come up with any concerns?
Otherwise try to knuckle down and focus on keeping well.

ToRecordOnlyWater · 02/09/2024 01:35

Fundal measurements ended up being quite accurate for me! My belly measured 7 weeks ahead through the whole pregnancy, had to get tested for GD and extra growth scans etc- just ended up being a 9lb12 baby! Don’t remember what the growth scans estimated, I’m not sure they actually told me.

HappyMuma · 02/09/2024 02:00

With number 2 they kept telling me he would be big, had a growth scan at 36 weeks where they confirmed he would be massive! He was born bang on 40 weeks weighing 8lbs 2.5oz, which is pretty average I think!

OhcantthInkofaname · 02/09/2024 02:09

GD can result in a larger babe. Wait for another scan and GGT.

mummymathsteacher · 02/09/2024 02:09

Just adding some more reassurance about the inaccuracy of scans...I was told to expect a 14lb baby. I had weekly scans and repeated diabetes tests. In the end he was 10lbs at 39 weeks, which is obviously big, but not 14lb big!!!

colourfulchinadolls · 02/09/2024 02:11

My 5lb 10 baby was thought to be LGA, because I'm petite myself they wanted to induce at 38 weeks.

Difficult labour but baby was tiny.

My friend had an easy water birth, went home two hours after delivery and her baby was 10lb.

There's no rhyme or reason to it and growth scans don't tell you much.

DemelzaRobins · 02/09/2024 05:18

My baby measured on the 94th centile at the 20 and 28 week scans, on the 88th centile at the 32 week scan and 72nd centile at the 36 week scan.

He was born on the 25th centile at 40+4!

x2boys · 02/09/2024 05:27

I was told Ds1 would be around 7lb, he was born at 41 weeks weighing only 5lb 14 oz, no idea why he was do small
Had extra growth scans because of this for ds2 and he was 8lb 4oz🤷‍♀️

Create some mantras / birth affirmations you can believe in.... like:
"My body is made to birth this baby"
"I trust my body to know what to do"
"My body was made to do this"
"I'm amazing, I'm growing a small human!"
"I am a force to be reckoned with!"
"My baby will come when my baby is ready"

Lots of mums find affirmations very powerful in grounding me during some of the anxious points of pregnancy and labour and the post natal period.

frazzledbutcalm · 02/09/2024 16:54

Growth scans are rubbish.

dc1 I was told ‘you’re hiding it very well, babies going to be a good 7lb (I was 5’2 7 stone wet through 😆) .. cue my 5lb baby at birth.
dc2 had a few growth scans after being told baby is small. Then told baby was big towards the end .. cue 7lb baby at birth.

Take it all with a pinch of salt 😉

spikeandbuffy24 · 02/09/2024 17:21

My mum was told I would be big, I was born premature at 3lbs ish
Then they said my growth would be stunted and I would always be small
Then age 2 they started panicking how tall I was going to be, predicting 6ft 4
I'm 5ft 10... Grin

Thank you 😊 But I'm not actually worried about giving birth because I'm having a section. Just couldn't/can't imagine actually having a big baby after 3 small ones 😂

So the plot thickens. I'm now 35+3 and had another growth scan today. Baby's femur is still measuring 95th centile but the abdomen and head circumference have dropped way down the chart. Overall he's now measuring between the 25th and 50th centiles and they're talking about bringing my section forward to 37+3 🙈

I think that makes sense- my friend had an early induction for a baby measuring large- turned out he was just (and still is) very tall, top of the height charts- weight wise he was only about 8lb.

RedRobyn2021 · 26/09/2024 17:44

Well I look forward to hearing how big your baby actually is

I wouldn't be listening to these clowns that's for sure

Just wanted to update to say our beautiful little baby boy arrived and he weighs a whopping... 7lb 3oz 😂

Ah Congratulations!! So glad everything went well for you and after all that he wasn’t the giant they were predicting!! Enjoy those newborn snuggles💙

RedRobyn2021 · 17/10/2024 07:44

Congratulations

What a surprise, the growth scans were completely wrong
