Aibu to have not left DC in private schools. I aibu to have moved them back to state when I caught wind of the VAT to have been added on.

Aibu to now not be funding the additional needed state school teachers?

@123HappyMee no, it’s more that they can’t know how many people will keep their children in private school so they are estimating the money generated. They can’t know for sure, this is what manifestos are, a declaration of what they want to do. They want to fund new teachers, they are estimating the number based on the extra money they hope to get.

I thought it worked out about half a teacher per school, t will take a lot more than just that to improve our local school

I really hope the government do something useful with the money. It would be disappointing if that's all it funds.

I guess not good times right now.

Don’t do this. This government is a shit show on a one way ticket to hell. Let them reap what they sow. I would spend your time making sure your assets are well protected and not touchable by any upcoming capital gains and inheritance tax changes.

Grin unlike the last government who were a masterclass in organisation and high standards?

I know, when the last 8 years have been so fabulous.

Do what the fuck you like, love. It's your money and your children.

Strange to care so much about your children’s education that the only answer is to pay for private education and then to roll the dice and remove them before even an election result let alone policy confirmation.

As you can see, it's turned out she's made the right move. Much easier to get a place before the panic.

Serencwtch · 01/08/2024 21:09

The school gets funding for each pupil on their books so the teachers in your DCs school will get money for having an extra pupil.

The more pupils in state school the better for everyone.

I think you may be pleasantly surprised in September by the state education. You are more likely to have fully QTS qualified teachers in every lesson. I genuinely think you've made a good decision.

State school is actually proving better.

When did you move them? The general election was only a few weeks before the summer holidays.

That is good to hear. Very positive all round.

I'm surprised your seeing such a quick improvement on education from the election anoncements to now. I don't pay my kids fees so non of this directly effects me. However I'd stick with my class size of 8-12 rather than sock it to the man thanks. Also at our local indi there are two maths teachers with doctorates in maths. Not so much at the much oversubscribed sought after state. But I doubt vat worries are on radar for those parents. It's an elite expensive indi. Meow! 🤣

I hope you enjoy your NHS brexit bus moment.

TizerorFizz · 01/08/2024 21:18

@Serencwtch Except where I live, few schools have places. Anyone wanting a place for January will have a shock. Nearly all years in all schools are full. Big notice on the LA’s admissions web site

The prep school my DD attended had ace music facilities, a new swimming pool, drama stage and lighting, numerous after school clubs, French and Latin, qualified science and maths teachers, and a proper curriculum for all other subjects taught separately and also had fantastic art teaching with specialist art rooms. Great sport. I know perfectly well no state school offered this as older DD attended one. If you are using a top prep, state is a million miles away.

Your posts have a strange script like feel to them.

The amount of traffic in respect of 'VAT on private school fees' threads in the past week has been astounding. And as soon as one thread reaches 1000 posts (and therefore doesn't allow any further comments), another one starts. No other subject has ever caused so much controversy on MN.

It's almost as if there are a group of people (bots) out there who are deliberately trying to cause friction and resentment. Who take joy or worse when people are at war with each other. There is no other explanation as to why people who don't use the private school system are spending so much time telling those who do that they're happy about VAT. It's bonkers.

No you’re actually doing what the government wants you to do, leave private education. This is a policy that actually costs more money than it raises in tax so it’s ideological rather than to save or make money and you’ve done the right thing.

Interesting DonnaB. I like the thinking behind this.

Your post makes very little sense, but it’s great news that you’ve taken your children out of private school! If only everyone else would do the same.

They're clearly trying to put private schools out of business. Starmer's claim he wants the sector to thrive rings very hollow. If he's worried about private bodies making profit out of non-VATable goods and services he should look into the big chains running nurseries and care homes. He should look into how much Tescos and Sainsburys are making selling bread and milk. Most independent schools are run by a group of volunteers, such as the local vicar. The idea they're hoarding wealth is ridiculous.

Are you now anti private school? Did you have a bad experience?

I thought labour were quoting in the news how many additional state school teachers the private school vat will fund?

Edited

I'm sure labour have done their maths.

615,000 kids in the UK in private schools.

About £7000 tax per pupil is a maximum of £4,305,000,000. (Based on average boarding fees - it'd probably less than this due to day pupils).

£7500 per year cost to government for every one of those kids if they drop out of private school and attend a state school.

So even if 50% of parents pull their kids out and put them in state schools they still make money as it's roughly equal amounts.

(Basic rough maths here but you get the idea....)

Not anti private school, no. Horses for courses.

Not a bad experience, just not one that felt worth the expense, or the opportunity cost for the money.

not worth your kid actually having teachers?
