To think that homebirths should not be permitted unless you're willing to pay for it all yourself

Its appalling that there are not enough midwives to go around and yet women still insist on having babies at home. Why on earth would you think you have the "right to decide" where to have a baby when that service is being paid for by taxpayers. You wouldn't think you had the right to have a hip replacement at home or any other medical procedures. What on earth gives these women "the right"

(Sparkleymummy is a bit bored as a result of teething baby having been asleep on her ALL day - She sits back and waits for the uproar )

YABU.

Homebirth costs the NHS less.

beaniesteve · 14/04/2008 14:29

they have no right. Luckily they have a choice.

sparkleymummy · 14/04/2008 14:30

I'm willing to be persuaded - Is that really true?

It's like these selfish sorts who insist on breastfeeding. Takes up hours of midwives' time and causes huge bunfights on mn.

Some women actually demand expensive pain relief too

FFS. Take an aspirin. Wimps.

OOH Cake!

Youcannotbeserious · 14/04/2008 14:31

YABU...

Where, exactly, would you draw the line?

Why not check people have enough money to raise the child according to your standards for the next 18 years????

i think you'll find that most people who are referred to a consultant from a GP have a choice on where they are treated....

An average of 68% less than a hospital birth

SueBaroo · 14/04/2008 14:32

The service is being paid for by taxpayers? Are pregnant women not taxpayers then?

susie100 · 14/04/2008 14:32

YABU - Costs the NHS a lot less than hospital birth.

What are your views on elective C sections?

I'll tell you what - as the taxpayers are paying, how about they come round and do the delivery for free - save themselves a few bob. It can't be that hard after all.

SquonkTheBeerGuru · 14/04/2008 14:35

Well, I'll tell you what, I've been working since I were fifteen year old, I've paid my stamp all my life and never claimed nothing from the gover'men that I weren't entitled to, so if I want to have a baba on the kitchen floor wi' nowt but the tin bath tub to wash in, then I bloody well will. OK?

Bumdiddley · 14/04/2008 14:37

YUNBU...there aren't enough midwives in the hospitals....

There aren't enough bloody anethetists (sp) either. With both of my births I had to wait, yes wait to have an epidural. Second time it was too late and I BEGGED for drugs...selfish bitches...

kayzisexpecting · 14/04/2008 14:38

PMSL Squonk!!!

Im sure the woman my mum knows who used to live in the highlands of Scotland who was snowed in and had no choice but to give birth at home without a midwife will give you your tax back.

Saturn74 · 14/04/2008 14:39

These darn women, insisting on giving birth where they like, demanding choices and wanting to feel like they are individuals!

Perhaps it would make more sense to train more midwives than insisting all women give birth in hospital?

Anna8888 · 14/04/2008 14:39

YABVU

Home births are much cheaper for the NHS than any other kind.

SueBaroo · 14/04/2008 14:41

Actually, Delivery by Stork is far cheaper than Hospital or home.

sparkleymummy · 14/04/2008 14:42

Hmm not persuaded by US article.

Surely the only reason the stats show that it is cheaper is because the hospital stats get skewed by the fact that more complicated deliveries are carried out in hospitals. If you compared like for like normal home births with normal hospital births it must surely be cheaper to deliver babies in hospital because you don't need (or at least get) the hours of one on one care that you get at home.

And yes ok the homebirthing earth mother may well pay her taxes but she's taking a disproportionate amount of money back out of the system.

Elective C-Sections - Hmm. Had better start another controversial thread on that one but in general aren't they pretty hard to come by unless you pay?

kayzisexpecting · 14/04/2008 14:42

And less painful too Sue

PrincessPeaHead · 14/04/2008 14:43

Sparkley I think you should go and write out a cheque RIGHT NOW for the additional amount you cost me as a taxpayer for being selfish enough to have your baby in a hospital rather than at home. If you had an epidural or a caesarian that will be a big cheque.

Maybe as home births are cheaper than hospital births the women who give birth at home should be getting a refund
