"Vintage" Marmite *lighthearted*

So, I couldn't sleep in the heat and got up to make myself some toast and marmite. While I was waiting for the toast to pop I found myself reading the back of the marmite jar. Best before March 2012. It's a large jar. I've been eating it a few times a month for... (based on the brand saying they put 18 months on their 'best befores') 14 years! It tastes absolutely fine. There is around 1cm left in the bottom of the jar, no mould. Frankly I'm impressed at it's longevity.

Now to decide, do I buy a new jar that might be less concentrated, or see it through to the end? 🤔

Got to put a pic up, just for the record!

Did you win it in a tombola? 😂

Uricon2 · 01/08/2024 16:25

A chef's trick is adding a bit to fried mushrooms towards the end of cooking. Highly recommend.

Cookerhood · 01/08/2024 16:29

I just want to know how you make it last so long? I'm on about my third jar of the year!
Is the XO one good?

That's my worry. What if the vintage marmite has spoiled me for the fresh jar? 😕

You can get extra strong 'matured' Marmite. You've probably inadvertently made your own version of it.

catin8oots · 01/08/2024 17:21

How can I make myself like marmite? I really really want to like it.

I'm a total savoury girl. Love all things salty and i love twiglets.

It makes me sad.

mustardrarebit · 01/08/2024 23:48

@Cookerhood I dimly recall having a smaller jar alongside this one. We also get those mini foil packs of it in recipe boxes. It probably got shoved to the back of the shelf and forgotten about. I'm the only one who eats it, but I have marmite craving phases. I must be deficient in something!

Start small. Loads of butter on tasty bread and an almost invisible smear of marmite.

Edited

I don't remember buying it, so maybe my parents left it here when they stayed...

I've been searching for a local stockist. Not getting rid of mine until I can compare them!

It's too salty for mould to survive. Ditto honey is sweet. Honey has been found in ancient Egyptian tombs that was absolutely fine.

I think they still have to put a 'best before date' on salt itself...stuff that's been in a mine in Cheshire for a couple of million years.Grin

spikeandbuffy · 02/08/2024 00:06

Actually glad to read that. When Covid happened and there was a marmite shortage, I asked my dad to pick up some XO if he saw it
Being my dad he went overboard and I have 15 big jars....

spikeandbuffy · 02/08/2024 00:11

all dated June 2022
It's less salty and more "beefy" than normal marmite to my taste
Brilliant in beef stew or cottage pie

Yabu to have been so slow to eat it. It's too tasty to keep that long. A jar barely lasts a month as my 6 year old has some kind of habit. I have to buy the low salt version from the health food shop, which is very expensive. It's marmite or netflix in our house. The marmite won.

leeverarch · 02/08/2024 00:30

I have some Knorr stock cubes with a use-by date of 25th February 1993.

They need to be in a museum 😆

I don't think it was out only one. I am, however, the only marmite eater in a household of 5! Working on the kids, I'm sure they'll get into it if I put if with some beef dripping roasties.

I'm interested to know how you're using Marmite in cooking, OP? It's got a lovely umami flavour but I wouldn't know what to try it in as an ingredient.

Marmite, spaghetti, butter and cheese. It’s wonderful!

mustardrarebit · 04/08/2024 16:52

I bought some of the XO marmite!

Direct taste comparison completed with my homemade XO.

Shop bought is thicker, less shiny and more salty. Much harder to spread. The original is very runny and easy to smear thinly on toast. Taste isn't bad, in fact they are quite similar apart from the extra saltiness.

Verdict: Make your own by storing it in the back of a cupboard for 14 years.

I'm going to throw a cat among the pigeons here, but Aldi or Asda own brand "yeast extract" is better than marmite. Spreads much easier and tastes better.

MyDH also hated Marmite, despite loving twigkets and Marmite crisps etc. Turns out he also had thought it like Nutella. The first time he made me Marmite on toast I almost died at the amount he put on!! Now he knows how to use it he bloody loves it!!

I also use it in cooking. Amazing in gravy!

Cookerhood · 04/08/2024 17:10

I love Lidl yeast extract but I can't get it at the moment. I didn't rate the Aldi one.

KimberleyClark · 04/08/2024 17:34

Dare I say I’m quite partial to Vegemite? It’s less salty and more yeasty than Marmite.

LoneHydrangea · 04/08/2024 17:36

I am amazed as we go through 2 jars a month here. I wouldn't care about the date as long as it tasted ok and wasn't mouldy.

You could buy the Marmite XO. I found it too strong though, and I love the ordinary stuff.

I agree! The supermarket own brand version is easier to spread so better for toddlers toast. Between me and DS we go through a jar a week!

As a result of this thread I have today purchased a pot of 'XO'. I will secrete it in the back of the cupboard - should be starting to be ready in about 2030.
