Shared garden space with dog using it as toilet!

Hello

We have a shared back garden area, no front garden. Neighbours have a big dog, they let it use the shared garden area as a dog toilet, don't take it walks. I have a toddler that I now don't feel safe letting out to play. I have asked them nicely to not leave poo about but its doing wet poos and also peeing everywhere which is killing large patches of the grass. Oh I hate it! Now my children have no garden to use and theirs does.

Am I being unreasonable to not let my little ones out to the dog toilet? It makes me so angry to be honest.

sorry just added that there, we have this, but toddler will melt down and wont stay in our bit.

That's firmly a you problem. You have a dog free space, if you don't like it, tough.

TheQuickCat · 31/07/2024 19:19

Not sure about your council but with mine you can't rent and property and have a dog unless you also have a private garden.
If the gardens shared they might not even be allowed to have a dog.
You need to raise this with the council.

Saltedbutter · 31/07/2024 19:21

I think the fact you have a fenced area and you don’t keep your toddler in that is definitely a ‘you’ problem. That’s the simple solution here. Teach your toddler ‘no’ and then this wouldn’t be an issue surely?

Cookiecrumblepie · 31/07/2024 19:25

Can they not train their dog to poo and wee in one corner of the garden? Maybe put a small “dog toilet” sandy bit for the dog and start training it yourself? Can you not buy a hose and just hose off the wet poo whenever you see it? Is there dog poo repellent stuff you can buy to discourage it from going anywhere but one corner? Could you get advice from a dog expert?

Cookiecrumblepie · 31/07/2024 19:29

Try vinegar spray, ammonia? Use strong discouraging smells near your fence and the majority of the garden.

and make an attractive poo space.

Floralnomad · 31/07/2024 19:32

I don’t quite get who has a fenced off bit or where but if the whole area is to be shared by 3 houses could you just not agree between you to split it 3 ways and fence off your own parts . A diagram would really help @NOTSUREWHATIMDOINHERE

You want your child to be allowed to play in the shared area while you have your area that you own fenced in but the people who rent shouldn'tbl be allowed to let their dog use their shared garden right?

The council permits dogs in their tenancies, dogs are allowed to use gardens. They aren't letting the dog poop pile up, it's not unreasonable of them at all. The dog isn't causing a nuisance. You're a bit of a CF though. Get rid of your fancy garden plants and make it more child friendly if it's such an issue.

You have the wrong idea of what's happening here. But I see it might be hard to fully picture what's happening. The grassy bit is our washing hanging bit too. We each have a side and the middle shared. Don't want share with dog toilet.

Dirty bastards. Sorry OP but twats like this and their dog shit are reasons why when househunting we have always rejected properties with shared ANYTHING, you just need to read the many threads on here about driveways, parking, gardens etc. I know there are good neighbours too but it's such a gamble.

BreadInCaptivity · 31/07/2024 19:44

WTF am I reading here?

When did dog entitlement get so bad?

Rather than blame a child for wanting to explore let's consider the appropriateness of a family that think it's ok to use a shared garden as a dog toilet.

The piss and poo stinks even if the space is separated.

In what other circumstance would people say it's ok to leave your families piss/shit in a communal space.

If you don't have the space/skills/job for a dog to impact anyone other than you then you shouldn't own one.

It's utterly grim and I can't understand why people can't see otherwise apart from being utterly selfish.

I used to live in the south west and it was in a local paper that a tiny little girl put dog poo in her eyes when she was playing in the playground that clearly stated 'no dogs'.
The poor child's eye swelled up and had to have her eye removed because it couldn't be saved. Devastating.

Oh my goodness this is heartbreaking and infuriating!

I think your child wanting to play there is a bit of a red herring tbh as its purpose is a shared drying green, not a play ground for your child or toilet for their dog. Your justifiable complaint is that they are allowing their dog to use the drying green as a toilet when they should only allow that on their strip. I'd ask them if they'd stop the dog going on the drying green if I were you but I wouldn't be arguing that was so your child could play there.

I understand but their kids play there too.

Eh, I don't think that's cf at all. Dog shit all over a shared space, wholly unacceptable 😑.
Sick of people getting dogs and not doing the basics, ie, taking it walks to do it's business

And to add children aside I wouldn't want to navigate this in a shared drying green as an adult.

If you want to use a garden/green space as a dog toilet then make sure it's your own and that nobody else has to deal with it.

OP make a complaint on the basis it's not appropriate to use a communal space as a dog toilet.

Your child's curiosity is not an issue here.

Nobody should have to put up with the downside of having a dog they don't own.

Are you joking?

A shared piece of grass and it's fine to have the dog use it as his toilet? Dear god.

They are so out of order.

GoFigure235 · 31/07/2024 20:07

They sound rank.

Have you tried spraying parts of the garden (around the washing-line etc) with home-made citrus spray? Dogs don't like the smell of citrus apparently.

Nobody can argue with this,, you are the 🏆 for reasonability. 👏

For anyone who asked for a diagram. It's this sort of idea. Sorry about my writing lol.

Ok , well for a start you can complain to the council about their trampoline being in the shared area as most councils have rules about that and pools as they would be landed with the law suit if your child injured itself . Whilst you are complaining about the trampoline complain about the dog being loose in the shared area .

GoFigure235 · 31/07/2024 20:43

I'd be tempted to put dog repellent on the shared space so the dog learns to keep to your neighbour's space.

RandomMess · 31/07/2024 20:54

Dig out your deeds.

This is the only way to tackle it, them obeying the deeds is enforceable by the letting agents.
