To machine wash my bras?

Connected1 · 31/07/2024 11:01

I've finally found bras that will give me proper support. They cost a bit more but it's worth it.
The care label says to hand wash in warm water. This is written on the label, rather than just being a symbol.

Will I ruin them if I chuck them in the machine on a low temperature?
Anybody else do this, and what was the result?
I always machine washed my older bras, not sure if it made any difference to them.

I always put mine in a delicate wash and have never noticed enough of a difference to make me put aside the time to handwash.

bluecomputerscreen · 31/07/2024 11:04

yanbu
I wash mine in a mesh bag together with my usual laundry.

laundry purists can piss off.

Topofthemountain · 31/07/2024 11:05

Do you use a bag for them? I've found the Brabantia ones the best.

AnnaMagnani · 31/07/2024 11:05

Mesh bag and a delicates wash, no spin.

Happyinarcon · 31/07/2024 11:07

I would never in a million years hand wash a bra

Same here, all fine. I was on 30.

Drizzlebizzle · 31/07/2024 11:12

Mesh bag, normal wash here

jannier · 31/07/2024 11:12

If I pay £50 plus I hand wash it only takes seconds to rinse through. Unfortunately my size and post surgery most bras are £50 plus.
They do lose support quicker in a machine.

middleagedandinarage · 31/07/2024 11:13

I just fill the sink with warm water and put in a dash of persil liquid and wash them in the sink, so much quicker anyway.

spikeandbuffy · 31/07/2024 11:14

I hand wash for however long they guarantee them for and then machine wash!

Peonies12 · 31/07/2024 11:27

I've always put them just in a normal wash, never thought to do otherwise. But everyone on MN seems to do about 100 washes a week, all different!

EdithStourton · 31/07/2024 11:30

I shove them in the most delicate wash my machine does.

They last for ages.

milveycrohn · 31/07/2024 11:34

It depends on whether you have the right settings on your washing machine.
Make sure it is a gentle wash, a low temperature (30 degrees), and a low spin approx 800 revs

C152 · 31/07/2024 11:39

If they were really expensive, like La Perla, I would hand wash. If they're at the cheaper end of the scale, I'd chuck them in the washing machine with a normal load. (Wash white bras on their own or with other whites though, as some go grey if you put them in a normal load. Also, I wash darkly coloured bras in cold water, by hand, first, to see if the colour runs. I've got a black bra that I have to continue to wash on its own, as even after being washed over a dozen times, the colour runs every time.)

Mindyourfunkybusiness · 31/07/2024 11:50

In the past I washed my bras by hand because they were fancy.
Then I had kids.
One day I was clearly out of my mind and put them in a mesh bag with a regular wash. I've not gone back since 😂

Real talk the difference I have found is they stretch far quicker than they did when I hand washed. I also had decoration on one and they've slowly been falling off. I don't care enough to be honest. The arm straps stretch quicker too - but mine pop off and I just buy replacements if the under bit is still good. I find over time they get more worn but it's not terrible. And alllll my bras say hand wash only. Oh and if silk it rips off? So maybe avoid those in regular wash. Idk idc anymore but if I purchased more bras I'd probably make effort to hand wash them maybe. Idk. Now I started machine washing my bras I cba to go back but my kids are older now so I would have the time to.

GigiAnnna · 31/07/2024 11:52

I always machine wash them, I don't think you can get them properly clean hand washing and I haven't got time. I just hang them up to dry. It's the tumble dryer that ruins them.

Willoo · 31/07/2024 11:53

I just shove mine in a regular wash with everything else. They’re fine

LittleGreenDragons · 31/07/2024 11:56

I've always machine washed but can I ask why others use a mesh bag?

WobblyBoots · 31/07/2024 11:57

I have to buy expensive ones too. I put them in a laundry bag on a delicate wash and low spin. I couldn't get them clean properly with an actual hand wash (and like most people not do I have the time and inclination!). Seems to work fine and they last well.

so that the clips to catch on other items and stretch the elastic during the wash.

bluecomputerscreen · 31/07/2024 12:00

and to contain the wire should that escape

Maverickess · 31/07/2024 12:07

I hand wash anything with an under wire or padding because I've found they last longer without getting poked in the chest with an escaping under wire half way through my day or the padding becoming lumpy and odd looking.

Sports bras and the non under wires wash with everything else.

Mind I buy cheap bras George at Asda usually but I can't afford to replace them as often as I was having to - I do wash my bras quite regularly because I get sweaty at work. I just soak in the sink for an hour or so and then rinse and hang up in the shower to drip dry.

BadSkiingMum · 31/07/2024 12:13

I have quite a few bras and do a special ‘bra wash’ once a fortnight or so. I just put them in together on a delicate cycle. I think it is putting them in with a full load that can cause problems to wires etc.

They seem absolutely fine with this treatment - M&S underwired bras.

TorroFerney · 31/07/2024 12:17

Well have learned something new, have always machine washed mine as did my mother. And also tumble dry them. But I am very flat chested and get my bras mainly for a few quid from Primark and they can stretch and stretch as they aren't needed for support!

RishiIsACuntWaffle · 31/07/2024 12:17

Put them in a special padded bag to wash them to protect them.
