To machine wash my bras?

Connected1 · 31/07/2024 11:01

I've finally found bras that will give me proper support. They cost a bit more but it's worth it.
The care label says to hand wash in warm water. This is written on the label, rather than just being a symbol.

Will I ruin them if I chuck them in the machine on a low temperature?
Anybody else do this, and what was the result?
I always machine washed my older bras, not sure if it made any difference to them.

Machine spinning stretches stretchy things more than they ought to be stretched. Putting them in mesh bags helps contain them and stop them stretching out. This applies to bras, cycling shorts and swimming costumes in our house.

I wash mine on the delicate machine wash setting and they're always fine.

I do put them in a little bag thing, but that's more to stop the fastenings from getting caught on the other things in the wash than to protect the bras themselves!

gamerchick · 31/07/2024 12:22

I use the hand wash setting on cold. No spin. It's not worth how much they cost imo.

Wool cycles and delicate cycles have got much better.

Life is far too short to machine wash bras.

TonyeKnausgaard · 31/07/2024 12:24

I'm quite fussy about my laundry but I stick my bras in on a normal wash. I do them up beforehand so they won't attach themselves to anything.

One caveat there is that the majority of my bras have no padding. The few that do can get a bit crumpled in the washing machine. However, I find that by the time they've been washed enough to make an impact, they're usually years old and not in the best condition anyway.

LiterallyOnFire · 31/07/2024 12:24

Hand wash, I mean. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Connected1 · 31/07/2024 12:28

Thanks everyone! The consensus seems to be I can machine wash on delicate/low temp, thank god!

I'll use a mesh bag too, thanks for the suggestion. Wouldn't have thought of that.

Mine go in the machine and I accept that this means they probably won't last quite as long. If they were very expensive or difficult to replace, I might handwash them.

I think the mesh bags are a good idea although I don't bother as mine don't have underwires or fastenings.

Mesh bag and a delicates wash, no spin.

This. I do it with my cashmere now and reshape while damp. Otherwise it languishes at the bottom of the laundry basket (and the to-do list)

Do you use a bag for them? I've found the Brabantia ones the best.

Haha I almost looked up Brabantia bras then... it's been a long morning... Blush

Katiesaidthat · 31/07/2024 12:38

I machine was mine, no problems.

TheFlis · 31/07/2024 12:38

If you do the hooks up (as if you were wearing it) before you put them in the machine then the hooks won’t catch on things.

DoublePeonies · 31/07/2024 12:38

Mesh bag, but 40C, 1200 spin, mid/dark load depending on what needs washing when I'm running low on bras!
Lost one about 6 months ago - but the mesh bag got chewed up too. Otherwise, I get several years out of 4 bras, then buy a load more.

I've always machine washed but can I ask why others use a mesh bag?

You really don't want the bill resulting from an escaped bra underwire getting stuck in the washing machine innards. I speak from experience.

Oldfatandfrumpy · 31/07/2024 12:57

Blimey, mine just get chucked in with the normal washing

Tbf you're supposed to do that anyway. Zips up, turned inside out, buttons fastened, turned inside out, bras hooked together.. Stops all the snagging. Washing machines are brutal really.

I’ve always hand washed my bras. I vaguely remember my older sister saying hers were ruined when our DM washed in the machine.

so that the clips to catch on other items and stretch the elastic during the wash.

My daughter had put her bra in a mesh bag. The clip managed to peek through the mesh & get hold of another mesh bag in the same wash. Took ages to untangle!

I have never hand washed a bra in all my 30 years of wearing one.

Use a mesh bag so the bras don't get all tangled up with other items.
I also wash them on a wool wash at 30 degrees with other delicates.
