To think he shouldn't have been paid in full while off long term. As its more like being self employed.
But mainly cos it was 475k upwards of our TV licence money!
Another example is when a famous radio presenter s decide to go off for an extended break to film another show or something. Surely they don't get normal pay when they have extra weeks off not on air!!

Just think of the amount of times he has presented the news- maybe presenting about saville or other horrific people. All the while, he’s just like them.

And the pictures of him attending court. Hang your head in shame man! Sunglasses on, not giving a rats ass

ACynicalDad · 31/07/2024 13:28

I believe he didn't tell the BBC he'd been arrested and charged and was still employed there then. I think anything after that the BBC should be looking to reclaim; the earlier stuff is harder unless there is something in his contract, frankly there should be.

Janiie · 31/07/2024 13:28

What a revolting man. Playing the mental health card last year when he'd been caught at 64 chasing teenagers. It is really quite staggering how we obviously have no idea of the depravity of people and disgusting pervs can look as respectable as Edwards.

I hope Sopel, Maitlis and the many fans on mn are feeling as disgusted as the rest of us, or will we hear his 'mental health' must've made him do it.

GelatoPistacchio · 31/07/2024 13:29

I hope this is a wake up call to other men going down a dark road through porn addition. If the details in the Guardian article are correct, he tried to guard himself against prosecution by asking his 'supplier' not to send photos that were illegal or underage. I'm glad it's not a defence.

It seems obvious that if you are going to such lengths to procure porn then it's not going to be legal or morally acceptable material is it?

This might just be the tip of the iceberg with him. Maybe he has always had this darkness within him. But child porn offenses are becoming so common now that we need to think about why this is happening and how we can stop it.

How has it all been kept secret? Famous people are usually always named when charged particularly regarding sex offences. Why have the cps kept it all out of the public eye?

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 31/07/2024 13:30

I don’t care at all about the money - if that is what his contract and BBC procedure states, then so be it.

If he has done as has been alleged then I’m very sad and angry about that. Really didn’t have him down for such horrific acts.

He has pleaded guilty.

hellotowel · 31/07/2024 13:31

Did they catch the other nonce, who sent him all these horrible images?

Ah I didn’t realise.

Makes me sick watching BBC News today knowing that any one of these men could be a wrongun. Honestly I think the time has come to ban men from holding high-profile responsible jobs, it's just too risky.

Agreed. We should ban women from high profiles responsible jobs too, because of Vanessa George and Joanna Dennehy.

In future I think all high profile responsible jobs should be held by cockerpoos.

DonutHole · 31/07/2024 13:33

@Howtoeatanelephant

"The level of ignorance about jobs, employment and law on this this thread is astounding"

Completely agree. Moral and legal arguments are being conflated. Laws, contacts and policy need to apply to everyone, irrespective of job roles. This point is completely separate to his ultimate, shocking, disgusting, conviction.

Edited for spelling.

Haven't heard if they've identified the sender? Perhaps to do with that.

Over40Overdating · 31/07/2024 13:34

@GelatoPistacchio i agree something needs to be done about CSA material being so much more freely available now. That someone would so freely and confidently share these over WhatsApp is staggering.

The rise in porn addiction in young men and violent against WAG/misogyny is not a coincidence.

TallulahBetty · 31/07/2024 13:10

Well, to be fair to the BBC, he could well have been found not guilty, and they would have been in a world of legal trouble for not paying him and/or allowing him the payrise.

Basic employment law, whether you work for a small company or massive national conglomerate.

This.

By the sounds of it, he didn't disclose what was happening in terms of the investigation to the BBC and it's taken them by surprise. Which says a lot about him in his own right. He didn't respect the BBC enough to keep them up to date and protect the organisation better.

But then what do you expect from someone who didn't report images he knew to be illegal and kept in touch with the person who sent them.

His priority has been him.

I know someone who previously worked with his wife. She's apparently lovely and doesn't take shit. It's no surprise to hear that they quietly separated since everything came out. I really feel for her and her kids.

Him. Couldn't give a shit.

I also think its interesting how many people played down the allegations when they came out saying he had been a victim of a witch hunt. And continued to do so. They didn't want to understand how his status and position of power alone was problematic given what he was getting up to and how a similar relationship for someone working as a teacher would have been a sackable offence.

I wonder where those posters are now, given he'd pled guilty. They've all gone rather quiet.

A man I used to work with blamed his mental health when he was convicted. His wife and daughter (who has children of her own) stood by him. We only found out when it was in the local paper.

I've no doubt his mental health was affected. Such a well-respected man caught out in such disgusting behaviour??

The dirty fucker did it to himself

Loads of tiny companies could not afford to pay in full. That's life. Esp if your a trades person working for someone.

Even tiny companies if they suspend a member of staff due to investigation of gross misconduct are required to pay that individual in full. And yes sometimes doing the right thing can put tiny companies in extreme difficulty, but it is following UK employment law.

Is that what the guardian said? Can you link? Because I read he received an image with the 7 year old and they talked about how young th4 could being raped was and he said not to send that young again , but th youngest of all the children was 14, so he logically wasn’t asking not to receive underage kids and th4 guy sending them, was a paedophile.

They weren’t all teenagers, some were small children. It’s interesting that when this first came out, the narrative pushed was very much that they were 17. I wonder where that rumour came from….

Knew a man in the exact same situation. I’d hope the world is narrow enough that it’s the same one but sadly it’s highly unlikely isn’t it.

Look, I don’t want to start this bun fight on a Wednesday afternoon but… Labradors, surely.

Janiie · 31/07/2024 13:41

What on earth was he doing on such a high salary anyway. He read the news and displayed absolutely no personality or talent. Yes he had a nice voice but then so do many people.

FarmFlowers · 31/07/2024 13:42

I understand that they couldn't withdraw his salary or normal pay rise while he was away.
But I would like to know if it was normal to give him such a big annual rise as £40,000? If it was, he got a rise like this every year, then fair enough.

However, if it was the year that the BBC were aware that events were coming to light, I do wonder why in that particular year they gave him a pay rise that was out of the ordinary.

A cynic might say it was because they knew he would be out of a job and wanted to help him feather his nest before the axe fell.

OK so this is a genuine question which I have and asking in good faith, I do not feel any sympathy with Huw Edwards so please don't flame me people...

but...

I just read online that he recieved underage pics unsolicited and asked the sender not to send him any more underage pics. So in law, how can he be guilty if he didn't solicit the pics?

Because surely anyone who wanted to destroy the reputation of anyone could get them in trouble simply by sending them pics they hadn't asked for?
