VAT on school fees not applied retroactively- ultra wealthy are safe

VAT on school fees won’t be applied retroactively to school fees paid before 29 July meaning if you paid your child’s entire education upfront, you escape the 20% increase. I know people who did this in the hopes that this would happen and now it has. TELL ME HOW THIS IS FAIR??? The ultra wealthy won’t be impacted by this at all while other families are going to have to move their children. To those of you who support VAT on school fees, please know that it won’t apply to everyone and that some of the revenues from this will be lost. If you think it won’t matter because very few will have prepaid, you should disagree with this on principle.

regardless of where you stand on the topic of VAT on school fees, I think we can agree this is fundamentally unfair.

Why aren’t you pissed off with your school? They’re dicking you around! How much are you paying already? How much did your fees go up last year, the year before?
And they are increasing fees despite knowing their customers are going to be hit by VAT?
These amazing, special places of education don’t appear to give a stuff about you and turn kids.
Why rage at posters here, who use state schools, for lack of ‘empathy’ - it’s not on us that this has happened.
Your schools
are SCREWING uou over. Why are they adding to your stress? Don’t they care?

Get off MN and out your energy into getting answers from the school you pay. They’re the business, you’re the customer.

I’m not raging or bleating thanks. Are you usually this rude?

Shaketherombooga · 07/09/2024 15:17

You should be raging - these businesses are taking you for mugs!

There’s a crowdfunded test case! I am delighted that this shines a light on the terrible underfunding of SEND support in state schools (which Labour has promised to do fuck all about). I reckon because this situation is so hard for the government to define, given that ‘SEND but no EHCP’ covers a multitude of situations, if this mum wins then it could be the end of the policy for everyone. It just becomes impractical to apply. (that’s not her aim, but just my interpretation). She does say that she wants to end the policy.

If you’re on here, Alex Quinn, thank you, I can appreciate as a fellow SEND mum how much time and stress this case will be costing you. Flowers

Autistic child's mum launches High Court bid on private school VAT

Alexis Quinn told how scores of parents like her will no longer be able to afford the fees of independent schools as they are hiked to absorb the additional VAT.

Not for one second did anyone think that private school parents would sit back and do nothing about having to pay fair tax … it’s expected and will make very little difference.
Most private school whining is along the lines of ‘Do you KNOW who I am??’ And will go nowhere…

EHCPerhaps · 08/09/2024 13:46

Your ableist aggression towards other people is really unpleasant.

Like most people I have paid fair tax for a state school place, thanks. The state school said it couldn’t meet my child’s needs. So my disabled child missed months of education because their state school wasn’t meeting their needs. This isn’t ‘whining’. It’s very serious.

Disabled children should not have to miss months or years of their education. Yet due to government underfunding, this is a very common experience among SEND families. It is a national scandal. It means kids lose out on school and their parents can’t work because their kids aren’t in school.

What is fair tax?

Private school parents pay their share, and often it’s a pretty big share on top and then they pay the school
fees.

What’s unfair about this?

Shaketherombooga · 09/09/2024 08:33

Pay VAT as required, and get rid of the ridiculous’charity’ status thatnallows thee multi millionaire businesses to avoid paying proper business rates.
That.
I pay my ‘share’ too - we all do. Not sure why private parents think it’s unfair somehow. Our tax money is used for public services that many don’t personal use a lot or use at all.
