To say I loved the opening ceremony?

I really enjoyed the show last night! It was bold and ambitious and all
Encompassing! It was a shame about the rain, but I think overall it was really great! But shocked how many utter miserable responses to it there have been!

I'm shocked that people are still complaining that there were trans people performing and a cheeky scene that insinuated a threesome! Love, passion and style are all big French themes! Can we get past the British stiff upper lip and just enjoy it for what it is?

Remember, we had David (not holier than thou) Beckham driving a boat up the Thames and loads of weird and quirky things at our opening ceremony, that would have gone over the heads of most of the rest of the world.

It went on a bit, but overall I enjoyed it.

I felt it was quite coherent. It told you what each section was about and started with the liberty, egality, fraternity and added a few themes. I quite liked that they had peoole that weren't French doing stuff too.
I dont know how many non western participants felt about it all.

Els1e · 27/07/2024 11:08

I liked it too. Apart from the speeches. I thought they did really well despite the rain.

LochKatrine · 27/07/2024 11:16

Willyoujustbequiet · 27/07/2024 10:54

You're not alone. I thought it was disgusting. What idiot thought that was appropriate is beyond me.

I agree, I thought that was distasteful.
The 2012 Olympic opening ceremony didn't include scenes of what happened under Bloody Mary!

HRTQueen · 27/07/2024 11:19

I thought it looked as though it was mostly put together by a group of performing art students with a large focus being on their interpretation of presenting France

it just didn’t mesh together some stunning parts seeing beautiful Paris and Celine singing but overall it was poor

Wendycoping · 27/07/2024 11:21

I loved the horse and Lady Gaga.

And Carl Lewis etc all shitting bricks on that boat 😆 poor them it looked awful

MummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 27/07/2024 11:22

I liked the horse on the river, the can can dancers seemed rather out of sync otherwise they'd have been good too. Lady Gaga wasn't bad and from what I saw of Celine Dion (didn't stay up to watch her) she was great.

Boats were a bit lacklustre, in fact most of the beginning was just....dull.

I wasn't much of a fan of everything being queered up to the eyeballs. The threesome looked tacky, for the city of romance you could have had a couple (of any sexuality) seeing the sights and falling in love. The catwalk could have showcased Paris fashion through the ages and the latest up and coming designers, instead of a showcase of drag queens death dropping all over the place.

They probably wanted a cheeky element of eurotrash which is fine, but overplayed it to the point where it was less part of the Olympics and more just shoving it down our throats for the sake of it.

Createausername1970 · 27/07/2024 11:23

I thought the concept was good, and I liked the bod with the torch who kept popping up from time to time.

But it dragged a bit in places. I found the dancing in the gold fountain was particularly tedious, it just went on and on.

The horse was good - but what was the point?

But hats off to them with the cauldron.

Consider me old fashioned, then, but I don't think children should be exposed to sexual material.

Wendycoping · 27/07/2024 11:24

God, I never gave a second thought about the drag queens and didn't even notice the threesome!

Mumsnet makes me feel like a very sexually liberated 60 year old! It's great 😆

Why would watching men make a mockery of women and Christians whilst they show threesomes to children make you feel ‘sexually liberated’? That’s a bizarre brag at best…

How do sex clowns make you feel sexually liberated? They aren't into 60 year old women.

Positivenancy · 27/07/2024 11:32

I know someone who was there under a working capacity and they said it was brilliant to be there and they enjoyed it! The seating area they were helping out in were €2400 per seat apparently!

BestIsWest · 27/07/2024 11:32

There were bits that didn’t work and bits that were too slow but on the whole it made me smile (along with the great threads here on Mumsnet) and Celine Dion was magnifique.

Aaron95 · 27/07/2024 11:34

Overall I liked it. Some bits were better than others but they tried to do something different and I applaud the French for that.

IsThisAWhaleOrArmadillo · 27/07/2024 11:40

I loved that it was staged in the centre of Paris as day turned to night.
Celine Dion gave a wonderful performance.
The silver horse was mesmerising and the balloon was stunning.
At 4 hours running time there are always going to be some standout moments and some wtf moments!

the80sweregreat · 27/07/2024 11:40

The lady who sung Imagine had a beautiful voice and nice to see Celine Dion who has been ill for many years. The balloon fire was a surprise and looked cool. Just a shame it took ages for the athletes to get to it , but it did show off Paris!

PuppyMonkey · 27/07/2024 11:41

I thought (apart from Queen Celine) it was terrible but I also thought ours back in 2012 was an utter cringe fest tbf.

DinaofCloud9 · 27/07/2024 11:41

British stiff upper lip? Erm OK.

How weird to think that's why people didn't like it.

My French mother thought it was shit. She must be uptight too I suppose.

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 27/07/2024 11:42

It was like it was designed to be the opening ceremony for Eurovision.

It was tacky and trashy. Overall I hated it, I'm just so done with queer theory drag nonsense.

There were some amazing highlights, like the mechanical horse (although that went on for faaaar too long) and the balloon and Celine dion.

On the whole it was tedious.

Just more accepting obviously than many on here - I know mumsnet has a real issue with trans people and drag, and can't put that to one side for a moment.

StevieFae · 27/07/2024 09:31

Paris looked beautiful, some fabulous buildings and bridges and the later, especially lit up as the sky darkened.

I think there is a British superior view of ourselves, that nobody is better than us.

In our 2012 OC, there were many cultural references , that we get, but the rest of the world didn't.

That is the same last night, the French get it, some of us didn't.

I admire them for taking risk and trying something different to the usual stadium event. Nothing ever changes if creative people don't try something new.

Well done the French.

I agree. I thought it was fabulous. Great balance of history and forward-thinking, some really wry moments, clever, creative and very, very French. Parfait 👌

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 27/07/2024 11:46

Why is it when people want to represent equality, it's always all about the drag queens?

It's so fucking boring.

CHEESEY13 · 27/07/2024 11:49

I hope it didn't start as it means to go on. So many umbrellas, waterproofs and Pac-a-Macs, thoroughly soaking wet athletes trying to keep their PR smiles from getting washed away.

But "Tommorrow is another day" as Scarlet O'Hara famously said.

SantaMariaMaggiore · 27/07/2024 11:49

I loved it too! It was an extraordinary feat to pull off, and for the first time in my life I felt an understanding of what it is to feel something about one’s national identity. I understand it in principle but not with any emotion. I absolutely love what they did and looking forward to rewatching the whole thing.

Now I’ll read the thread to find out what viewers could possibly find to object to!
